Bid creep, people!
I'd guess laziness, what with it being a nice round number.
Or some guy was trying to bid three for 100k and added an extra zero without double-checking.
A while back I listed some level 25 accuracy generics for what turned out to be far too high a price -- asking 650k. They haven't sold. It's been at least a week or so.
But... In the last five sales, there were THREE for a million. Meaning that, at a time when at least some accuracy IOs were for sale for LESS THAN 650k, people were bidding 1 million. WHY? |
Three simple words.
Buy It NAO!
on the topic of bid creeping, the other day I went through a couple of Mako's Bite recipes dropping ~50k bids. I ended up buying 5 recipes which I re-listed at a modest profit- this morning they'd all sold for more than a million.
As more players figure out how easy it is to make inf fewer people bother sweating small expenses.

My City Was Gone
Today I spent 100k a pop on all the common and uncommon salvage I needed to craft the enhancements I had purchased for my Scrapper. Why? No real reason.
I've just started marketeering seriously (first read some guides on this section of the forum less than a week ago and have made close to a billion since then) and I still haven't quite wrapped my head around how the things I list for 11-12 million sell for 20 million 90% of the time. Yeah, I'd heard "bid low, have patience" plenty of times before, but it never sunk in how much people who buy things nao get soaked for until I became the one doing the soaking.
Buy low, sell not so high.
Ooh, a sarcasm detector. Oh, that's a *real* useful invention. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...t-sarcasm.html

That sounds either kinky or wrong, or possibly both.

American Steele: 50 BS/Inv
Nightfall: 50 DDD
Sable Slayer: 50 DM/Rgn
Fortune's Shadow: 50 Dark/Psi
WinterStrike: 47 Ice/Dev
Quantum Well: 43 Inv/EM
Twilit Destiny: 43 MA/DA
Red
Shadowslip: 50 DDC
Final Rest: 50 MA/Rgn
Abyssal Frost: 50 Ice/Dark
Golden Ember: 50 SM/FA
The last time I bid creeped, I paid 100 million for a 10-12 million Inf recipe.
More bids = more chances to add an extra zero.
@Roderick
This is why the corollary to "bid low, have patience" is "type fast, click slow."
In a world where you can sell as many level 15 recharge IOs for 100k (priced to move at 25k, cost to make 7k or so) as you bother to list I'm ready to declare bid creeping a lost art. =P

Some people are just generous tippers.

Crafters: Our Time=Your Money.
Yarn Salvage (common): bidding on stacks of 10 at 50 Inf each.
Wool Sweater Recipe (memorized): 2500 Inf.
Wool Sweaters: Selling at 50K Inf., while "Buy it NAO" buyers buy at 1 Million each.
"Fleecing" the impatient: Priceless.

When you're dealing with common IOs remember alot of the people selling them just made them to get a badge. Since there is also a badge for selling 50 IOs they're just happy anyone has a bid out at all and they don't have to delete them or hand them to nearby lowbies.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
What's a minute of your time worth? Mine's up to approx 1M. Figure 30min to run a set of 5 Tips, little over 120min to get a LotG or whatever will fetch the most, so that's more or less 1M/min. How much time are you then wasting to save a few K for a <1M recipe/salvage/whatever?
I'll bid & walk away (I know, I know, how much is a slot worth?), but bid creeping for anything <1M (really, <10M) is a waste of time, which directly translates to a waste of Inf.
An Offensive Guide to Ice Melee
"Let's try 50k. Someone might have listed 'em for real cheap."
...
"No? Ok then, we'll go with 110k."
...
"Hrm, still no. Well, nobody should be listing these over 500k, so I'll just try 515k. I just want to slot this character and get back to playing."
...
"You're kidding me. Hell with it. 1M each, I'm done here."
Where to now?

Yeah, I tend to bid creep like that. For salvage it goes something like 11K, 22K, 55K, 105K but if the last 5 are in the 10-50K range I might skip the first one.
At a [hypothetical]million a minute saving 50K is worth 3 seconds. I don't personally make a million a minute but I can see where some people would .
