That means there will be 2-4 weeks of open beta and 4-6 more of closed beta.

LOL! I'm glad that the devs are taking their time and not just rushing to meet some July date.

Dont get me wrong I want them to take time and get it right. I have just never understood why you would give any kind of time frame if you dont think you can meet that deadline.

That is on August Eleventeenth, because no one expects it.

Because it is a boxed expansion so discs, goodies and the boxes need to be made and shipped to retailers with a planned release date. Also they must believe they will make the date.

To my knowledge, July was NEVER given as any sort of official release. At HeroCon, it was stated that the target release time would be during the 2nd quarter of this year. July came about due to player speculation and websites like Amazon assigning arbitrary release dates to some products.

I stand corrected, then.

In any event, August will give them more time to polish.

The answer is that at the time you set the deadline you think it realistic. Then all sorts of pitfalls and problems arise while you're working to that deadline that you didn't expect, so you have to revise. In short, people are fallible, they make very educated calculations about what they believe will happen in the future, but naturally none of us can know for sure. Unless you're holding out on us with your own O-Portal technology?

There's nothing wrong with a development team making plans and setting goals to shoot for. When you're talking corporate budget planning you have to set dates for your managers so they have to be reasonably serious about their expectations on meeting deadlines. The problem comes when customers/players just aren't willing to accept that sometimes (oftentimes?) plans slip.

People have to chill and learn to cut the Devs some slack. Software development on this scale is never going to be a 100% predictable science. Obviously we all want to play new games ASAP and it's not like they change release dates like this JUST to piss us off. But players whine so much about it regardless that it discourages Devs from being more open about things in general. I'd rather the Devs tell us their plans KNOWING that they can always change rather than having no clue at all.

Sales people do it ALL THE TIME..... At least at my company they do. Customers are genearly not a pacent lot. They want there stuff and want it NOW. Sales does what they can to placate them, but promiseing the moon. Then the scream at US, the people who get it done (production control in my case). When we ask them what the heck they were smoking to give the customer such an unrealistic date, they genearlly shot me back a blank stare and say they NEED it by that date and make it happen.

...

Needless to say, this causes friction from time to time.

But we'er aerospace, this is gaming. I'd imagian it wouldn't work the same way, but from my expearince, sales promoses stuff production can't deliver, and that's how this happens. You need to learn to ask the right people the right questions for the right answers. heh.
