What is the best non-conventional solo'er?
Fortunata.
Control powers, solid damage, good defences, stealth if you just want to go past all the trash mobs to complete a mission quickly...
Crashless nuke, decent psi resists for those annoying psychic elite bosses, protection from enemy control powers, and also confuse for fun and enemies like Rikti Guardians. (if having half a dozen Accelerate Metabolisms on you is the sort of thing that you like)

It is my opinion that you have not tried anything until you get it at least level 22, where you slot SOs. In the case of warshades, 22 is certainly where the momentum really gets going.

Though I never really know whether a new toon is going to be worth the long haul until around level 30 when you have just about all the toys your going to need to go play in the sandbox

The one big surprise that I've seen is a Warshade. I never considered it even for a teaming AT since I've read/heard about how tough they are to level period. Sounds like I might have to give them a shot.
I'm really enjoying hearing everyone's opinion. However I have to disagree with people say that pretty much every AT in the game can solo well. There are some pure support primaries and secondaries that just don't lend themselves to playing solo. Empathy comes to mind, the best powers in that set are for others, not you.
I'd second Rad/Sonic Def, Fire/Rad Corr, and Fire/Dark Corr.
As a personal preference, nothing gets my blood pumping like soloing a blaster. It's a delicate ballet between guerrilla tactics and pure berserkerdom. A primary w/ some good secondary effects is nice for this, with Energy Blast being my preference (although AR, Ice Blast, and to an extent, Archery, are fun too).
Open the pod bay doors, Hal.
I've been soloing....
Bots/FF Mastermind. It kills while AFK. Great defences, sweeping through hallways with Force Bubble while the bots shoot everything up.
Fire/Kinetics....Corruptor. It's all about the speed.
Fire/Dev Blaster
SoA Crab. Pets +AoE+Defences. Works for me.
FF/energy Defender. Not very fast. Might be better at higher levels with better IO slotting.
I've been having a lot of fun with my Force Field/Psychic Defender. Not super fast, but quicker than the average Defender, I'd say.
I've also recently realized how awesome my Dark/Dark Defender is, even in the teens, but I see that is already a well-recognized build of awesomeness.
Personally, the only things that I really have trouble soloing are Corruptors. I don't know what it is... I just can't get the hang of them by themselves. On a team, I have lots of fun on them. I think that might be more of a peculiarity of my playstyle though.
But yeah... just about any AT is soloable, and even the slower ones work great if you build right. Hell, it was quite painful, but I've soloed an Elite Boss on my petless Mastermind. Anything seems easy after that.

Full, detailed character list
My Traps/AR defender was brilliant solo as well as being a great addition to any team.
Night widows and Huntsmen are also great.
Storm/anything Defender.
I remember my Storm/Archery defender being incredibly fun to solo from about lvl 8 on. I'm not soloing AVs in my mid 40,s but not once did this toon ever need to grab a teammate to complete content.
I've gone the MM and Corrupter route with /Storm, but when you solo you can't pretend entire blocks of levels don't exist like you do when you team - this means having to wait until you hit your 20s to get the powers that matter out of Storm, not to mention those 6 extra levels you need to suffer through without Thunderstorm...well, I can't say I like that.
Fire/Traps, /Dark, /Storm or /Rad Corruptor. With Fire you get awesome AoE damage to wipe out swarms of minions, good single-target damage for tough bosses, and with the debuffs in your secondary you kill fast and are nearly invincible if you're doing it right.
Ice or Sonic Blaster, or any Blaster if you've built up some defense with IOs. Or you could forego the defense, roll up a Fire/Elec or Fire/EM or even Fire/Fire, grab as much recharge as you can and just use the "best defense is reducing all your enemies to a pile of smoking cinders" strategy all the way to 50.

Non-melee ATs/combos I've soloed easily with:
Corruptor Ice/Dark (my current)
MM Bots/Dark
Controller Fire/Rad
To me, the thing to look for is self-support for powerset combo weaknesses (e.g. Power Sink for Corruptor Ice/Dark), and enough damage output so the battles aren't boringly long.
Current primary characters, all on Guardian:
The Amber Fist (Elec/Stone Tanker) | Pixelbeater (Fire/Kin Corr) | The Sequencer (Bots/Traps MM)
Blakkat (Claws/Dark Brute) | Mhogus'thra (Ill/Dark Cont) | Wyldhunt (Beast/Dark MM)
As a 90%+ soloist, I'll throw in another vote that pretty much any AT
can solo reasonably well (I've run a bunch of them).
In terms of "unconventional" - ie. AT's you may not expect to solo well, I'd
offer the Burn Aura/Ice Melee tank...
I'm not sure if it's "best", but mine runs the wall in Cimoera (sp) almost
effortlessly (even back when Burn still had it's fear component - Ice Patch
is a beautiful thing)
On top of that, he's darn near indestructible (as tested against Lusca,
Pylons and others). While he can't defeat those, they can't defeat him either.

I'll just add a 2nd (3rd? 4th?) to rad/sonic defenders. With the buffs & debuffs, very fun to play solo, and also very useful if you play the occasional team.
Any MM. Actually, I prefer to solo my MMs and don't like to team with them (when I am playing my MM, I mean). On teams, in big battles it's too difficult for me to keep track of my pets and what's going on with them and my team mates AND keep my pets out of doorways and such. Just easier solo with them.
Lots of trollers & doms solo easily, as well.

Sonic/Electric blapper was one of my unconventional yet successful level-ups. Once you get siren's song you can keep spawns slept while you beat things down 1 at a time. With Air Superiority to perma-knockdown your target you can move along with relative safety even though you have no defenses to speak of. Sonic/energy could probably do that even better by adding more stuns to the mix.
At the end game that toon was too squishy for my tastes, but leveling up was fun.
I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.
For me, the best solo ride to 50 was my Plant/Storm Controller. Seeds of Confusion, Roots, and Freezing Rain are an amazing amount of damage and control. At high levels Tornado, Lightning Storm, Fly Trap, and an epic AOE add significant amounts of damage and chaos.

Kinetics/Dark Defender. That is all. If I had a Mids build, I'd post it. But I've been winging it. I think I'm on respec 10, or something like that. Also, a second vote for FF/Energy Defenders. Just make sure you take TP Foe.
+1 for Crab Spider love. Pet based Ranged AoE +DEF monster of Doom.

Dominators. My personal favorite is a Mind/Psy, but there are a ton of different builds you can try.
... Second choice? Masterminds. ... As an aside, you can also try a stalker. ... |
I guess I like the MM's most because I find that just about any combination of them has just enough tools at any level to solo their missions on at least the easiest difficulty settings. As you level and the mobs you fight get harder, you get more tools in the form of more/better minions, buffs and enhanced minion abilities. Once you've got your highest level minion, you're golden and can rip through solo missions with ease. Other AT's tend to have rough spots when you're waiting on a defining power or two.
MM's also have several dimensions of play. You can be a damage dealer, you can tank for a team, you can play support and while you're not the best at it, practice at keeping 6 ADD-riddled henchmen alive makes some MM's pretty good at keeping a team alive, if they do their part. And you can take ranged attacks of your own to join in on the fun.
