Apple isn't interested in developers making applications that run on the greatest common factor between their platform and everyone elses. They want developers that specifically target their platforms, and make applications that specifically target their platforms' strengths, work around their platforms' weaknesses, and distinguish their platform in as many consumer-attractive ways as possible.

It should come as no secret, since that's been their strategy with iPods and iPhones from the start. They really don't care what anyone else does on any other platform in any other context. They really don't care what anyone else expects either. Their message is that Apple products are different, and that difference makes them better, and if you agree, buy one. If you don't agree, buy something else: they don't care. I think you'll find tons of people who either agree with, or disagree with, that message, but no one should be confused as to whether that *is* the message, or whether or not the message has been commercially successful to date.

Agreed. It still makes me frown, though. Thankfully, Android seems to be growing at a frankly meteoric pace, if you correlate the number of apps created per month with marketshare, so this isn't going to be a one-horse iPod race.

Back on topic, the iPad won't get the new iPhone OS update until "Fall". Frankly, I find this to be ridiculous, launching a whole new category of devices, announcing Major Huge Features a mere 5 days later after it has already done all of the world's press, then saying these Major Huge Features won't arrive for many months. In my limited anecdotal evidence, iPad lovers and haters alike agree that this is incredibly annoying.

Running Chrome dev track? Double click edit to get to the full edit screen, it doesn't crash when you use that.

As others have said, Mids! And I would definitely pay for it.

Also, using LogMeIn Ignition, I've been able to kinda play CoH with my iPhone

How is logmein on the iphone working overall?

I've got a free RDP client for android that lets me do pretty much the same thing, but we use LogMeIn at work to access some clients' servers, so I'm tempted to pony up for the android version of ignition once it exits beta.

On Wifi? Awesomely. On 3G it's a little slow, but that's kinda understandable.

You couldn't like, properly play CoH, but I managed to log in and mess around with the character creator.

Suckerpunch is based on java, no? IIRC, the ipod can display java. If not, make an HTML5 version!

Javascript. Not the same thing as Java by a long shot.

SP's planner is already a web application. I'm guessing this is what you mean by HTML5 version, but I've got no actual clue.

It does run in the Mobile Safari browser. It, however, doesn't have the same level of functionality as Mids' planner does, and you can't open your MDH files in the SP planner. There are also little quirks, such as double tapping to add enhancement slots to powers (since you don't really have hover events in these browsers).

Also, as mentioned in my earlier post, SuckerPunch has been absent lately due to real life commitments, and that planner was all his doing.

I'd guess they're talking about HTML5's canvas element which allows all sorts of things to be done completely within the constraints of HTML. Someone did the first level of Super Mario Brothers with it among other things.

Ok, so, I've been playing around with LogMeIn Ignition & CoH some more, seeing how possible it is to do some basic stuff.

First step was logging in:

Not much trouble.

Movement is not possible without making tray buttons for it, so I made some:

These buttons toggle moving left/right/forwards, turning left/right, jumping, and there's a 'stop' button too.

Now I'm able to run around and click on stuff. I'll probably make some buttons that will target and run toward specific NPCs (WW/BM people) too so I can see how easy it is to use the AH.

How's typing on that? I once tried to use I think it was Mocha VNC and the keyboard was pretty terrible(it didn't use the iphone keyboard). The framerate was also really slow, I think it was something like .1 FPS. I'm not expecting framerates to let me do missions or anything, but 1 frame every 10 seconds is pretty terribad. I mean, at least it worked at all considering I didn't know what I was doing and it was a free app. I wouldn't mind paying some money if I could get something with a better interface and better performance.

I'd also be interested in your experiences using it over 3G, especially if you can potentially still do stuff like use the AH and chat.

The keyboard is very similar to the default iPhone OS one and works fine for most things (only for typing though, holding W doesn't move you forward for some reason).

The framerate is pretty decent as long as the whole screen isn't changing. Something static like the AH wall/window should be fine. With some patience I was able to move from the AH to to the Atlas statue....it wasn't easy though, and the framerate was really crappy.

I'll test it on 3G later and see how responsive it is.

Yeah, but now that they're out there on Photobucket, just log into your Photobucket account and edit them. I think that the web site has a built-in rotate edit function.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

/this. Since Jobs seems to envision the future being entirely based on HTML5 (and displayed on a "revolutionary" tablet device!) I figured that would make sense for the iPad. But hey if it already works, it already works. Certainly it's not as full-featured as mids, but we are talking about doing it on the iPad, not a tablet with a full OS.
