expendables for me friday night...no doubt!

Personally given that Scott Pilgrim is co-written and directed by the co-writer and director of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead I'm going to go give it a view. Also, seeing as I work at B&N I've been looking at the comics during my breaks and they're fairly entertaining to me which is another good sign.

Also, given that The Expendables just looks like pure awesome action I'm going to go give that one a view too.

Huzzah for actually having a weekend off for once.

Without a doubt, Scott Pilgrim.

In their defense, scott pilgrim does seem to be pitched far more for a younger audience, coh'ers tend to be older. thats why we remember when most of these guys were action film heroes in the expendables, and are excited.

It's a movie starring that guy I want to punch. I doubt there's anything about the movie you could tell me which would influence me more than that.

The references to River City Ransom and other NES games totally scream younger audience. Just sayin'.

You see, Statham, Li, and Austin were never action stars when I was younger. They are the new group. As for the others, they simply never impressed me with their glut of cliched movies. The action film did become a cliche. That is why so many here enjoyed Tropic Thunder. (Never watched it myself. I really do not like that kind of movie.) Stallone says Keaton killed the action star. No, bad acting killed the action star. Laughable performances killed the action star. Seagal, Van Damne, and Lundgren killed the action star with their awful movies.

Action movies were the attempt to make a super hero movie before we really had the technology to make good super hero movies. Now we have it. In addtion, like all action stars, they change over time. The 80's action was nothing like the stars Eastwood, Bronson, and Reynolds. And they were different from John Wayne. It simply changes over time.

The fact that Scott Pilgrim is a comic book movie, and makes references to the old NES side scrolling fighters, combined with the special effects, makes it a preferable movie aimed not only at the young comic reader, but also the older geeks. I am looking forward to seeing it in the theatre. I may not like the lead actor, but I like the idea behind the story.

Going to go see Inception for a second time. Because that's where I want to put my money, and also, because its the first movie in a LOOOONGGGG time that's made me want to see a movie twice.

Expendables and SP I can wait for Net FLIX

and those are the entirety of the movie, right? I can find sly in-jokes in chowder, that doesn't mean that it is targeted directly at 35 year olds. if you look at who the scott pilgrim comics are aimed at, it is usually younger than a bunch of actors who were primarily acive in the mid 80s. (yes statham is one of the exception, along with erry crews and the mma guys), but dolph lundgrin, sly, bruce willis? we know what era they made their names in.

Look, there's no doubt I am going to see The Expendables. It looks very cool.

But Scott Pilgrim has me very intrigued. It looks cool in a way that seems more likely to surprise me.

I'll see both.

On the bright side, he does get beaten up a lot.

Let's try:

It's based off of a hilarious 6-part graphic novel filled with video game and comic book references (try this one out) in which the titular character, Scott Pilgrim, the lovable loser, contends against ninjas, action movie stars and lesbian lovers in an effort to win the love and respect of his new girlfriend.

He has the help of his gay roommate Wallace Well, who anytime he is mentioned is referred to as "gay roommate Wallace Wells." He levels up in video game fashion and attains new abilities.

The movie is directed by Edgar Wright, director and writer of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, two movies that were never short on the action, if that is really all your worried about.

Mostly, the reason to watch Scott Pilgrim is because it's directed exactly at us. We're their audience. The humor hits me right in the sweet spot, and everyone that I have recommended the book to also loved it.

As for your Michael Cera concerns... He was great in Arrested Development. He has seemed similar in every role since, but he hasn't been given much flexibility. This movie will allow him to stretch his legs and show if he can do something out of his ordinary wheelhouse. The character Scott Pilgrim is an overactive, ADD-addled 23-year old (who, on his 24th birthday proclaims that he "will be the best 24-year old... Ever!"). Michael Cera is generally pretty much the opposite; hopefully he adapts and grows into the role.

Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.

That's pretty much been my #1 thought reading almost every post in this thread.

Expendables is my call for this weekend. I might see Pilgrim in the theater or not. I've not decided. I generally like superhero movies, and I like the director's previous work, but I think the style of cheese may not suit my palate.

Too many alts to list.

Some people like bland American, some people like brie, and some people like limburger.

Expendables.

Why? Because I still have testosterone in my system!

Who wants to see one scrawny dork get beat on for two hours when you could spend the same time watching 8-9 guys blow **** up, lay the smack down, and generally kill everything in sight?

And to all the "guys" going to see the scrawny dork first.

GET YOUR PAIR OF *AHEM* OUT OF THE PURSE!

Of the cast, there are only 3 people there that I would call actors. There are 2 people there that can't act at all that I have seen. 1 person I know nothing about, and 3 people that are action stars. Their films are fun with often no more substance than a twinkie.

Commenting on explosions and violence is the EXACT reason you people complain about Michael Bay. That is all his fiilms are. That's not manly, that's not good cinema. This movie is the twinkie.

I will be watching The Expendables because I AM A MAN!

You ladies and effeminate 20-something boys can go watch the crappy hipster nerd-pandering movie where everyone talks like they're in Juno. I, on the other hand, will be enjoying watching the biggest collection of badasses in 30 years kill hordes of nameless lackeys, blow things up, exchange highly quotable one-liners with each other, and generally celebrate the existence of the Y chromosome.

Positron: "There are no bugs [in City of Heroes], just varying degrees of features."

No. Explosions and hyperviolence have their place.

The problem with Mr. Bay is that he has no idea where the place is, and couldn't find it with a map and a guide who knows the way.

For instance:

Pearl Harbor was not about Explosions and Hyperviolence. In real life, yes, there were Explosions and Hyperviolence, but this was not what the event is about. However, Mr. Bay seems to belive so. There was no glory to be shot when the Arizona went down, yet Mr. Bay found exploitable glory shots.

Another weird Michael Bay moment:
Mini gun attached to asteroid rover in Arrmageddon. Why? Why did it have a minigun? Why? Oh it was a Bay movie.

That guy just sucks.
