Regarding the expected flight speed readjustment

It's my understanding that Flight is currently using an incorrect value and is "too fast," and a correction is eventually expected in an upcoming patch which will leave the cap unchanged but lower your base speed a bit.

I don't really know much about the actual numbers. I'm also not really sure what they're planning to change, so I might be barking up the wrong tree here. But I do have an observation/request:

Currently at 50, one decent enhancement (SO or high IO) caps Flight speed.

I'm not against change per se. But, whatever they feel should be changed, I'm hoping that they don't change that. My rationale is that Super Jumping and Super Speed both cap their speed at 50 with one decent-sized enhancement; it seems weird, if not downright punitive, to let SS and SJ go full speed on one slot but require Flight to invest more slots.

I don't really mind if they change flight's cap, or the speed breakpoints when at lower levels move around somehow, and I don't mind Flight being slower than SJ and SS. But right now, the ability to cap fly speed at 50 with one IO (just like SJ and SS can do) feels fair. I'd be disappointed to see that change.

At 50 with a SO, a corrected Fly Speed will be just shy of the cap. A level 50 IO will put it over the cap. So...

Wish Granted!!

(Currently the buggily overbuffed Fly Speed hits the cap without any enhancements. This means Temp Fly Powers that take no enhancements are currently at the fly speed cap.)

Excellent. Now I regret not asking for a pony, too.

Now, if only they'd do something so you can cap teleport with one IO.

ahem....pardon the enthusiasm.
I certainly like the reduced slotting ... SO, you know they'll "fix" *that*...

The new fly speed is a huge boost to fun.

Why not leave it as is and simply raise the cap slightly so that a single SO benefits it?

Will any of this involve hover?

You mean how the bugged 50% increase means no extra slotting and the fixed, nerfed 33% increase means no extra slotting?
More like how the bugged, 50% increase is FUN and the fixed, 30% increase won't be as fun. :P

EDIT: even if we're okay with slow, going faster for free is always fun, after all.

With Fly and an IO, there is no difference between the two since they both hit the cap.

And while more is 'fun', that's a matter of opinion. For those who think about game balance, the constant call for more and more and more and more, if given into, will break the game and make it unfun for all but a few.

Castle has said in the past that the travel speeds we have are basically at, or near the caps that the servers can handle. If we let people get too much faster, servers will stop being able to keep track of them, and you'll get problems with server-based lag as error checking tries to find you.

Slower movement sure sounds like more fun to me!

But but... they just put the speed up with i18!?

I was taking a guess at the opinions about it. Personally, I am okay with slow fly speed.

Yet at the same time, it feels like they're taking away something, even if it is a bug.

It's not like a slower run speed is going to ruin the game for anyone, but the game is about having fun and I don't see how a change such as reducing its speed is that at all.

Any links about this?

OK, I was about to smugly post the relevant note in the Patch Notes from I18 which say that Fly speed base was buffed to 33%... but the Patch Notes say 50%!

That's different from when I18 was in Beta and the notes said a 33% buff and Castle acknowledged that the 50% buff was a bug.

So, I just shot off a PM to Castle about this to see what's what.

And I heard back from Castle... it will be going back to 33%, it's in the pipeline.

And please, before anyone gets started on this... a fix is not a nerf. The 33% buff was always the intended buff. It was a buff. Buff. Not a nerf.

BTW, for Blasters, the buff is indeed already just 33% and not 50%. Kooky, eh?

Eh, due to enhancement I will be at the fly cap on everyone I've been playing since I18 even after they fix this. But I do get the sense of at least mild sadness at "loosing" the accidental overage part the buff. I'd just remind folks that most of them probably won't notice once it's fixed back to where the devs meant it to be, at least if they have SO-level enhancement slotted. (If they normally fly around using temp powers, I guess they'll notice it. >.>)

Going from a 50% buff to a 33% buff means they'll be losing 17% of base speed, which is 2.43 mph.

If they already don't have Sprint [EDIT: I meant 'Swift'], they'll get it for free as an inherent and they can put a Fly IO in there and get a 19.4% buff of 2.78 mph.

Er, do you mean to say the fitness +Run/Fly auto-power, called Swift?

So....this change won't affect anyone of high enough level to enhance to the cap, and those of lower levels wouldn't be able to hit the cap anyway by virtue of not being able to access powerful enough enhancements.

I'm flying at 58.63 mph now, and after the change, I'll be flying at 58.63 mph.

I'm very confused as to why anyone would be upset about this.

Every loss of power, no matter how insignificant, no matter how justified, or even no matter how untrue, must be fought with every ounce of power in one's body because it is a NERF. And NERFS are evil. NERFs ruin the game. A NERF killed my father and had its way with my mother and sisters and foreclosed on the farm. A NERF can only be countered with a rage the burns hotter than a million suns.

So, does that explain it?

So how would a travel power that suppresses be unbalanced in any way (if every travel power got a buff)?

How can you bring balance into discussion of a noncombat power that's purely there to make more fun?

The plus there is that the main toon I have that uses it is a blaster, so, unaffected!

I wonder if that only applies to SS and TP, or if Fly's multidimensional movement is somehow less optimized.
