Please test your defense heavy characters

I'm thinking something got broken somewhere. Finding tonight on my shield tanks with 45%+ that I seem to be getting hit alot on a wide variety enemies. Council, rikti, cot, you name it. It almost feels as if I don't have very much defense at all.

I'd just like to know if anyone else has noticed this or not. Having been playing tanks very heavy here for quite awhile and usually defense heavy tanks. Something just doesn't seem right with this patch.

Should be easy to test. Just watch your combat log and see what chance enemies have to hit you and what compare that to what chance they Should be getting to hit you.

I know certain powers have a higher chance to hit and higher accuracy. But something just seemed odd to me and I wanted to make sure it wasn't just a bad luck night or something. Tonight was the first night since issue 17 that I've really had the chance to play a decent session but I had been playing a good amount during 16.

Level 54 EB Rikti Heavy Assault suit has a 7.8% chance to hit my claws SR.

5*1.3*1.2 = 7.8

5 for floored tohit
1.3 for level 54
1.2 for boss

Seems to be correct.

Edit: Went ahead and took out a level 54 rikti spawn with 3 bosses. Was actually easier than usual. Defense seems to be working exactly as expected.

Have you paid proper homage to the RNG gods yet? The new issue release may have caused them to feel unappreciated and belligerent. A mob of level 54 Rikti is an appropriate sacrifice that should keep the RNG gods appeased.

Seriously though, don't new issue releases do wonky things to the RNG?

Keep in mind Shield Defense's Defense doesn't have much Defense Debuff Resistance backing it up, so a few machine gun hits (or any number of the myriad of -Def Debuffs critters get) and your Defense will be much lower, or even completely gone.

haha no. I was one of the very unhappy vocal people about that change but this was not from a loss of defense and that was on another character.

I would like to mention that I noticed this issue on my shield/energy melee tank but I'll need to run tests on my other characters. I thought if anything maybe some odd bit of code just got messed up. I know that certain power combinations have been known to cause other odd bugs to occur.

Anyone with a 45%+ defense shield/energy tank out there? I'm going to check my other tanks tonight but maybe someone willing would like to take that power combo and just stand in a few mobs and see if all is normal.

Yeah I keep my ranged, melee and aoe defense in the little box at the bottom of my screen always showing so I know when I need to run or take special actions to deal with debuffs. But it wasn't debuffs as my defense was unchanged.

I think you were just having an unlucky night. I was on my 35 Night Widow earlier and ran into a mob during the "Defeat Burning Daemon" mission from Allen Deslock and I basically died faster than I have ever seen anyone drop on this game. It was the one time where I think every enemy actually hit me rather than miss like they normally do.

Prior to this happening I have noticed that defense has been working as it always has.

on my shield electric tank I feel safe enough to go afk and type this. Nearly everything has a 6% - 7% chance to hit. level 52 rikti although the chief mentalist mesmerize seems to have a 54% chance and hits me quite often. Not sure what the case is there unless that power is supposed to have that high of an accuracy bonus? Other mindcontrol / psi powers bounce off my shield tank hehe.

Shield uses positional defense (melee / ranged / aoe) and protects against attacks flagged with those positions (like Mental Blast, which is ranged). Many (most?) psionic control powers, like Mesmerize, are not flagged with a positional component, and therefore completely bypasses your defense.

So powers like Mesmerize, Dominate, and Blind are your Achilles heel. It's been that way for as long as I can remember, so nothing new.

If there's a problem, it's not affecting everything uniformly. I have a S/L softcapped Fiery Aura tanker and cruised through +0/x8 Crey and Council missions tonight. I monitor S/L defense and it was pegged at 45.3%. I did have problems with a carnie Ringmistress, but that's to be expected.

On my 25 (now 27) elec/regen stalker I soloed Barracuda as a pink EB because she wiped all the 7 MMs on the team with her psi aoes (yes I was teamed with 7 DS MMs lol).

My defs were 46% to all (insps) and nothing hit me. Barracuda wasn't alone, lots of freaks with her.

Sounds like you just hit an unlucky streak to me.

Yeah, so they might have a 5-7% chance to hit you. Doesn't mean all/most of them can't hit that 5% chance.

Also, don't Rikti drones give +tohit?

Yes, every power from Mind Control, as well as powers derived from the powers in Mind Control (Decieve == Confuse, for example), are flagged only as Psionic_Attack. A handful of other power (such as Blind) are similar.

Very few powers lack a Melee/Ranged/AoE vector that aren't Psionic (Fearsome Stare is only tagged with Negative_Energy_Attack).

I wonder if perhaps some enemies to-hits have been altered.

My Elec/Shields scrapper has done is fair share of ITFs, with / without a tank on the team, with/without Cold Defenders and has never took a hit from Rom that could kill him in one.

Then just after the patch that preced i17 I did a run, we had 2 tanks and a Cold Defender, I was well above the softcap without all my toggles on, but I had them on for kicks anyway. I waited for the main tank to gain agro, a good player i've done a few runs with, and followed in with LR>SC and then... oh wait, i'm dead?

the defender had rebuffed, I had the shield which gave the +HP boost. and I got took out for over 2000 HP in 1 hit. K Catastrophic defence failure (and resitance by the looks of it) Pick myself up again, get buffed, walk back in. And down again and that time i'd turned off th agro aura too. happened another few times.

And i just cant figure it out, why was Rommy one shotting me through 80%+ defence some good resistances and 2000+ Hp. Since i17 went live the next day, I haven't done another ITF to see if it was a fluke, or if his scrapper hate and ToHit have gone up naturally. though it wouldn't suprse me if my favourite non-troller character was now pants!

On a side note, did a MS Raid that night after Nursing my wounds and strolled around surviving everything.

Yeah, 95% (cap) is a bit low.

Anyway. Playing alts heavily relying on defense as always, nothing different than usual.

As for the post just above, most obvious thing popping to my mind is Rommie hitting with Soul Drain. It's easy to almost never run into that situation on teams because he dies so fast, but it still happens every once in a while.

Rommie'll do that sometimes. He should go play craps in St. M's for a bit or bet on a Rikti Monkey fight the way he lucks out with the RNG sometimes. It's also not a 1-shot if you've got full health, as there's anti-1-shot code to prevent that, assuming you have full health. He just picked on you that night.

My Shield/Ice tank, who is sitting at 38% def for the 3 positions (and will be softcapped in 2 levels once he trains weave.) played just fine last night. If anything it seemed like he handled his spawns a bit better then usual in all honesty. *shrug* The RNG can be a fickle thing.

Shield can have up to 95% DDR... it is possible.
