No Ordinary Family?
Traffic in this part of the forum world has slowed down a bit lately. I also think everyone else is waiting on someone to start the thread.
That said, last night's episode was good, but why would the thieves be carrying around a ring from a robbery several weeks old?

I think they're slowly moving towards him wearing a mask. In the preview of next week's episode they showed him wearing a hoodie.
Overall I thought it was a decent episode though it was a bit painful watching JJ try to get the girl to like him by pretending to be Jewish.

I watched last nights episode with my wife who has no real interest in anything superhero related (her only real character flaw, but one I have learned to live with). Even she was wondering why the wife didn't just superspeed through the room taking all the guns away from the robbers in the first robbery. Apparently she is fast enough to have done so without risking anybodies safety or her identity, so it didn't make much sense why she didn't do so. Also, I really hate how they portray the daughters mind reading. It just looks like people mugging for the camera and it detracts from the story.
Other than that, it was ok. Not great, but I'll keep watching to see how things develop.
It's an interesting show, and I don't think it's going to find its pace for the entire first season.
Heroes had a grand, epic scope...but they never delivered on it. They had very few special effects and they wussed out on every fight scene.
NoF is the opposite -- they have great special effects and they use them all the time. But the scope is tiny. It's all about who's dating whom and how to protect their little family.
I think the storyline is going to force them to increase their scope to epic proportions. But it's going to take a while to get there. If they do that and keep up the excellent SFX, it's going to be a terrific show. Right now it's a ABC Family soap opera, and not that appealing to me. I watch it but it only grabs my attention when something heroic is happening.

My wife, who is just getting into superheroes, bless her, said that she finds the show unoriginal and a TV Rehash of Fantastic Four, especially since the guy playing the father is playing the same character as The Thing.
I agreed, kind of, but then I told her, I like the show because its like having the Fantastic Four on for an hour every week. Which is fine by me.
Yeah I had problems with, as mentioned, the robbers holding on to the ring from a robbery a week ago.
Also had a problem with, as mentioned, the mother not super speeding the guns out of the robbers hands.
I'm thinking Steph didn't take action because she doesn't think like a superhero. She thinks like a normal person who just happens to have superpowers, which she only just got. It was a dimly lit room with lots of tables and innocent bystanders to navigate around without tripping or running into anything. I think her choosing to do nothing was fairly reasonable under the circumstances.

Would have really liked a moment during the break in where she makes a wrong turn and has to keep running around the halls a few times till she makes it because she can't stop running.
Also had problem with a guy falling nine stories on to the hood of a cop car, and living. When the father first pulled the guys leg, I heard Syndrome in my head say, "Wow that's a little dark for you." but when the guy gave a goofy face after he landed I flashed back to the A-Team and groaned.

Great SFX; tiny and timid scope. I'm hoping this will change.

Alright...either CoX is losing subs or NOF is just not as good as people thought it was going to be?
Which is it? I've been expecting to read threads for this show but no one has posted any. With all the talk about how good it is I figured I could come here to read up on it. |
The show seems fine. But some of the joy of posting was squashed a while back.
I noticed that too. My first thought was that guy was dead, and I was waiting to see how the father (What's the character's name, anyway? Are they all that forgettable?) was going to deal with the guilt of killing someone. But they punted on that.

I wasn't too happy with the 'cars are stuntbags' scene myself, but that kind of thing does happen *all* the time in comics so I'll let it slide. Though really... how did Jim know the car was going to be right there? He didn't exactly aim, either.
Weight training: Because you'll never hear someone lament "If only I were weaker, I could have saved them."
I was like, holy crap! Did he just throw someone off a building? I'm glad he didn't kill the guy, but wow, he really doesn't know what he's doing does he, which is kinda cool.
It actually reminds me a little of the old TV show "My Secret Identity" as far as the scope of the show goes. Very small-scale, personal stuff about them just figuring out everything now that they have powers.

I rather enjoy the show. I was skeptical but so far so good. The ring being carried around by the thieves still was silly but harmless.

I kind of enjoy the fact that they're showing them screwing up epically as they're learning to use their powers. Too often in the superhero world, someone gets powers, and BAM! they just magically know how to use them perfectly. Thats one of the things I always enjoyed about GAH as well, that he didnt have the first clue what he was doing. Its a learning and a growing process.
Its always one of the things that always drives Batman crazy. He worked and trained and studied his butt off to make himself into what he was. Then you'd have all these guys who just got these incredible powers as a gift or a freak accident, and they would never really put the time or effort into mastering them. Always cracked me up when Bruce would get pissed and call them amateurs. That's what this situation kind of reminds me of. They need some serious realistic training with their powers. But, who is there to do it?

I thought it was a nice nod to GAH when Jim said something about losing the instruction manual.

By that, in the pilot when they are at the race track and she is testing her limits, her assistant starts rattling off questions. They ranged to things like her metobolism to wondering why her clothes didnt tear off her at her speeds. And theorized that when using her powers she was surounded by some type of field that protected her. I wonder if rather then have every solution be "mom speeds in and rounds up the bad buys before they can react" if they will put some limits on her like they did with the dads invulnerabilty and have the field around her repusle objects or something when speeding.
He needs to sit down with his wife and her sidekick to have a nice talk about Newton's laws.
Oh wait, the wife and sidekick are biologists, the one science that math is a requirement.
