Looking for Music Suggestions

Sometimes, when none of my SG is online and I don't have to worry about hearing anyone of TS/Vent, I like to put on some music to keep things fresh. There was a time I was listening to a lot of rock (mostly 90s era stuff, STP, NIN, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, etc.), but then it moved to more of an electronic/tech/rock sound (Daft Punk, Justice, Prodigy, etc.) Now, it's kind of moved forward from there into a wider range of the same.

I'm not sure of the best way to describe the bands I've been enjoying lately. The best I can do is to say they make a lot of use of synthesizers, vocal harmonies, electronica, atmospheric moods and other similar musical aspects. I've enjoyed a lot from these bands: Cut/Copy, Empire of the Sun, The Radio Dept., MGMT (mostly the Congratulations album), Kaskade, Chromeo, Junior Boys, Flaming Lips (especially the Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin albums), M83, Vincent and Mr. Green, Goldfrapp, Passion Pit, Phoenix, Zero 7, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and a few other bands similar in sound to them. To a lesser degree, Gnarles Barkley, Danger Mouse, Gorillaz, and the like.

As you can see, most of those aren't commercial play groups, which is why I'm coming here. So if you like any of those bands and have some suggestions for what you think might fit those tastes, let me know! I know it's a little eclectic in some spots, but I'm willing to listen to anything that might fall somewhere in the middle.

But please don't bother telling me my music choices suck. I get that enough from anyone who ends up riding in my car!

Half those bands listed I found on Pandora (which I can't imagine going without now). And with Ping being available, I'm hoping to find some more music there as well. But I thought I'd try here since, for the most part, I consider this a like minded community to myself.

Some stuff I like and you'd do well to like as well:

Sigur Ros, Album Leaf, Balmorhea, Explosions in the Sky, Modest Mouse, Bon Iver, Volcano Choir, Cee-Lo (half of Gnarls Barkley), Beck, She & Him, Broken Social Scene, Eminem (have you heard of him? ), My Sick Uncle (dunno if you can find this - It's a guy who mashed together the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack with some Little Wayne songs; it is superb), Sufjan Stevens, The Avett Brothers, Alexi Murdoch, Athlete, Ben Folds, Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, Flight of the Conchords, Jenny lewis/Rilo Kiley, Jimmy Eat World (older stuff - Clarity in particular), Josh Ritter, Karen O (the Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack is phenomenol), Jonsi (Sigur Ros singer solo), Kirby Krackle (songs about video games, comics and nerdity in general), Olafur Arnalds, Pete Yorn (his duet CD with Scarlett Johansson is quite enjoyable), Regina Spektor, Radiohead, Ugly Casanova, Vampire Weekend (really just Contra), and finally Wilco.

Enjoy forever!

Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.

As far as electronic music, I can't recommend Fluke highly enough.

Also The Avalanches.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Take out the Eminem and some great suggestions in here. Especially Sigur Ros, Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, DCFC and the Postal Service, Vampire Weekend and the much under appreciated Wilco. If you like Wilco check out Uncle Tupelo, Tweedy's original band from the late 80s early 90s.

First of all, you have very good music taste and there is nothing better to be yourself in music taste and in everything. 90% Percent of the music i listen to is non-commercial and for me is more interesting to listen to songs which have real art and realistic lyrics.

Since you like electronic, i can recommend you the following bands/groups:

The Cruxshadows
Covenant
Ladytron
Die Form
Cosmiccity
Robots in Disguise
VNV Nation
Ayria
Apoptygma Berzerk
Zombie Girl

This groups here consist from Electronic body music, Industrial, Future Pop, Intelligence dance music and you will note the eclectic touch in Die Form, Vnv Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk and Ayria.

I listen to most Neo Classical, Darkwave, Dark Cabaret, Ambient, Avant-Garde, New Age but maybe it is not your taste and i never have liked to base recommendations in what i like, instead in what the person likes.

Good luck in your search and their is a lot of good music out there. We must always make good and long searches to find it.

Hhmmm.... not sure if I can recommend anything in your preferred category of music... I can recommend some of my personal favorites, though.

Collective Soul

Primus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOIa_EfOx0A

Clutch
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9kziQFhWzQ

Mastadon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnjoXKmO16I&ob

Coheed and Cambria
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGpbd6BUO0I

These aren't exactly the most obscure groups, I know... Thought I'd throw them out there anyway, just in case.

Here's a few suggestions:

The Knife - dark electro pop. I'd highly recommend the album Silent Shout.

Do Make Say Think - post rock instrumental. Their self titled album is just fantastic.

Mogwai - on the same note as DMST, except more eclectic. Tons of great albums, which are all different.

Slightly riskier:

Screaming Females - alt metal/punk/rock-ish. The lead singer will blow your mind on guitar live.

Selfish C*** - really good punk. NSFW.

Let me know what you think!

If you're looking for something hiphoppy, I cannot stress Gorillaz enough.

If you want someone that does a LOT of sampling (but well!) I would go with DJ Shadow.

If you want some really cool, ambeint, eclectic, and/or operatic music, but the Starcraft 2 soundtrack. That music is straight-up incredible.

And if you're into something more progressive and metallic than all of the above, check out Ayreon. Great prog metal band, and usually leans a bit more into the prog than the metal. Uses a lot of sythesizers, keyboards, and ambient noises.

And those are my suggestions.

Genre be damned, JAM Project is the best band ever, period.

Not liking them is an objectively incorrect viewpoint, in theory (because there is no evidence of the existence of people that dislike JAM Project).

I tend to only listen to a handful of artists at a time while playing. My most recent phase has been:

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
The Vaselines
The Bronx
Every Time I Die
Death From Above 1979
The Pixies

In general:

Since you're into grunge, I listen to a lot of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Mad Season, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, Foo Fighters, and so on.

You didn't really list any punk-esque music but judging by your varied tastes, you may be receptive. I listen to quite a bit of The Bouncing Souls, The Vandals, Bigwig, Choking Victim, Leftover Crack, Star F*cking Hipsters, Cursive, Propagandhi, Against Me!, Descendents, etc

Thank you, Champion.

Powerlifter. Great band, and their stuff is free, 100% legally. Buffalo is their "single", so to speak, but Obsolete's becoming one of my favorite songs very quickly.
