I'm knew to the game i started playing back when the game first came out but quit was just wonder what a good server and starter class would be?

Freedom has the biggest population and Virtue is the RP server. Blue side, scrappers are a good beginning class and red side, try a brute.

Welcome! Like StarGeek said Freedom and Virtue are the two most populated servers right now.

I'd recommend making and effort to team up with other people, since it'd be more fun that way and you can learn faster that way!

It all depends on which bonus item pack you want to get since the access to the game you get is otherwise the same.

Good vs Evil comes with two unique costumes (Justice and Sinister), the Pocket D VIP Pass (a teleport power that sends you to a room in Pocket D, a convenient transit point to several zones on each side, which contains a Tailor that only VIP members can access), and the Jump Pack (which gives you basically unlimited height jumping for 30 seconds, with a recharge of 3 minutes - very useful when you don't have a travel power that gives you vertical movement).

The Architect Edition gives you a choice of either the Cyborg booster pack (contains the costume, a few /emotes, combat aura costume parts, and the Self Destruct power that does massive damage to anything around you and doesn't give you XP debt when you die - a great last-ditch ability) or the [url="http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Super_Booster_II:_Magic"]Magic booster pack[/b] (contains the costume, costume change emotes, and the Mystic Fortune power to randomly buff people with).

All of the goodie packs from the various boxed editions (including the Mac Special Edition - you don't need a Mac to get it), of course, can be bought from the online store separately, which main edition you pick to start with really won't make too much difference. That said, I'd personally go for the Good versus Evil - the Justice costume is one of my favorites (and Sinister's pretty good, too, as long as you pick the right colors), and I couldn't live without the Jump Pack or Pocket D VIP Pass. Then again, that's the edition I started with, so I'm probably biased...

Welcome back, Freedom is a good choice to start as well as a Scrapper or Blaster. I'd go with the Good vs. Evil because the Pocket D teleport is really, really handy.

Enjoy the game, ask any other questions you may have.

Actually, this game has a ton of stuff that you can do together with other players.

First off, I would suggest finding an Super Group(SG) or a Villain Group(VG), depending on if you're playing on the good side or the bad side. SG's are good in that you're sure to have some veteran players in there to show you the ropes. They're also good in that you'll be able to have several people right at your fingertips to chat with or group with, so you wont have to find random people to team with.

As for group activities:

> Giant Monsters(GM's) can be found in several different zones. You'll find out that players will usually gather up several groups to take these down.

> Hamidon is one of the "epic" monsters in the game. This giant blob will take several groups to take down, 30+ people, and the process takes quite awhile as well. You also get a Hami-Origin Enhancement, which enhances more than one aspect of your powers, such *** Accuracy AND Damage from just one enhancement. These used to be the sh*t but they're not so awesome anymore since Invention Origin Enhancements came out.

> Task Forces (TF's) are pretty much a long series of missions that you team up with other people to do. Once you start a TF, you cannot do any other missions until that TF is finished. You can log off in a TF and still be on the team when you log back on; this is useful in that if a TF takes too long, the group can just log off and continue on at another time. You can always leave a TF though.

> Probably some other things I've forgotten...

> Being in an SG allows you to raid other people's Bases. I'm not sure if base raid is fixed yet or not...I remember them being disabled sometimes back. Base Raids were definitely fun, teamwork and camaraderie brings a lot to the game.

Anyhow, try to find a good SG/VG first is what I'd recommend for a new player.

Just a note, when a window pops up blindly inviting you to an SG, that's probably not one you want to join. Most of the "good" SGs don't blind invite and in fact more than a few make you fill out a website application first. Go to the forum dedicated to your server and ask for "local" recommendations on which to join.

Dec out.

That said, unlike some other games SGs are optional. (No that EQish nonsence of only a few truly good items per activity, making use of things like DKPs mandatory.)

You participated to the death of final boss, you get your reward, period. Although these days that reward is most often merits, which work like DKPs in some regards, SGs have nothing to do with them.

I'll also add that the game's upcoming 19th free major content update ("Issue 19" in the local nomenclature) is supposed to be adding a new end-game system for level 50 characters; this system may be raid-oriented. Issue 19 should either be coming toward the end of the year or early next year. We'll probably learn more about it once Going Rogue, the first paid expansion since City of Villains, launches on August 17th.

As far as finding people to team with: it's a lot harder when you're on the trial version, because every communication feature we have got abused by goldsellers on trial accounts.

However, if you decide to join the game, there are two or three avenues for finding good teams:

1) The N P C project (see here ) is a mentoring thing. I'm not involved in it but I've heard good things.

2) Global channels for your server- things like Victory Badges- are full of very experienced players. We don't generally bite newbs.

3) Sieving teams. Join a bunch of teams. Use /friend or /gfriend to keep a list of players that were good and you got along with. (/friend lets your character keep track of that character. /gfriend lets your account keep track of that account and lets them keep track of you. /gfriend is a lot more powerful , requires people to accept your invitation, and there is a limit to how big your global friend list. So people may not accept your global friend invitation; don't take it personally.

Eventually, from joining enough bad groups with one or two good players, you'll log on and there will be people playing from your friend list. See what they're doing and if they've got any room for you. Since they're good, their teams will probably have more good players... which you may be able to /friend.

Welcome to the City!! *Passes out soda and silly string*

Everything you know about other MMOs... forget. CoH is a whole other animal. Being on a Trial you are limited to getting only to level 14. That said some of the being content is a bit outdated however things do get quite fun and Mission arcs a joy to read and run.

The Hollows would be a good place to run missions it got a small revamp a few issues back. Story arcs start there starts at level 5.

When you go full game remember this....

DON'T RUSH TO 50!

Yeah having a level 50 is fun and all but the thrill of CoH is the stories you get involved in. Both Hero and Villains (thought not as much) can choose multiple paths to level 50. New content is added for free every so often (Give or take 3 free issues a year) Issue 18 shades of gray is the free content that goes hand in hand with Going Rogue. Issue 19 is said to be the New end game content.

Issue 17 added new missions for level 20+ so unlike other games we get things across the board. You can even turn off XP gain in order to stay in level range of a story line your following.

For anything you might want to look up Paragonwiki.com is your friend!

P.S. Ask any thing you like here on the Forums I think we can now call ourselves the Friendliest Game Forum on the net! Thought that just my view. We do have Trolls but even they are tame compare to some other Forums. We are Newbie Friendly!

Note Newbie is someone who amits they are new and accepts advice from vets.
Noobie is just a fool that thinks they know the game and won't listen to anyone's advice.

They're automatically there (well, you'll need to log out then back in, of course). There the various 'Justice' and 'Sinister' (w/ & w/out padding) items (not every possible slot will have an item from every set).

When you are in the Costume Creator, you will see two new "pre-made" costumes for Justice and Sinister. Plus, all the specific items are available under each category -- you'll find Justice boots and Sinister gloves, etc.

The Teleport power will show up in your Powers list, and you can drag that to one of your power bars. (When you set up your character, you can have three power bars by hitting your right ALT key three times. Then you can add more that you can reposition by clicking on the little "+" spot on the top of the power bars.)

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Also note that the Pocket D teleporter doesn't actually become active until, IIRC, Level 3.

And I think you made a good choice. The Architect Edition has some nice swag in it, but the Pocket D VIP Pass has given me FAR more utility and mobility (especially at low levels).

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Welcome to the game and the forums!

Since you're coming from WoW, try to look at this game, THIS way: it's not about BEING a superhero...it's about BECOMING a superhero. If you play the game with that in mind, I predict you'll enjoy yourself a whole lot more than if you rush to 50 and are like, Okay...now what?

As far as we know, the Incarnate system is only "free" for people who own Going Rogue.

End-game stuff

Task/Strike Forces

Statesman and Recluse Task Forces can be pretty daunting on pick-up groups and can get steamrolled in under 30 minutes by savvy players. Before joining one of these, find a group of regulars so you don't get discouraged. They do offer Hamidon Enhancements, some of which are still quite used while others are bunk (looking at you, Centriole Exposure...).

Heroside has the Shadow Shard task forces but they can be pretty long and tedious, but the view is great from the car.

The Rikti War Zone (look for a "V" on the map in Atlas Park, Peregrine Island, Founders' Falls, Cap au Diable, Grandville and St. Martial) has a gigantic flying saucer that a large group of people can raid for Vanguard Merits, which you can turn in for a temporary robot, costume pieces, extra salvage storage and so on...be sure to speak with Levantera at level 35 to unlock the Member of Vanguard badge so you can earn the Merits. Lady Grey also has a co-op 45-50 tf which is fun.

Speaking of that...doing Ashley McKnight (in Cap) or Montague Castanella (in Steel Canyon) arc will unlock Cimerora and the Imperious Task Force (ITF). If anything is run to death in this game, it's ITF as you can do it fairly quickly, it grants 26 Merits and it can drop purples.

There are also a lot of story arcs and they can get "tougher". The mobs tend to have a lot more status effects at higher levels, Malta are especially tough as they are built to take out supers with end drain, stuns, robots, their friends the Knives of Artemis use caltrops and big swords...fun people.

Hamidon Raids are basically you against a blob, 45+ raid so keep your ears open on your badge channels and server forums for when they take place. These grant...52 Merits (?) or a Hamidon Origin enhancement. Well-tuned groups can just breeze this.

Outside of that, there are tons of Story Arcs which can have interesting stories and you should get an Ouroboros portal once you reach 25 (ask for one to be dropped for you then hit the top of the spire in there for the badge and portal) where you can 'flash back' all the arcs in the game...

There's also PvP, but if you're going to get your feet wet here...join a 'friendly' under PvPEC guidance so you don't get rolled too badly.

As a meta-aspect, the Invention system lets you boost your character through permanent enhancements (the non-purple, non pvpIO ones scale to 3 levels...it's kinda convoluted so see the Market section for more info) and there is the costume creator, supergroups, the upcoming Cathedral of Pain...

The game is pretty much always about shooting stuff but at higher levels the mobs get more obnoxious and have more status effects/attacks to keep up with your progression.

The thing with this right now is you're probably reading over all these posts going "Daaaayuum. There's a lot of stuff to take in and it all sounds too overly complicated..." With this game, it's all about how YOU want to play it. If you want to be a casual player and never touch a Task Force or an IO in your entire stay in CoX, then that's your choice. You can do nothing but do some story arcs and solo your way through the levels, maybe with a couple of friends, and you'll see 50 after 3-4 months and be perfectly happy with it. A lot of the things some of these guys are talking about are the difficult pieces of the game. Task Forces can be daunting, especially on a team of people you don't know because they've usually done them all a million times and expect you to know what YOU'RE doing. Same thing with Rikti Mothership and Hamidon raids. The easiest thing to do is just simply enjoy your first 50. Level it up slowly and surely, experimenting with the powers, enjoying all of the time you have with the character, and probably just stay away from some of the harder aspects of the game. Once you've got a 50 under your belt, you'll feel like you know the game a little better, you'll probably have your 3 month vet reward badge, and THEN you can use that 50 to complete Task Forces and Trials and Raids and the difficult parts of the game with the groups of friends that you've built up over the life of the character. I believe it makes it a lot easier to meld with the game rather than emersing yourself in every little detail of the game at once.

Also, this game is INSANELY Alt-Friendly. Positron has said it himself before. You may go months without EVER having a level 50... *looks at 3 month veteran reward badge and over 40 characters rolled, the highest of which being 44* For people like me, that's the true fun of the game, getting into the character creator and coming up with something new and exciting to play. Don't get me wrong, I usually run ITFs and Manticore TFs all the time because they are some of the most fun TFs to do. However, I've still logged onto one character, only to switch to another within a few minutes because I didn't feel like playing that character at the time.

Like I said at the beginning of this wall of text, the game is what YOU make it. There's something for everyone. You can be Good, you can be Evil, you can design your own stories and then play them to your heart's content, you can farm, you can hit up the market and make billions of influence/infamy, you can team with 7 other people, you can solo, you just have to play the game to decide what YOU truly believe makes this game fun for YOU, and that's something very few other MMOs have EVER been able to offer, and that's why I plan on continuing to feed NCSoft my money.
