Box Collecting

Viv usually starts these threads, and we might have pseudo-covered this topic before, but my aim is different than what I think has been discussed.

I wonder how many of us actually bought this game in a retail store.. Where did you first hear about it? Did you see it on a shelf and decide to try it? Did you buy the expansions the same way?

My oldest brother showed me the game back in Fall of 05, I don't know how he first came across it. I was too busy with my last year of high school, work, and my girls for an mmo (especially with only dialup at home) so I initially shared an account with Elegost, which we only played when we visited him at his apartment. Ele had more free time than me in those days, so he wound up having more stake in that account. Once I graduated High school and went off to College, I ended up with a whole new computer, lots of free time, and most importantly, HIGH SPEED INTERNET!

Long story short, I got my own account then (his has 9 vet badges over me even though we technically have identical playtime, which weren't introduced to the game till later... grrr), from a box of BRAND NEW CITY OF VILLIANS (this was just after i6 or i7 iirc) which I bought at some retail store soon after. However, in those days, this alone wouldn't get you access to both sides, and I didn't have much interest in CoV at the time, so I used the included 15-day City of Heroes trial immediately and started rolling my first toons. After quite a bit of scrambling, I eventually found an old copy of CoH at a re-retail games shop.

Browsing at a Discount retailer some time later (are we allowed to even mention retail names under the new rules?) I happened across TWO copies of CoH DVD edition marked down to 10$! Obviously the store didn't know what they really had, so I quickly snagged both copies.
Similar story with Architect edition a few months back.
I am not the collecting sort of nerd but I really do want a copy of CoV DVD edition now to complete my collection.

also, even though I've had all these boxed sets, I've only ever gotten Statesman and Mako Heroclix While Mako is pretty cool, I started playing while Emmert was still here (one of the reasons I've never been a huge Statesman fan). Has anyone else ever gotten anything else?

I have all the boxes except for GR, as well as all the HeroClix. I also have a Lord recluse Propaganda poster, a Lord Recluse shirt, a Statesman star shirt, and the first CoH comic signed by Statesman, Mako, and Manticore.

I haz teh swag.

And what do you mean, I always make threads like this? Hmph.

You make conversational type community threads? Wasn't intended in a negative way at all.

Wow, nice boxes.

I am a loser though. Buy game, take CD/code, chuck the rest.

I bough CoH on a whim, really liked the game and wanted the extras so I bought the Collectors edition one day at a small computer game store for like 5 bucks. About 3 months later I went and bought CoV because I really wanted access to super group bases. Then for some reason I bought CoV collectors as well .

I got the 'complete' GR box from Gamestop so I would have those totally awesome GR-O's. I don't think there was anything in that box except a map. I did get this kind of cool mouse pad though.

What exactly do you want from the CoV DVD edition Ryxx? I might be willing to send it to you.... MIGHT!

Just the box itself I have more than enough maps and outdated game manuals by now.

From December... Only maybe one game physically bought since then, everything else has been steam purchases.

Oh I see a bunch of titles that make me nostalgic for old now crashed Hard drives and long lost CDs like the original Baldour's Gates

Hamster, I am a little scared by what I think is a puppet on that top shelf, and maybe some more gloves (looks like oven mits to me). And all those games... Player 2?

Looks closer to welding gloves to me. Or just insulated work gloves in general.

2 things:

A) Penny, what did I tell you about clicking on links from Shamster? You are just asking for trouble/disturbing thoughts. Yet you keep doing it And yet, when you look at my pictures, all I get is "lol"

2) This thread is NOT what I was hoping for based on the title.

I've already forgotten about most of you

Maybe now is not a good time to say I thought the puppet was you at first...

That's an impressive collection, Ham.

You even have the Greatest RPG Ever Made... Planescape:Torment.

I heard Temple of Elemental Evil and Ruins of Myth Dranor were poop, though. Did they ever patch those games into shape?

There was a VERY good fan patch for Temple of Elemental Evil from a fan group called Circle of Eight. Played Ruins of Myth Dranor before most of the fan patches came out.

My biggest complaint about Ruins was the lack of being able to scroll out. They did a very good on the combat of the game, was straight turn based D&D with full ranges (none of this 20' ranged fireball crap you see in a lot of the games). So you could arrow or magic out hundreds of feet, but you COULDN'T scroll the map out during a fight, which made keeping track of who you were actually fighting difficult at times.

Kinda regret giving away / tossing a lot of my games at the end of college. At the time, most of them were worthless and didn't even have disc drives any more.

Problem for me with some of older PC games is that they don't work any more with newer versions of Windows and that other software they use (I'm a bit under the weather, so my memory is not recalling the software that syncs up all the different systems that games use). Can't play Heroes of Might and Magic any more (the classic oldies), and my CDs of the X-Com series don't work anymore. Found a separate free DL of the first game that works, and I figure that's okay since I have the CD: it just won't work anymore.

Not sure if my Myth II CD will work anymore... but that was a great game that I still have. Wish the first KOTOR would play nice with newer systems as well. *sighs* That's the main bad thing with PC games, I have found. With the Wii and PS2 we own, I can play a lot of classic old games and new ones. Good stuff, there.

Ryxx, I don't like buying games digitally, as I have way too many annoying issues with having to sync up digital copies of files (iTunes, games, etc.) when a computer or a hard drive bites the dust or I get a new one. So I have the CoH box from when it first came out. I used to check out Gamespy a lot back when it was a good site and had some good forums, and one of their best reviewers/writers was talking about CoH via previews and then reviews. Sounded perfect for me, so I gave it a try.

Grabbed the CoV box once it got cheaper and basically got the game for free when you counted the free month with it. Grabbed the Architect edition with some Christmas money this year so I had a newer disc to install with, and also for the Cyborg pack that came with it... lot of free stuff with that one. Then I just got the GR pack at the place that I cannot mention for the price that I also cannot mention.

I often throw away boxes, but I think I've held on to my CoX ones for some reason.

GP, suggest checking out steam releases for older games. A lot of them have been put out the last year or two. You can get the entire X-Com pack for 15 bucks currently, KOTOR for 10.

Do you have the official CoV cape?

Posted

Yeah, I have that too. One out of the bag that kiddo plays with, and one in a bag in the closet.

CoH DvD...CoV preorder...CoV CD....CoV DvDx2 one is still unopened.

Thats is for the boxes...everything else was e-store. and now I want the Complete Edition GR for the new costume pieces...

Well, I have multiple boxes of City of Villains DVD lying about the house. At one time they were on sale for $9, which was cheaper than a time card, which I why I got them. And the City of hero CCG. Unfortunatly these were the 6 instead of 7 figure boxes. So you won't get the full set of click heroes, if you want it. Where should I send it? (and be patient, I only make it to the pot office on fridays if I go)

At this point, I think my fiance has thrown out my old heroclix with my other junk, so I'm not worried about it, I'm not old enough to start collecting things anyways. Maybe I'll ask in a couple years from now

I did find another box, however; I apparently also bought a Good vs Evil edition box at some point, I don't even know if I ever used the game time card in it. Would upload a newer complete photo but I am just too lazy.

I should remind my wife that I want the hero version of the City of Heroes t-shirts for Christmas. That and an XKCD hoodie. Hehe.

You had a game time card you didn't use? Do you have too much money, or something? This reminds me of a friend of mine from high school that would regularly find $20 in his jacket pocket that he had forgotten he even had. I've never had enough cash around to be able to forget about it like that.
