Noob with Server Question

Call Me Awesome

Posted

Greetings all. Just started CoH this week, and I must say I am just blown away by this game. I've had an absolute blast so far: I had heard good things but really it's even better than I thought it'd be. I've only explored a tiny, tiny portion of Paragon City so far but am just so impressed with it so far.

Quick question: how do I know if the servers are up? I'm trying to log-on right now (9:40am EST) and it says the client can't access the server. Are the servers down for maintenance or anything right now? And how do I check that?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Ah, awesome. Thanks for the info! That explains why I couldn't connect, since the servers are down at the moment.

Welcome to the game and the forums ...

As for your question, I'm wondering about this abit myself ?, As in, isn't today Wednesday ? i thought the standard maintenence was scedualed for Thursdays not Wednesdays? Why did they shut down the servers for standard scedualed maintenence on an unstandard unscedualed Wednesday ?

Im fairly sure this is to push a number of bug fix's from test to live (respec bug), also there is that LGTF bug and the the one that prevents some mob from beeing mezed. any of them geting fixed would be awsome but that NPC Mez bug is the worst imo.

There is but one truth. Time is limited. ndnw its over

Just a quick tip if you play on the US servers from the EU like i do, bookmark the above server status link as the main site annoyingly redirects to the EU site all the time meaning you see the EU server status if you click the link on the main page.

And just FYI - here noob/n00b is negitive. You're a newb.

If you know the term noob, you aren't one. You are, however, a lowbie until you get to 20ish.

So, what's your archetype? For a new person, I'd suggest a blaster or scrapper. Neither has responsibility to the party and both dish the pain. If a blaster, you might want to target through melee to help them survive, maybe kill off stragglers who go after your team's buff/mezzers. Scrappers can just go berzerk and faceplant and no one will think anything of it. [but combine three into rez at all opportunities. There are even binds for it. ]

As for blowing more cash, since you seem to like the game, Ninja Pack has that squatting run that boosts you abotu 18 mph starting at level 4. Also some swank costumes.

I forget which addon has the Pocket-D tp...I think Good v Evil. Besides, that has the Sinister Boots. [Sinister boots ftw.]

Oh, and welcome.

Welcome to the game and the Forums. In the Forums, you have found one of the best places for good information on the game. The others are Paragon Wiki and Red Tomax's Guides, both of which can be accessed from this site. Make sure to download Mid's Hero & Villain Designer so you can work on designing your characters. The various builds you see in the forums use that program.

Also, go to the VidiotMaps Download site to download a patch for your in-game maps which will show the location of badges in the zones -- don't worry, this add-on is approved and Vidiotmaps has previously won recognition by the Developers.

Welcome.
This. Welcome Newby!! And never forget to ask questions, we will try to answer them if we can. On that note also: Don't try to ask Devs questions in these sections because they don't usually answer them. This is to ask us the players.

So... Welcome!

Wow...thanks for all the info. Actually, one of the reasons I decided to buy CoH was in perusing the forums here and seeing how good the community is. From my experience reading the forums and (admittedly limited) experience in-game, it seems to me that the CoH community is among the very best communities for MMOs.

To answer your question, Postagulous, I'm playing a scrapper at the moment. I've also fooled around a little bit with a controller, but it seems to me that controller is a bit more of a challenge, so I'll likely hold off on that toon until I'm a bit more competent. Scrapper is a blast, though. In fact, the depth of character creation and development options are one of the biggest reasons I so instantly liked CoH, so I know eventually I'll have to fool around with alts.

And I'll remember going forward, that I'm a lowbie, and newb is preferable to noob.

Oh, and what's the Ninja Pack? Is that like an upgrade you can buy or something?

Kinda sorta no not really. You do get a couple emotes, a universal travel power and some costume peices. That's like most of the other packs. They have specific powers/costumes/emotes with the pack.

Scrappers can be very fun, but just be carefull not to jump too far ahead of tanks. Blasters (some) will make some teams mad depending on the type. Nrg/Nrg makes some mad while others don't make a fuss as long as things are dying.

In my opinion a Scrapper is probably the best AT for a new player to get his feet wet with; it has enough durability to be forgiving of mistakes while having good damage output so you can kill things quickly. Scrappers also have a fairly simple place in team dynamics... your job is simply to walk up to the baddies and punch them in the face. Don't really worry so much about the finer points of the game as of yet; for now just explore and learn.

The Ninja Pack is one of the "super booster packs" you can buy through the NCSoft Store, all of them include relatively minor in-game items and costume pieces and usually a minor power. They're all $10 (well, $9.95).

The reason most people recommend the Ninja pack is strictly for the Ninja Run power... it's a mini-travel power that acts as a half strength Super Speed and Super Jump and is highly useful for characters who haven't yet reached 14 and selected a true travel power. In fact it's good enough that some people skip a travel power entirely and rely on Ninja Run.

Another item to consider would be the "Good vs Evil" goodie pack, it gives you a jump pack that's good for 30 seconds and recharges in 3 minutes... it's very handy to get over that obstacle in your way.

In any case welcome to the game and enjoy your stay. Many of us have been here for years so the game must do something right.

And Energy^2 can manage just fine by only using the knockback when it makes sense, using walls to stop the baddies, or just plain killing the ones kbed. Mine has never been complained to, in fact once I was on a team the leader actively sought others of my ilk. With three on the team, it was just plain dumb funny.

Yeah, and with GvE and Ninja, you can repeatedly jump though the air, essentially flying, but at the jump cap, not the fly cap. I think the fastest I have gone is 63 or so on a lv 46.

IMO, Ninja Run is a true travel power. SS lacks vertical movement without using the raptor pack. SJ is just like a tall NR that takes up a power. Fly is the only one that remains unique, as you can chat while poking through the sky, immune to enemies and all terrain, and also getting to the mission last. Unless a SS fell in a fissure or something. [har har har]

You forgot Teleport, which cannot really be compared to anything else.

Because it always gives the same maintenance message no matter day of the week it is. The only time you'll see a different warning message is if something catastrophic is going on and they have to take a server down on very short notice. Lately we've been getting an extra down day each week as they gradually fix stuff from Issue 17.

And yes, standard scheduled maintenance is once per week on Thursday.

Welcome to CoH! You'll find a lot of info here on the forums, on the Paragon Wiki, or even just by asking people in-game. By and large, we don't bite.

Oh I know. I was just putting out the Normal "warning" to tell OP not to worry too much about those "dooOOomm" sayers about Nrg. I love my Namesake blaster. Totally fun!

Can I ask what NRG is?

Oh, and as far as the "DoooOOoom" folks, I've been playing MMOs long enough now to know that pretty much every MMO has them. Whether they be people that don't like the direction a game has taken or have just grown tired of a game over time and are now convinced they're not tired of it because they've been playing the game for x years and it's stale to them now, but rather it's because The Sky Is Falling.

I tend to ignore that kinda stuff: I'm having fun in-game and enjoying the community so far. That's the only thing I tend to form an opinion of an MMO on.

NRG is shorthand for Energy powersets - melee, aura, blast, manipulation.

Allow me to extend a nod in welcoming you to the game and the forums.

Cheers,

Oh, yea. Sorry. Nrg is Energy. Ele: Electiricty. EA: Energy Aura, etc. You will learn the acronyms soon™
Glad you are having fun! And again, Welcome to the madness.
