Excellent Arcs

There are so many excellent arcs out there that never get played. By excellent, I mean 4 star arcs. If you read the word that goes with 4 stars, it says excellent. We should all be happy to have arcs that people rate as excellent, but sadly as the current MA system stands these "excellent" arcs only get played if we ask people to play them.

I have been thinking of a way to get plays for our 4 star arcs and came up with the idea of starting this thread.

Here are the rules:

You post an arc from an active MA author that is currently rated 4 stars. The author must be an active player. This is so we are supporting arcs of people who still care about MA and who our support and feedback will mean something to. It can be a current poster on this board, someone you know, or someone who responds to an in-game PM. It needs to be an arc that you have played and have rated 4 or 5 stars. At that same time you may post one of your own arcs if you choose. It also must be rated 4 stars.

If you find a 4 star arc that you want in this thread from an author who has not posted here, PM the author and let them know about this message board. This way, maybe we can grow this message board community at the same time as getting plays for excellent arcs.

In your post give the arc ID, author and why you liked it.

Please post only arcs that are currently rated 4 stars. If an arc that was rated 4 stars at the time of submission becomes 5 stars, it may remain on the list until the author requests it be removed (this is because arcs can easily be 4 one day, 5 the next, and then back to 4). At the time that an author requests a 5 star arc be removed, he or she can replace it with any of his or her 4 star arcs.

If you cannot find 4 star arc from a current author that you want to recommend, but want to submit a 4 star arc of your own, you can play an arc on the list that you have not played yet. After playing it, PM the author with some in game feedback. Then post on this thread which arc you played and what you liked best about the arc. In that post you can submit your own 4 star arc to the thread.

In Summary:

1. Post the ID of a 4-star rated arc by another current MA author.
2. If you like, you may also post the arc ID of one of your 4 star rated arcs that you would like people to play.

OR

1. Play an arc on this thread that you have not yet played and provide in-game feedback to the author.
2. Post on this thread the name and ID of the arc you played and what you liked best about it and in that post submit your own 4 star arc to the thread.

As time permits, I will update this post with a list of arc IDs.

I will kick this off with one of my favorite "Excellent Arcs":

Death to Disco
ID: 84420
Author: @Wrong Number

I picked this arc to kick off this thread because the detail and crafting that went into the customs in this arc is amazing and because every time I play the arc I smile.

My arc that I would like played is:

Suppression
ID: 374481
Author: @Gypsy Storm

It is my tribute to the Wizard of Oz CoH style. NOTE: At the moment the XP in mission one is low due to the latest patch.

Erm, did you mean 'forum section' instead of 'thread'? Cause, for example, Wrong Number hasn't posted in this thread, though you're recommending his arc. And you suggested that we get authors to post in the 'announce your arc' thread, not this one....?

As to point your first point, you are right thank you. I meant people who have posted in the forum.

As to your second point what I meant was if you find a story arc that you would like to post in this thread from an author who had not posted on this forum, you should PM the author and suggest that he or she post the arc in the thread entitled "Live: Announce You Latest Creation". This way that person is made aware of this forum.

After they have posted in this forum, then you can post their arc to this thread.

Sorry for the confusion and thank you for the clarification

Every one of my arcs in my sig is lost in the "4-star haze", except for A Wake For Dead 6, which is at five stars but only has 4 plays.

I imagine everyone here is familiar with one or two of them as they've been in a number of the player-run contests. I've never won those so I feel a little cheesy tossing them out again, but there you go; gotta hustle for plays when you're at the 4-star level, right? So they're "worth nominating, never a winner" - pretty much seems to define what you're after. Think of the movies that didn't win best picture at the Oscars: chances are there's still something there you might enjoy.

(I think most of them will suffer the XP hit that's current on live though, so it might be worth waiting until that's dealt with, if that's a concern.)

As usual, I was confusing, so I clarified my initial post. Clave, pick an arc of another MA author with a 4 star rated arc that you would like to support and also tell me which of your 4 star arcs you would like to promote and I will update this first post with both.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks so much for posting in this thread.

I think that's actually a smidge exclusionary though I know you don't mean it that way. There's a number of hidden gems in the MA from people who don't check the forums at all. I'd have to say the main problem is the search engine which winds up hiding a lot of arcs.

Yeah, I don't really see why it has to be people that post in these forums. I would think if you really wanted to get arcs out there that aren't getting enough play it should be from the hidden gems of the people who don't post here.

I gotta ask - 20 level 50s? Holy Cow!

No offense, but I can't imagine how much time that must have taken.

EDIT: I see you joined the forum Dec 2004, so assuming 5 years and a few months in change of playtime, that means you've leveled a character to 50 about every 3 months on average. Figure anywhere form 40 to 80 hours to do that. So, 40 to 80 hours per three month period, or about 20 hours/month on average, for 5+ years playing? That's commitment.

I am terribly sorry about that, ArrowRose. I feel pretty stupid now. But, no time like the present to make up for it, right?

1. Post the ID of a 4-star rated arc by another MA author who has posted on this forum in the the last 30 days.

The Echo by MrCaptainMan, ID#1688
: I found the pathos in this arc to be well worth the chained boss fights that a few have grumbled about. Play this arc and soon you'll find yourself rushing to the next boss to get that next part of the the story. I don't play MA arcs even a quarter as much as I'd like to so who knows what I've missed, but the story behind this one is one of the very few that's really stuck with me.

2. If you like, you may also post the arc ID of one of your 4 star rated arcs that you would like people to play.

For my own I'll simply things and mention just one, Against The WickerWork Khan! #346904. It's probably my most accessible story, so no one will end up confused (I really like playing with the format of missions, but that tends to confuse some players - so it goes). It sat at 5 stars for a bit but has finally (inevitably?) dropped back into the 4-star fog.

Again, big BIG apologies on my misunderstanding of the rules.

Arc #338380, "Talos Vice" by @PW (Police Woman). A great (albeit short) arc, especially if you're leveling up a newbie and looking for alternate content.

For my own, I'll plug "Blowback", #4643. I don't think it's my best (I won't say which one I think is so as not to plug two arcs) but it's got the most plays so far (which is not saying much, 85 plays).

Heh, yeah I pretty much play nightly. The early years it was 3-6 hours a night (give or take) and more on the weekends, now not nearly that much. I'm a bit of a nightowl, so that helps. I do though have a social life and other hobbies, I'm not a shut in and I like being around people. 20 hours/month.............pffft easy!

My first 50 took around 9 months (my game start date is Aug 04 btw) and almost 1000 hours. Now when I check most of my 50s take around 120-140 hours or so and typically its through regular teaming (my crew pretty much runs normal content/arcs and rarely TF). I have two accounts (while I can dual box, I rarely do unless its to transfer) which I made back in the days before expanded server slots. I have typical altitis so I won't necessarily play one character all the time, so there isn't a real reliable calander time from 1-50 (3 months sounds right though). No real secret or short cut. Just consistent play and love for the game. Except right now, my compy is on the mend, hoping to get it back tomorrow.

I recommend "Celebrity Kidnapping" (#1388) by @PW. Pokes good fun at Paris Hilton if she were a fire-blasting mutant and has enough backstabbing between all the villainous parties to brighten (darken?) any villain's day.

I'll plug "All in the Family" (#128109) because it's the better of my two arcs and I have to thank Venture for the accolades and nomination for Dev's Choice-ing. :P

The intent is not to be exclusionary. In fact, it is quite the opposite. My hope is that people will find gems written by people who have not posted on this forum. When they do, they should PM the author and let them know about this forum. The author only needs to post his or her arc in the announce the arc thread or make any other post on the forum and then his or her arc can be posted here.

For me this is a win/win. We get another great arc to play and the author is made aware of the forum. It took me a long time to find out about it and I wish I had found out sooner.

I also want to be sure that the gems posted here are gems by authors who are still playing the game. This thread is to help encourage and support current MA authors. I am sure there are many great arcs out there by people who no longer play and while we may enjoy them, our feedback won't help the authors.

My hope is that this thread helps us overcome the black hole of 4 star arcs and allows deserving authors to get feedback and plays.

Also, you just reminded me that I still haven't given it a few fixes on stuff raised since PW's review of it. I'll need to get on that. :/

From a quick skim of the arcs I've reviewed, I would recommend The Coldest of Wars (299972). It's a fun arc with lots of corny goodness.

I hate to keep sticking on this point and I swear I'm not trying to derail your efforts.

Not every player is comfortable/likes/wants to participate on the forums. In fact a vast majority of players have no use for the forums. If you want to encourage them to do more good work and create more awesome arcs, this isn't the only place to do that. It's the only place for some of us maybe, but not for everyone.

If you really want to encourage new authors, leave them good and encouraging comments, invite them to come here if you like (some people or shy or don't have the time). By announcing a good arc here they will get more plays....more plays will encourage them to make more arcs, etc etc.

I'm just seeing the same arcs being promoted here that are always being promoted, and to be fair we already know they are awesome.

Sorry derail over.

I completely agree that Talos Vice is an excellent arc. In fact it is one of my favorite arcs. However, in going through the list of arcs, I noticed that it is currently a 5 star arc, sitting on page 3 with 154 plays, so I hope it will get the attention it deserves.

Since the idea of this thread is to help us find and promote arcs that are sitting in the 4 star black hole, I ask that people do not submit current 5 star arcs to this thread. I do know that at one time Talos Vice was at 4 stars, and so since I did not check it before posting for now it will stay on the list.

I have personally experienced with my own arc that it is possible to bounce back and forth bewteen 4 and 5 stars and if a 4 star arc supported here becomes 5, it does not need to be immediately withdrawn from this thread because the next day it may be back in the 4 star black hole.

That being said, I am going to leave it up to the author of the arc to decide if and when his or her 5 star arc should be withdrawn from this list. At that time, I will move it to my Must Play/Fun Arcs thread and allow the author to suggest another of his or her current 4 star arcs to be put in its place on this thread.

I'll second that. When I reviewed it it was a bit rough around the edges but had enough campy awesome to make it an enjoyable time. There's certainly far worse ways to spend a half an hour or so.

I played this arc today and I loved it as well. At one point I laughed so hard I nearly spit out my coffee. That I kind of expected, but what I didn't expect was the end. I am not a huge fan of fighting bosses but just like Clave, I rushed from boss to boss to hear the next part of the story.

This arc really touched me. Great job!

Pretty sure it was at 4 stars when I posted it....

I saw it as 4 stars as well and it is a great arc so it stays in the list for now.

I have been thinking a lot about this and I have modified the rules. The reason why I had originally specified that the arc must be from current posters on this board was to be sure that the support and feedback went to someone who is around to appreciate and enjoy it, not because I felt only people who post on the board deserve support.

So, I changed the initial post to state that the arc can be from any current MA author. If you are sure the author is currently active, you can suggest his or her arc even if he or she has never posted on a message board. It would be great if you let non-posting authors know about this forum. I found the support and help I got here extremely valuable.

I hope this thread gives us a way to find and play excellent arcs and provide feedback to people who really care.
