Marvel vs. DC: Animated movies

I've been in a big superhero animated movie kick the past couple weeks and was wondering if there was any consensus on which side makes better straight to DVD animated movies. Also, if there's any others out there that I haven't listed, let me know so I can find them and watch them.

DC:

Wonder Woman
Green Lantern: First Flight
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
Superman: Doomsday
Justice League: New Frontier
Batman: Gotham Knight

DC seems to me to have a larger budget for their animated movies. They have recognizable voice actors, and they seem to have better special effects, and I've enjoyed all of them quite a bit so far.

Marvel:

Hulk vs.
Planet Hulk
Ultimate Avengers (1 and 2)

Unless I'm missing a big chunk of movies, Marvel seems to have a smaller library. And aside from Hulk, they seem to be avoiding a lot of their big names. And the ones I've seen, the marvel movies have focused more on fighting, while DC seems to have a bit more depth of story.

Here's the link for all Marvel animated films: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Animation

You're right, there are a good number less animated films for Marvel than DC... but on the other hand there are MANY more Marvel animated TV shows than DC... and don't even start in on the film comparisons.

Anyway, hope the link helps!

Oh, also for DC, there's Batman: Enter the Red Hood. It JUST arrived today from Netflix, so I know nothing about it... but I've heard good things.

You're actually missing quite a few, including what may be the best Batman movie, ever, Mask of the Phantasm.

((Though that one isn't 'straight to DVD', but should definitely be viewed!!))

If I was to rate my Top 3 out of the whole list...

#2: JL: Crisis on Two Earths
#3: Hulk vs Wolverine *
*But I could easily switch this out for Mask of the Phantasm or GL: First Flight depending on my mood.

Marvel doesn't have the film rights to some of their biggies...X-men, Spidey, Fantastic Four all belong to other studios currently. But i don't know if that includes animated movie rights.

Of the ones i've seen, i've got to give the nod to DC. Bruce Timm is generally involved and he's been handling those characters in that medium since the 90s.

I thought this was going to be an announcement about a Marvel vs DC Animated movie.

I am disappoint.

there's been decent stuff on both sides, though it seems like Marvel's pretty much stalled out in the direct to DVD market. 'cuase it seems like DC is churning out a new animated movie every two or three months. IIRC, i think Apocalypse was the latest one to come out and it was pretty good.

I thought the DC Animated movies are good, but thus far New Frontier's been one of my favorites. The only real gripe i have for any of them is that i wish they ran longer. Even if it was only another ten or fifteen minutes, some of them just feel a bit cut short.

Next Avengers was cute.

Never liked the Ultimate Universe but these were OK.

Iron Man and Doctor Strange were different but OK.

Haven't seen any of the Hulk ones.

The great thing about the DC ones is that they are mostly done by the same group behind the scenes who were involved with all the DC TV series. They have excellent stories and the voice direction is great. Voice cast and animation styles may be different but the same level of quality is there.

With Disney owning Marvel now, I expect you'll see a lot more Marvel animated movies out there. Having gone to Disneyland this past month, I saw a lot of Marvel clothes and toys in the Disney stores. My guess, there will be a lot more exposure of these characters over the next few years to help build the brand in the nations conscious.

eh, much as i liked New Frontier, i still think they did an okay job with First Flight. But suffers from the same issue as most of the other movies, too short.

I've never seen the Ultimate Avengers movies, or the Iron Man one. Doctor Strange was meh.

That aside, comparing quality, it's pretty much down to Hulk Vs. and Planet Hulk against 6-8 good to awesome animated movies from DC. So, DC by a landslide.

We have yet to see it, but Marvel needs Disney's animation muscle to catch up to the quality that DC has with the WB.

Tales of Judgment. Also here, instead of that other place.

good luck D.B.B.

Seems like sorta a karma thing.

Marvel's kicking DC's butt in live-action movies, while DC is ahead in animated ones. Hopefully with Disney behind Marvel and the upcoming Green Lantern movie; things will even out a little more.

I haven't really watched any of the DC films, but this is my opinion of the Marvel ones.

Ultimate Avengers - Good, very fun. Perfect combination of Avengers and the Ultimates.
Ultimate Avengers 2 - Good, but not as good as the first.
Iron Man - I think this would have been better if it wasn't an origin story, considering live action Iron Man had come out, watching a different version of his origin again was a little dull.
Doctor Strange - Was okay. Not a huge Strange fan, but it was interesting.
Next Avengers - Haven't seen.
Hulk vs Wolverine - Quite good, but not enough Hulk in it and certainly not enough Hulk vs Wolverine. But it had Deadpool being Deadpool so it gets points for that.
Hulk vs Thor - Brilliant, has some of the best Hulk fight scenes ever and has a pretty cool plot, cast of characters and location.
Planet Hulk - Good. Not as good as it could have been, but still good.
