The Unofficial CoX Music Thread!

Because I could not find a universal thread concerning people's tastes in music, and I don't think that it fits anywhere else, I have chosen to place this thread here, to discuss all things musical. Argue, discuss, review, and talk about concerts you've been to!

I'll start it off by saying that I've really been getting really into Anthrax as of late. I saw them during the big four concert in Sofia, Bulgaria, and have been liking them more an more ever since. Unlike the other three in the Big Four of metal, they have a sense of humor and never take themselves too seriously. That, and you can actually hear their bass, unlike SOME bands out there. *coughMETALLICAcough*

Also, I have started listening to quite a bit of Tourniquet. GREAT, very underappreciated band. Much more technically skilled than many metal bands out there, and unlike most bands in general, the drummer is the songwriter. Also, he's a classically trained musician in other instruments as well, giving him a good idea of how they should sound when someone else plays them. Check them out.

And lastly, while thinking about Anthrax, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer are coming to my city soon. Hooooooolay crap. Gotta go see that.

Discuss, or talk about your favorite music. Or talk about your most hated music. Whatever.

I like Slayer, SOAD, Metallica, Black Sabbath and things of the likes. I listen to just about anything but not too many pop songs or country songs I like.

i bounce around. a lot, my favorite groups at the current time are five iron frenzy, brave saint saturn, Tori amos, Emilie Autumn, Nightwish , Alestorm, Abney park, Leaves eyes, and Dr. Steel. I have been dabblin in euro-dance/techno lately, kind of have to sort through which groups have imaginitive sounds, and which simply sound like regular songs played at fast forward. I tend to prefer female lead singers, and faster paced music , also dabble in religious music, sturgeons law applies, but five iron and bss were some strong finds with consistently good cd's. also have been doing soem themed metal styled music lately, with alestorm being pirate themed, abney being steampunk/pirate themed, dr steel being mad scientist themed and leaves being viking themed. not much into rap, though i have seena few good groups who make meaningful lyrics and not just materialistic nonsense, so tend to listen to Jurassic five, some talib kwali and old tribe called quest. can take some pop, and really dont listen to much country, but dont actively dislike it, just need a more directed guide to get to the good stuff and avoiding the lesser stuff.

for ingame stuff, i tend to gravitate to faster metal, blind guardian, dragonforce, and alestorm tend to be the big ones, particularly for tf's with large groups.

Hmm, keeping ti relevant to CoX and looking for theme music?

I have been giving this some thought.

I think, personally, the CoH theme tune is Cartoon Heroes by Aqua. Or possibly Avenues and Alleyways

Breaking it down?

Blue Side, probably I Need A Hero or maybe The Greatest American Hero Theme

Red side? Not sure maybe Bad Guys or The Imperial march or Bad to the Bone

Going forward, from what I've gleaned, I guess

Vigilante: something like Live and let Die

Rogue? I guess, they are more into the money so maybe... Gimme Some Money?

Loyalist? probably some crazy mashup between Don't worry, Be Happy and Every Breath you take

Resistance? Something obvious like We're not goinna to take it or Another Brick in the Wall or maybe If you tolerate this your children will be next or maybe Close every door?

Otherwise, a crazy mix of anything, really. Mashups and weird stuff like Into Introspection, weird al, they might be giants, crazy songs about flying saucers, random German covers, songs with post modern lyrics, strangely upbeat emo kids theme songs, ending themes to japanese tv shows and stuff thats on the radio, too.

Always remember, we were Heroes.

For reasons I'm can't fully understand yet, I've been in love with the music of Medicant Downline for a while. A mixture of industrial rock and video game music that seems to go along with any CoH play session? Yes please!

There are some kinds of music I can live without: show tunes, Tin Pan Alley stuff, soft jazz, and pop-country do very little for me, and I don't even think I perceive gangsta rap as being music.

Judging from my CD collection and what's on my iPod, I would say my tastes in music have a number of fairly clear centers of gravity:

  • Classical, with a particular focus on baroque and medieval early music. Renaissance vocal material does not figure all that strongly, nor do the nineteenth century symphonic chestnuts. Twentieth century composers like Stravinsky, Bartok, and Orff are better represented than Mahler or Brahms.
  • Psychedelia from the 1965-1975 decade. Doors, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and many lesser known performers. Some progressive rock as well.
  • British folk rock: Pentangle, Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, Strawbs, etc.
  • Dark alternative from the punk/new wave/post punk years. Patti Smith, Television, Cult, Echo and the Bunnymen. Post-punk and classic goth: Fields of the Nephilim, Love and Rockets, Siouxsie, Cure, Joy Division. Most industrial leaves me cold, though, but I do like My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult; they have a sense of humor.
My favorite contemporary bands all seem to be continuing one or more of these categories: Espers, Dandy Warhols, Black Mountain, Wolfmother, Black Angels, The Warlocks, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Darker My Lovely, Six Organs of Admittance.

Have you listened to any KMFDM? They generally have one song per album making fun of themselves (I recommend Intro for the best example of this,) as well as lacing some running jokes through most of their discography.

As for me, somehow, the three genres of music I listen to most are industrial (mostly industrial metal,) dance, and ska. That accounts for probably half of my music, with the rest of it being a mix of everything under the sun. KMFDM, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Prodigy, Streetlight Manifesto, Devo, Electric Six, Fluke, Gogol Bordello, and Powerman 5000 are all pretty high on my list.

Or Slick Idiot, which is the better parts of 90s KMFDM with more insanity. None of their songs are serious and all are highly danceable.

What I found odd is that, while teaming, I tended to gravitate towards industrial music like a KMFDM or more coldwave industrial stuff like 16 Volt or Acumen Nation or Cyanotic. When I was soloing, I'd tend to go for stand up comedy CDs like Mitch Hedberg or George Carlin or Paul F Tompkins. I guess it's just a matter of how much focus or attention I had to give the game at the time vs. how much I could listen to the background music/jokes.

That too. What little of theirs that I've heard has convinced me that I really need to get my hands on their discography when I have time. Reminds me a lot of the Nihil - Adios period of KMFDM's stuff, which is my favorite.

Hate to derail the thread, but I love this story:

Years ago I saw Slick Idiot on their first tour with my friends. On the way out the door, I thought it'd be a goof if I got them to sign Pokemon cards. The drummer couldn't care less, he just signed away. The female singer thought it was a-dore-eblay that I'd even ask. En Esch, who I gave a Meowth to sign, looked at it and said "I need this one" and pocketed it. Guenter Schulz, their guitarist, couldn't have been more pissed that I dared to ask him to sign it.

Cut ahead a few years and Guenter is player guitar for the band Pig. I managed to book my band to be the opening act for them, and it was our first big gig at the venue. So during load-in we're hanging back talking to all the bands when I see Guenter sitting there tuning his guitar. I foolishly decide to go break the ice.

"Hey, remember me? I'm the idiot who asked you to sign a Pokemon card here a few years ago."

He gave me a look of "I'm going to punch you in the face," dropped his guitar on the stage, and walked out of the venue.

Luckily I saw them live in a small bar again last year, so I think our longstanding Pokemon-bred feud is over.

I can't for the life of me get into KMFDM. Which is weird. I'm not averse to electronica, avant-garde or whatever. Plus, you know, German. But KMFDM just never grabbed me.

My current personal tastes are far and wide-reaching, and I've gone over them so many times that I probably forget about half of the stuff I listen to each time. But as long as I forget different parts each time, the message gets out there.

My absolute favourite bands do however include (in no particular order) New Model Army, the Clash, Danzig-era Misfits, PLI, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Current 93, Death in June, Subway to Sally, Tanzwut, Wumpscut, the Merlons, Tristania, Lacrimosa, Kreator, Suicidal Tendencies... I'm all over the ******* place.

What I actually listen to while playing CoH actually starkly changes depending on the character I play however.

My Nazi super soldier turned mutant supremacist goes well with Death in June (especially Take Care and Control and Operation Hummingbird, but his playlist wouldn't be complete without All Pigs Must Die), Darkwood, der Blutharsch, Sonne Hagal, Forseti and of course Richard Wagner.

My overconfident macho junior God of Death on the other hand is all over Danzig, Suicidal Tendencies, Body Count, Motörhead... juxtaposed with some darker, more thoughtful stuff like Current 93, the Cooper Temple Clause or Okkervil River (though he insists they're called Overkill River...). He gets very bi-polar.

There's also my changeling who goes best with Glam Rock, but that's probably born out of the fact that he was inspired by the movie Velvet Goldmine. Don't ask me how I got a superhero out of a movie mostly concerning itself with sodomy and drug abuse.

Well, to make it rather simple:

What I won't listen to: country (it just doesn't appeal to me), and most mainstream music. (Mainly, any song released after 1998. There are exceptions, however)

What I do listen to: Pretty much everything else. Video game tracks, alternative and new age, instrumentals, and some songs from the rappers Nas and Common get top priority when being added to a PSP I dedicated to music.

For anyone into the techno or the KMFDM, have you tried listening to Dismantled's Breed to Death?

It's a weird mix of Pretty Hate Machine Nine Inch Nails and 80s R&B/Pop that is insanely catchy.

I also recommend all things innerpartysystem

Hahahaha. This actually made me laugh. Although I don't HATE Owl City, I certainly dislike them and can feel your pain here.

...HOLY CRAP

Thank you SO MUCH, Taser. Thank you for showing me this band. They are the PERFECT mix of electronics and guitars, a beautiful mash up of dance and technical prog. You sir (or madam, I'm not sure) are my hero. I have been looking for complicated, difficult electronica for a loooooong time.

First off, GREAT story. I laughed.

Second, that's not derailing the thread. It's talking about musicians, which is what this thread is for. Stories of all kinds are welcome, as long as they have some sort of tenuous connection to music in some way.

------------

Anyway, to continue where others seem to have gone...

My musical tastes don't reflect me at all. I am a very laid back, kind, and honestly very nice and helpful person. However, I listen to a whole lot of super aggressive metal. It takes a lot of people off guard. I seem more like a pop-rock or easy listening guy to a lot of people.

My favorite bands at the moment are...
Black Sabbath. Not really "aggressive" per se, but awesome. Dehumanizer is an underrated album, BTW.
Megadeth. Endgame is SO GOOD
Tourniquet (So very, very, very unknown. Needs more advertising.)
Alice Cooper! Everyone knows School's Out. Does anyone know anything ELSE by the master of monsters? If not, YOU SHOULD
Motörhead. Although famous, it seems like nobody under the age of 30 knows who they are. This is very unfortunate.
Clutch! A fairly new band with a great sound. Sort of occasionally Zeppelin-esque heavy blues metal. Deep voiced vox. Great sound, I highly suggest looking them up.

Honorable mentions to Metallica, Ozzy, Dio, Voivod, The Mars Volta, Alestorm, Anthrax, Ayreon, Danzig, Flotsam And Jetsam, Kamelot, Living Colour, Carlos Santana, Overkill, Primus, Queen, Queensrÿche, Pantera, Testament, and Wolfmother. And a slew of other random people that I like but do not actually own anything by.

As far as listening to music while ingame, I usually go with fast, energetic, and occasionally cheerful things. Although with my AR/Fire Blaster, I seem to listen to exclusively slow, calm songs. No idea why.Doesn't even fit the character.

And as an afterthought, I must add that in my hometown of Taylorsville, Kentucky, NO-ONE besides my brother, my best friend, and I like any of this music. I will roll down the windows to my car and play something fairly popular and commercially loved like The Who, and STILL get funny looks. I live in the land of country music. Sigh.

Speaking of country, at work today I was in the back just working and tuning everything out. My coworkers had the radio out front. I wasn't even paying attention.

Then, suddenly, the music caught my attention. A ska beat with lots of steel drums and horns was playing. I hear ska so little in this area that I smiled and kept working. Then something WEIRD happened.

The singer came in. It was a COUNTRY SINGER.

In a ska song.

I'll let you process that for a moment.

And it gets better. As this unholy mashup of ska and country continued, and I just sat slack-jawed, a GUITAR SOLO happened. A rather fast, heavy, distorted guitar solo. In a ska song. Sung by what sounded like a man from Alabama.

What was this bizarre freak of nature? I have no idea. I didn't catch either the name, or the band that made it. My only question is HOW did this find its way to the local pop/country/soft rock station? And what do you CALL this new genre of music? Skountry? Skountrock? Skantry? I honestly don't know.

Anyway... continue the conversations, everyone.

EDIT- Holy crud this was a long post. I probably killed the thread.

I've also been really digging the new Android Lust this week. They have always sounded like the female answer to Nine Inch Nails but they even go a little Manson on their new CD with some very atmospheric programming and some digital aggression.

I figure I'll add one more Pig show story now that my secret is out.

So we're booked for our first big gig at a real music venue opening up for one of my favorite bands of all time, Pig. Our bassist also bumrushed ANYONE to buy tickets, meaning we sold all the ones they gave us, giving us a pretty sweet spot on the band line up. The venue usually had two stages for each show, one for local bands in the back and one for touring acts on the mainstage. We actually got mainstage for this, right before the first touring opening act. Prime spot.

How did we almost mess this up? Let me count the ways.

1. Before we even exited our van, I almost hit Pig's female lead singer with said vehicle when I took my eyes off the road.

2. The aforementioned Pokemon card incident.

3. As we're unpacking I realized I forgot the minidisc player we use for our backed up drums. We were about 30 minutes away from my house and didn't have enough time to travel there and back (during rush hour) so I had to call a family member to rush it over to us.

4. Just as the minidisc player was dropped off by a caring family member, I realized I also forgot my keyboard stand. This is slightly important for someone who plays two keyboards onstage. Since the only person we could call to bring it to us had just left and was on the way back home, I was stuck. I actually went to the second stage area and looked at the other bands' equipment to see if anyone had a similar two-tier keyboard stand. I actually found the exact model I had. Then I had the awkward moment of asking the 45 year old guy who owns it if I could borrow it for the main stage while his band played first on the second. I still see this guy at any industrial show we play/go to and he always strikes up a conversation with us about this show.

With all the equipment together, we wait and actually put on a pretty decent show for being a newer band (this was back in 2006). As we played, we realized the first touring band, Digital Mindy, were to stage right rocking out to our set. They were really cool guys who helped us tear down and shared compliments of our respective keyboards. During their set they did a Gary Numan cover, asking the crowd who liked Numan. I was the only one who cheered, giving the lead singer a chance to point out that I might like Numan too much. Oh if he only knew.

The show was actually called a "Nine Inch Nails pre-show" because Nine Inch Nails and Bauhaus were playing at another venue across Hartford the next night. Every band that played got two tickets for the NIN show to "give to a member of the audience." We gave our tickets to... me! So I got to see Bauhaus live which was amazing and got to see NIN live for the first time which was even moreso. All for opening up for a band I would have paid money to see myself.

Another great story! And it's so cool to meet a member of an awesome new band whose CD I plan to buy.

Speaking of which, do we have any other musicians reading this, professional or otherwise? Personally, I play drums, both a full set and various hand drums. I play a full set by myself just practicing, and play a pair of congas for my church's band, which is really more like a jam band than a worship team. Lots of improv going on, and how we play a song and/or the song itself changes a lot while we play.

I also recently went to Nicaragua and was taught how to play Latin beats on hand drums... a skill I have promptly forgotten and have struggled to remember. Ah well. That's what Youtube is for.
