Upcoming Booster Speculation
So, from the launch day interview we have:
And from the Razer Q&A: So we have at least two boosters being announced before the end of August, and it seems that they are not 'Super' boosters. So, any ideas on what they might be? We did had two rather cool dance emotes in the GR beta, but they were removed (presumably for a future Booster), so they could be part of it. |
What's the difference between a booster and a super-booster?
|
I'm guessing it might mean no-powers vs. powers. You have to remember that those who get booster powers have a slight edge over those who don't. Like [Ninja-run] being the ultimate non-super-travel power, [Mystic Fortune] being the ultimate random minor ally buff and then [Secondary Mutation] being the self-buff equivalent.
At some point you're going to run into a situation where you have more booster powers at level one than starting powers, or that the developers will run out of good ideas to use for booster powers and then what?
As for what boosters they'll put out, I'm hoping they'll push for some of the most lacking areas in costume design. For me it's Aliens, Anthro-Animals and Medieval-Fantasy stuff.
I'm still hoping [Self Destruct] gets a small base accuracy boost, though that seems painfully unlikely.

To be honest, we have so many temporary/booster/veteren powers these days I would prefer more costume parts then yet another power thingie.
Just guessing, but maybe it'd be a booster based on something Praetorian-related? If it were closer to Halloween I'd guess something spookier, but what with the release of GR this might be a little something extra to make the release even sweeter.
There's a real possibility that some of these boosters might be related to the thing Noble Savage said about getting players some of costume pieces NPCs have, minus signature costume pieces like that of the Freedom Phalanx.
I'm hoping for Trolls, Tsoo, Lost, Rikti and Paragon-PD

I hope the Alpha and Omega set isn't the only set announced for August. It's nice, but I'd like to see more!

I don't care when it is, I just want to know WHAT it is. Aug is almost over.

The Alpha and Omega auras were definitely worth getting, because like the Mac-pack's Valkyrie cape, they're accessible for new characters at level one, complete with combat-only versions. But I'm not sure that the Complete edition extras were part of that announcement, boosters are usually standalones and knowledge of the Alpha and Omega costumes was out for a while before it's release.
I guess we'll just have to wait a week and find out!

Just waiting for City of Heroes - Party Pack
A friend on another board hit the nail on the head. If you play a console online service (like x-box live) you pay monthly for that service. If you want DLC from that service you have to pay for that too.
This is just DLC, it is all stuff we "want" not stuff we "Need" to have.
I don't mind the Boosters, as long as new costume items are still placed in the game for free. I think David's project of making NPC costume items for players should be free. Those art resources are already in the game.
I think paid boosters should be reserved for new resource development. Personally I don't mine throwing a little extra money at Paragon studios. That extra money can add new people, and at the least pay for a little extra over time.
The 15$ a month dosen't cover as much as we think it does. There is a reason so many games have gone to micro transactions. Even the mighty WoW has them now. That reason is that costs just aren't being covered. Game Devs don't make the mad cash some think they do, combine that with the cost of living in GA, and I bet it sucks.
Now, back on topic...
I would like more monstrous parts, and a height slider increase. I want my Brute to be as tall as a Lost Aberrant.

Didn't they mention something about getting NPC parts to players for costumes? If so, I could see how they'd knock off a coupl eof buck and downgrade it just to asuage the 'you're having us pay for something already in-game!" crowd.
An NPC Booster would be nice. Other 'Thematic' booster possibilities:
Military: Many had hoped for, and vocalized, their desire for the 'natural' (ninja) to be more military/mecenary-ish, as that's the usual bent of many natural characters.
Monster/Scary: many people had hoped for more monsters in the mutant pack: this one would be an obvious booster to release in time for Halloween.
Powersuit (See: Gundam inspired) There was a hint at costume bits in this direction by Noble Savage. I could see it as an extra pack.
Winter pack: I don't think it would be released immediately, but I could see this being announced for around the next biggish themed holiday, Christmas.
Other, that I hope never sees the light of day but may very well happen:
"Furry" pack. This was a big expectation for the mutant pack as well. I'm not sure how it directly relates to a superhero game, put people want their catgirls, bunny chicks, and fox-boys.
My speculation based more on what is likely as opposed to what I particularly want in the short term:
In the All Things Art: Super Boosters, Noble Savage responds to several ideas that take shape. In particular, he responds to a "supernatural booster" that my best take puts it at ghost, zombies, skeleton parts. There were suggestions that this would be a great booster by Halloween if Paragon could swing that production schedule.
Also Noble Savage gave a nod to three other pack concepts: Steampunk, Sci-Fi (without full clarification of what era or aesthetic), and the long begged for Beast/Animal parts pack
Smart money would be on two packs from that list of four.
Weighing in on the discussion of super booster powers: I predict with defacto confirmation that the animation department is working on some degree of power animation diversification, we'll start seeing a few alternate power animations working their way into future packs. This may be in lieu of booster powers, which I agree they are running out of types of powers without getting redundant and are also beginning to risk overpowering those that buy everything vs. vanilla CoX users.
I hate to admit it, but I would buy new animations, I could even see picking and choosing from ATs I never use. I would buy Brute/Tank, and Scrapper/Stalker packs, and save money on the rest....ok that is a total lie, I would buy those too.

Could it be that these aren't super booster's because they won't be tied to origins like the previous boosters?
Brawling Cactus from a distant planet.
Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
I'm sure one of them will probably include the pop dance seen during GR beta.

So, from the launch day interview we have:
What is next for City of Heroes in the coming months?
Melissa Bianco:
We’ve created a beautiful world that is Praetoria and I want to support that. We’ve also promised more content, so it’s been a personal goal of mine to keep that momentum flowing, we’re simultaneously working on short-term and long-term Issues so that we can continue to support features we introduce. We have Boosters and Super Boosters coming out and, of course, Matt Miller’s baby – End Game. So just because this Expansion is out the door, we haven’t slowed down, we’re still as busy as ever.
I've really enjoyed the Super Booster packs you have been releasing, especially the Magic and Mutant boosters. What other types of Booster Packs are you working on?
War Witch:
Dude...are these all mine? LOL So...Funny you should ask that, we'll be announcing some new Boosters by the end of August, so stay tuned. As for the next Super Booster, we're in the works on that now and you've been asking for it. As for what we'll do in the future, well, we have lots of thoughts from you guys, but now that we're done with Origins, we can do anything we want. So start thinking about what YOU want.
So, any ideas on what they might be?
