Universal Blows Their Wad On The 'Battleship' Budget
They're making a Battleship movie, really. That has to have an even flimsier pretext than the Space Invaders movie.
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
that hurt my brain so much. Now I dont know math.....

I actually don't think this is the worst idea ever. They are essentially making a movie about naval warfare. Battleship was a very simple game and that works in the favor of the people making the movie. There is so little for them to mess up and so much freedom to add their own story, plot, characters etc.
It's not like their taking a piece of history and making a movie about where they have to drastically change or mess with the facts to make it "compelling" or what ever. I'm looking at you Pearl Harbor. This is simple. Take the basic concept of ships trying to find each other and sink each other in a giant naval battle, and make that into a movie.
If they do it right they can have good action scenes, good tension, life and death choices, great visuals even fun characters. It's not the worst idea in the world.

That's generally my problem with it, though. Why even call it a Battleship movie? Just about any movie with boats fighting at some point could theoretically be The Battleship Movie. The source material is so nonexistent that trying to claim the two are related at all pretty much screams, "We're really just hoping you'll be nostalgic enough for Battleship to give us $10 for a movie ticket!"

total kick to the gut
This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.
Next headline:
"Will Universal say 'Sorry' about 'Battleship' movie and make 'Sorry' instead?"
"Ben is short for Frank."

If they are actually making a $200 million movie based IN ANY WAY on the Battleship boardgame then could the days of Idiocracy's "***: The Movie" really be that far away?

I'm picturing all the worlds navy (which really really means what, USA, China and Russia? ) going after an invading force of naval aliens!
If they stick to that, with good action, to me it's basically them using the game's name to help hype the movie, nothing more. And may just be a fun summer movie.

I am sure a character will say "They sunk out Battleship!" and the aliens angle makes it viable that the ships will be attacked from the air, in straight lasers, mimicking the red pegs one uses in the game.

Sounds like it'd be just as god-awful regardless.

Will these be aliens from Atlantis? Naval ships aren't going to be much of a match against space aliens who could just drop rocks on them, not to mention, being totally unreachable with conventional cannon fire. Even a single decent sized rock could cause mega-waves to swamp any and all ships in the region.
Teams are the number one killer of soloists.
It would be great if they did this as a starblazer's type movie.
Imagine the earth battered and beaten by invading aliens. the last resistors are a mix of military survivors and civilian volunteers. They encounter a hidden group of scientist and technicians working on deciphering an ancient technology or finishing the lastest secret breakthrough device. They make the breakthrough in the new powersource and earths last chance but lack the resources to build a ship. someone remembers the old mothballed WWII battle ships. They have been forgottne and ar still mostly intact. There is an insuring desperate bid to retrofit the breakthrough technology to the old battle ships and get them working in time to stop the final assault. All while avioding and fighting off the alien advnce guard
Then you get a final battle scene with the old battle ship rising up in their antigravity force field and pivioting the gun turrets to fire photon cannons to kick the crap out of some evil aliens. While crews struggled to keep the cobbled together parts working.
I think it could be a great movie.
Didn´t they also buy up the rights to make a Monopoly movie?
y'know, I think I'd go another route with this movie:
Two fleets scheduled to play a naval wargame. It isn't until after the battle starts that the protagonists discover the other side has live rounds, and communication to base is cut off...

"Battleship" is rounding out it's budget to be around $200 Million, not a good number for an iffy picture. Everyone knows that Universal isn't churning out hit after hit, so for them to go ahead with production on "Battleship" is strange for the studio. Obviously a lot of us would be hesitant to hear that Universal is still going through with "Battleship", which is why chairman Adam Fogelson speaks out about their decision.
"It's a big bet like many, many big bets from many studios," Universal chairman Adam Fogelson acknowledges. "We will be nowhere near the high point and nowhere near the low point of what people are spending."
"He has a very strong passion and affinity for this material," Fogelson said on Berg. "He is a fan of the history and the current state of the military. He knows that world really, really well, and he is inspirational when he is talking about it."
"Battleship" is set to begin principal photography within fifteen days. Is anyone interested in this board game turned film at all, or do you think Universal is setting themselves up for box office disaster?
