It looks good Doom, you have excellent recovery and defenses. Energy Torrent is also a very good idea, I'll have to see if I can fit that into my build some how. Its impossible to have too much AoE

A quick question. On most of these builds, i dont see alot of slots being used on the defense toggles. Tough/Weave seem to have more than the /dark ones. Why is that? Are they topping the defense with 2 or 3 slots? If i knew how, i'd post the build i was thinking of trying in mids, but that's too fancy for my skill levels. lol

Or maybe you kill faster than the defense is needed?

I'm confused about what you're asking.

Are you saying that Weave is under slotted? I tried slotting two Enzyme Exposures into Weave as well as Combat Jumping and it only netted me a few decimals more of defense so I figured I'd go with the increased regeneration as well has a few more hit points rather than the small defense increase.

MY bad. It did sound confusing. It looked like the dark toggles were only using 2-3 slots, but i did the same thing in my build after relooking at it. Ill try to post mine if i can figure it out.

I'm still not satisfied with the level of mitigation that my character has, I still have a lot of trouble fighting x8 +1 Malta. I like to use them as a gauge of toughness for my characters. Can anyone see anyway to raise my defense while keeping the recovery and recharge I currently have?

This is the Spines/Dark build I managed to put together with the help of the forums. It has similar regen/recovery numbers but over 30% S/L Def. Cloak of Fear should also help add to that with the -tohit debuff to baddies. You can just ignore the one purple set thrown in there and use a Posi instead. Doesn't make a huge huge difference.

Quite happy with it now. The uber recharge makes dark regen fast enough and energy torrent is AWESOME. I farm +2/x8 at such a fast pace build-up isn't up between spawns. Typical chain is build-up > energy torrent > throw spines, jump in, spine burst, jump out, throw spines, energy torrent, then another spine burst and i run to next spawn.

The kd on energy torrent is enough that if mobs are close together, i take very low damage. And if it's not enough there's the kd chance in throw spines and the kd on ripper, mobs spend most of the time on their butt, and it's much better mitigation than tough/weave.

It only gets rough when facing an AV, 54 mobs or bosses, but then i'm not trying to be the tank anyway. And if i need that,16 big purple inspirations are enough to wipe a whole room even if i'm the last one standing. It still works well for the scrapper "moments of glory" considering everything dies very fast with that build, 2 medium purple insps are enough to clear a whole room.

Conserver Power + the random temp power that improves recovery and i'm never even close to have endurance problems while spaming my attacks and having low end redux in toggles.

Mobs with high burst still tear me apart if i jump in a pack (like during an ITF) but i didn't feel a huge difference without tough compared to before. Only time i missed it was when Romulus hit me for 99,99% of my hp then a legionary finished me, but this happened as well before.

I really don't think 20 or 30% def is worth losing some long seconds on Dark regen, considering most of the mobs debuff def anyway.

Here's my planned build...endurance *should* be manageable. At the kill rate I wont mind eating a few blues as needed, or detoggling some Res powers that don't apply to the mobs I'm engaging.

I *hate* the slow animation on Impale, so I never use it and it's only there as a set mule...hence the slotting.

Hmm... no one posted a build with soft capped defense so far, guess it's time someone does it.


Weaknesses
Dark Armor has a protection hole when it comes to protection against knockback. I slotted a Steadfast Protection: ResKB IO to offset this at level 10. It provides mag4 KB protection which is enough for most stuff in the game. Unfortunately it's not always enough. The three things that come to my mind instantly are Nemesis Staff attacks which will KB you sometimes and Diabolique and Rikti Pylons. Their attacks KB you always.

Umm... I think that's it.

Survivability is great. The RWZ Scrapper challenge was no challenge. A double RWZ Scrapper challenge was though, though. Had several Mentalists who stayed at range and really hurt. But with a 14s recharge in Dark Regeneration I made it (barely). Dark Regeneration is also a key power to survive cascading defense failure Â… typically on an ITF run.

Unfortunately I couldn't complete a Pylon. I made noticeable progress but all the knockback hurt my DPS a lot so I finally decided to abandon the attempt.

Damage is ok. Recharge is high enough to use Impale – Ripper – Lunge as a ST attack chain. I was worried that slotting Impale with Enfeebled Operation would hurt my ST too much but I didn't really notice a big difference compared to SO damage slotting. Actually I was surprised how good the overall ST performance is in this build (mostly thanks to Ripper). AoE damage is ok, too. But it's not as great as I hoped for. When I teamed with an Elec/Shield it was painfully obvious that I was only on second place when it came to AoE goodness. He was first (and third ).

Endurance management was sometimes a problem while leveling up. But with blue inspirations it's more than ok. I would suggest to take Recovery Serum, too. This is one of the new temp powers. You can buy it really cheap from the market. It has 5 charges and gives +100% recovery for 4 min.
When the build was completed endurance issues were a thing of the past. I have to activate Conserve Power now and then when I use Spine Burst and Throw Spines often, but I never run out of end anymore.

One last thing before I post the build. Some will notice that Tough is deactivated. This is not a mistake. I didn't need it for my survivabilty but I really needed the end, so I decided to only use it as a mule for that GladArmor: +3% Def.

80% rech, 46% melee defense, 1757 hp and no gimped attacks. Endurance should be manageable, the net recovery is pretty much what i have with my current build.

Now i'm really considering something like that as a second build, though not fitting Hasten in there makes me sad. Going back to the crap slotting in Impale would be enough to put Hasten instead of maneuvers but i wouldn't be happy with lower ST damage and lower AoE compared to my current build.

I wonder if it's really worth it and if the survivability is awesome enough to make up for the loss of AoE dmg, as i currently run with 105% global rech + hasten and energy torrent.

Well, I for one really, REALLY do not like hvng endurance issues. I decided to build a scrapper that would never have any sort of problem. I also wanted something that would be able to belt out plenty of AoE DPS. The only thng I could possibly want to add to this build isa tad of global recahrge. I have very little in this build. As of this moment, this build is about 80% complete, only big things I still need is most of teh ragnarok set and the numina's recovery unique. Once it is done I will hbae to see if there is any dark armor build with enough endurance recovery to satisfy me!

Holy crap that is a lot of recovery, I'll go as far to even say too much recovery. You'd be great at 4 end/s of recovery and then building for defense.

I noticed some builds have taken Energy Torrent...Why on earth would you do that as a Spines/DA when you actually WANT things clumped together? Was there a change in the past 9 months while I was gone to ET that doesn't throw mobs all over the damn map or something?

I have no idea how I overlooked that.. Of course, it could be due to not ever having taken the power and used it on any of my Scrap builds in 6+ years.... ; P LOL

Although, I'll still say- with most builds having Throw Spines recharging in 3.x seconds, it's enough to do the chain of Throw Spines + Spine Burst + Throw Spines once you jump in for SB, and then jump back out and line the TS cone up again. I think Energy Torrent would be a bit sub-optimal being that Throw Spines is more damage and can just be recycled again right after Spine Burst.

It's especially sub-optimal if you get get a good Ripper off in the chain: Throw Spines + Ripper + Spine Burst > Throw Spines. Really no place for energy torrent when you consider it's less damage than all the above.

Hi everyone, Santorican, I am currently using your build below on my 50th Spines/DA Scrapper Deadly Battle Bug on the Freedom server. Do you have a updated Issue 19 build off hand? I think I read that issue 19 will have the fitness pool and hurdle standard on every build, is that correct? If so we can add more powers to our builds, which would be awesome. the problem is that you won't be getting any more slots. so you will still need to slot up stamina and possibly health if you are using it to hold recovery procs. so in most cases, you will be looking at taking things that can get by with the base slot, maybe a rez power you didn't have room for, or throw in the taunt that scrappers almost never take, things like that.

on my SR, I may use the extra powers to get aid self. it would work fine with its base slot for a quick HP boost every once in a while. obviously, dark doesn't need aid self but it will mainly be things to help with QoL like SJ or SS to make travel between missions a bit quicker.
