Family Talk Therapy
I have joined and left JS 3x now, each time for the same basic reason, but highlighted by different parties. I don't care what the Message of the Day says, some topics, having nothing to do with the game, just don't need to dominate the discussion. Time and again I've seen individuals jumped on for speaking their minds when the banter drifts into the realm of the too too weird. Polite consideration for fellow players has been replaced with, at times, an in-your-face hostility. JS is not alone is this aspect by any means, but we're just talking about JS at the moment.
As for "doing", I agree with Kid's observations, and sadly cannot offer any counter-point.
Here again I agree with Kid, by and large Protector is a mixed bag of "camps" who occupy the same space without actually interacting in a meaningful way. We have JS and Protector Vigilance. We have PvP and PvE. We have KJSR and those who $%#@ about it. The list goes on and on, our server is not the only one with this dynamic in place, but we were one of the few servers where those differences didn't seem to matter much, if at all. These days, they seem pretty big.
In part, I think this last observation is amplified by the infamous mid-issue blues. We're rolling up on another new issue, and Going Rogue is just visible on the horizon. Add to this the recent departure of several active, highly vocal players and you have a nice recipe for a general "meh". This is not to say there is not now a very real undertow happening on Protector. Here again, I think I'm as guilty as anyone else when I catch myself thinking, "Well, [insert player name here] left the game yesterday, but I still have all my pals, so everything's okay." Yes, that's over-simplifying the point, but I think that's how most people see it, that is until one of their own dear, good friends leaves too. (Miss ya Elric)
I honestly hope this thread and the frank opinions shared herein help Protector or, more accurately, helps us help our server.
I read this response from kidengineer in another thread, and thought the statements were worth a thread of their own.

I miss the days when Jello Shooters was actually a Protector channel.
A) Since Jello Shooters is a Global Channel, it can not be definition be restricted to only one server...
B) ... but if you mean "Jello Shooters was actually a channel patronized by people playing on the Protector server", well, from what I can see it is still mostly true: JS is my main channel when I want to join teams, and I haven't seen "LFM for a Katie on Guardian" on it yet...
... but it is also true that some of its "first hour's regulars" have gone to play on other servers, for whatever valid reasons they have (RP, PvP, friends, etc.). So what's the harm if some of them are chiming in while playing on Virtue or (shudder) Freedom ?
I miss the days when the server actually had spirit, we had a mascot, we had things like Robot Rampage and RP Task Forces (Not my thing, but still thought it was cool), we were a server of doers.
I replied to the "mascot" bit in the original thread, modesty prevents me from repeating it here...
Nowadays, we have Rush The Riktis, weekly Hami raids, StrikeForce Sundays (sp?), etc...
I miss the days when this was a close-knit community.
I would say the Christmas Cards Exchange, the recent Server Invasions, even the Mentor program are proofs that we are still a close-knit community. The problem is, we are also a much smaller community due to attrition - which is normal in a 5 years old game.
I look around today and is a little saddened. Jello shooters was silent for a good portion of the evening.
You've ever been to a pub on a Monday night ? It can be deader than a dead rat. You go to the same place on a Saturday night, and it's booming.
Global Channels also have busy periods and dead periods, one evening is not enough to generalize.
I see people complaining and I see few stepping up and doing things to better the community. WTH happened to us?
We got old ?
Now, get off my lawn !!!

Run organized teams to get the kill badges for accolades: gears, Freak tanks, vampires, werewolves, and of course Fake Nemeses.
Do like Impyre and the rad superteam, but on hero side - except, really, we need more dark defenders, so make it 3Ds. MOAR DARK!
Did we EVER find out how many kinetics' Inertial Reduction we needed to get a granite tank airborne?
The amount of /Dark villain side more than makes up for the lack of it hero side.
Just wait till Rogue comes out, you'll get tired of us.
Now, if you wanted to make a group exotic Defenders, like Cold or Sonic, I'd be in for that (specially since I heard we're suppose to get more character slots with Rogue).
Give people a reason to get involved with the Protector community, as opposed to any of the other smaller servers that have suffered the same population decline. Structure ingame events that build on this server's reputation for creativity, particularly in writing.
I suggest a MA competition similar to the FArt competition being held in the fanart section. Every month, contestents are given a them and have to make a short MA arc based on the theme. Maybe the winner at the end will get a prize or something cool. Entries would be judged on design, creative writing skills, etc.

I won't comment on Jello Shooters, since I haven't been a member of that channel for nearly a year now, but this is something near and dear to my heart:
I see people complaining and I see few stepping up and doing things to better the community. WTH happened to us? |
I do still believe that Protector is a very close-knit community, and that's reaffirmed every time I go to RtR and recognize most of the players there by their globals or supergroups, or every time a situation like the hurt-and-heal here on the forums arises and we all band together to defend our server's honor. There's not a whole lot of Protectorites compares to other servers, but we're definitely not the smallest server, and I've been told by players who have transferred from other servers that we're a very tolerant server overall. There is no playstyle (except maybe PvP) that doesn't have a niche on Protector.
I guess all I can really say is, Protector's changed a lot since I joined CoH. Some of the changes may not be for the better, but, again, change is the only constant. I believe that if this thread can be an open, thoughtful, tolerant discussion of different playstyles and different points of view, it could go a long way to bring Protectorites even closer together, and maybe start the pendulum swinging back the other way.
Well since this is 'family therapy' I am going to be the creepy uncle that no one wants to sit next to.

Umm... am I allowed to speak? Honestly I don't know because I don't really feel apart of the community, namely because I didn't realize it existed until, I'd say, Decemeber of '09.
Hi, I'm Sterling Steel. Maybe some of you know me from "Forming up (insert Task Force here)." on various channels that I have seemingly stumbled across. I am the Super Leader of Project Checkmate. PC was left to me when Arkham Night left to rejoin his family in splotchy internet land last June. Since then, Project Checkmate has rolled into the Number One spot (by prestige) on Protector.
With that said, I think we are part of the problem. We have found such a great group that we tend to keep to ourselves. I know that our use of Ventrilo can sometimes leave non-PC players thinking we are stand-off-ish or we are just ignoring them. Hell, I think some of my people have just out and out ticked off some of the community through chat or what-not. God, I really don't want a misunderstanding to leave my SG with a stigma that PC is an arrogant bunch of a-holes. Yes, I am paranoid that people are avoiding us.
But then again, like I said before, we aren't going out there and searching you out. I'm starting to change the mindset. Our long-term membership is looking at what to do now that we did take Number 1. It's time we stepped out of our shells and embraced the rest of Protector. It's time Project Checkmate to join up on the Server events.
Well, I can't speak for everybody in PC (maybe I'm suppose to because I'm the Super Leader, but I'd rather they made decisions for themselves), but I'm out there and would love to meet some of you guys. Send a tell to @Sterling Steel if yer ever looking for someone to team with, or maybe you want some info on what's up with Project Checkmate and maybe we can run an event together or something. And we need ACTIVE Coalies! I hate saying hello on Coalie and getting no response. (Feeds the paranoia)
Wow, I feel like I'm trying to sell the SG. That's not my intent. Basicly what I'm trying to say is we are out there, we are active, and I want my SG to be more community active. I want to share the fun we have together with the rest of you. I'm rambling now, so that usually means I'm saying too much. So I'll end this post now. Thanks.
(Oh, and if my paranoia is true and the Protector Community does hate us, someone please let me know!)
edit: Okay, Innocent Wrath just shot past us, we are Number 2. I'm not worried, we'll get it back. We are finding the Prestige Race really exciting!)
Hot damn, Frozen, that's a good idea!

Whoa, I didn't expect that post to be looked over like this in its own thread, must less posted by someone whom I've had some heavy disagreements with in the past. Thank you, BH. But I don't think I have much else to add to this as some of the responses already covered what I would have added.
If somebody you're arguing with goes off the deep end, don't follow.
I'll pop in to give my two cents on some of this stuff, because I think Kid and Ice's comments were spot on, though in some cases I think they may not have gone far enough.
I miss the days when Jello Shooters was actually a Protector channel.
Yeah, me too. And I know why, and why the server has become increasingly hostile towards newcomers and more intolerant, and it goes along with this:
I miss the days when the server actually had spirit, we had a mascot, we had things like Robot Rampage and RP Task Forces (Not my thing, but still thought it was cool), we were a server of doers.
I'm a five-year-plus vet. In my five years, I've seen a lot of Protector greatness. I was on the first successful Hami raid on Protector, and we were what, second or third in the entire game in beating him, an incredible feat given our always low population. Kid and his usual Regulars post some of the fastest record times for TF's across all servers on a regular basis (I know this - I've been in a few). When new challenges pop up, Protector leads the way, almost always either completing the task first or being in the top few that do a task first.
And yet, we're belittled on other servers. People (and you've seen them) like to think that they need to come over to our server and our forums and show us poor little Protectorites how to play, which at least once recently got someone red-repped for doing it. I've personally seen people on JS actively recruiting for other servers.
I know people from other servers have good ideas to share, but when their sentences to vets start off with, "let me show you how we do this better on [server x]," they don't go over well. So I tend to listen less and actively look for new people rarely. And I won't even go into how I feel about all the people fleeing Protector lately for other servers, especially when the excuse is population. You're certainly not helping population for the rest of us by moving, now are you?
I miss the days when this was a close-knit community.
No offense, Kyo, but
I do still believe that Protector is a very close-knit community, and that's reaffirmed every time I go to RtR and recognize most of the players there by their globals or supergroups, or every time a situation like the hurt-and-heal here on the forums arises and we all band together to defend our server's honor. |
You recognize globals at the RtR because you see those same globals every RtR. I bet you recognize a lot of globals because you team with them night after night. Do you recognize globals beacuse you see them all over, commenting and running a variety of toons through mish arcs or TFs? I bet you don't. I don't mean this as an attack on you personally, I really don't. But I knew way more toons/globals back in the day, because people HAD to do more with a variety of folks. That is no longer the case. Face it. AE has changed the game. Oroborous has changed the game. Radios have changed the game. They've made it easier for people to level without having to really interact with a variety of others. And everyone knows it. I bet you two-thirds of the people you RtR with don't have a clue who many of the real movers and shakers and long-termers even are on this server any more, and that's a sad fact.
I look around today and is a little saddened. Jello shooters was silent for a good portion of the evening. I see people complaining and I see few stepping up and doing things to better the community. WTH happened to us?
There are 200 people on the JS channel most nights, but of the 200, ten talk. Someone asks for a team, 200 people in the channel no one responds. So people start to leave. They go find populated servers. They fall for it when someone says, 'come to our server, there's always a team/conversation.'
I love Protector. I've been here since the first month. And yes, I'll turn the lights off when I leave. But if you want family therapy, let's lay it on the line. Our family's nuts and hates itself. We certainly put the FUN in dysfunctional, but we're still dysfunctional.
Witchfrost touched on something that, for lack of better phrasing, I'll call a pet peeve.
I bet you two-thirds of the people you RtR with don't have a clue who many of the real movers and shakers and long-termers even are on this server any more, and that's a sad fact. |
I hear WAY too many statements like this:
"Well, I've been here since Beta, and let me tell YOU something, New Player ! Back before ED, we were GODS ! I recall when Someone You Never Heard of and Doesn't Play Anymore, But People Still Invoke Like He or She Belongs in Some Pantheon did The Thing You Just Asked About, and Did It A Helluva Lot Better Than You Can Ever Hope to Achieve !"
I understand "bragging rights" play a role in this game; Witchfrost touched on how Protector's achievements were noteworthy, and they certainly are. I understand people- especially good players- are missed by those they played with. But at what point does fond rememberance turn into "You should listen to me solely because I've been here longer and knew people you didn't." ? When the "glory days" talk becomes exclusionary, new players tune out. Why ? Because they have no idea who the heck you're talking about. It's just that stupidly simple. If you had any intent of passing along any wisdom, you blew it at that point.
Wolfie and I arrived literally days after the Croatoa issue dropped. We knew and played with many of the people who are name dropped regularly, and maybe some none of you would know but who were still skilled. But they're gone now. Now she and I are among the upcoming generation of "old timers." We can say "I played with Famous Name, and MY GOD IT WAS GLORIOUS !" But we don't. If those people taught you something, great. Pass it along, and give credit when it's due.
But maybe, instead of constantly invoking the ghosts, we can say instead "Let me introduce you to someone I've played with recently, and whose skills I admire." It builds the community that we seem to agree is strongly needed on Protector, and no one feels like they're not welcome at the party just because they got here late.
Now, as far as new players being jerks and getting the ignore they deserve... that's another rant

I'm not trying to claim bragging rights. I'm not even pining for the old days, when men were men, and women were...well, not men, I guess. Whatever. Anyway, I like the new game. I like the new players. I'm simply saying the new players aren't making the bonds and performing the heroics like they used to. They aren't asking for help like they used to. No one's yelling at clouds and shouting to them about leaving their lawn, because no one's talking to each other at all, except the already established groups.
No one can say this:
"Let me introduce you to someone I've played with recently, and whose skills I admire." |
No one, especially me, is trying to say that anyone should listen to anyone's advice just because they've been around a while. But because I've been around a while, I notice what is and isn't different in the community. And while it's always been the case that Protector has been a bunch of bickering mobs, it's become more crystallized as of late.
You're pretty hard on the "I knew so-and-so" conversation, which I can understand and you do have a point. But it also has a value you overlook, which partly could help your initial complaint. You want a sense of community, but who are our community leaders? When people don't know the vets with experience, who are they going to listen to? I'll admit I'm hypocritical in a way, because I'm certainly not going to take some random 3-monther up on leading a Hami raid. On the other hand, the long-timers arent being listened to by some of the newcomers because you can get to 50 without ever leaving AP, so what advice does a vet have for them? How to street hunt?
Community starts with respected leaders, with experience, and newer players who want to learn. Our server has experienced players, who hate each other, only banding together in their hatred of noobs (we miss you Elric) and lust for merits. It's no wonder the community is non-existent.
And for the record, I have no gripe with you either, Hulkers. I've run with you on more than one occasion. Just remember, when I'm being sarcastic, it's not meant to be mean. And if it was mean, remember, Sooner made me do it.
Whenever I get bitter and nostalgic about the good 'ol days, I just form an 8 man Positron PUG, preferably inviting folks with unknown globals. As I lay dead in some nameless Boomtown sewer, I imagine the moment when Boresight breaks, Cortex crumbles, and the ancient pixels are refreshed once more. Unleash the Kraken!

I don't miss the days of Jello Shooters being "Protector Only." Frankly, I always disliked such an isolationist stance. I remember those days, when I could only have twelve characters on this server and I would get chastised for playing my other characters on Triumph or Champion. Did anybody think they could join me there? No.
As for the server spirit, I don't really have an opinion on that. Some of the people I saw creating that spirit changed dramatically. People who once seemed friendly became suddenly hostile. I didn't understand the reason for the changes, and no explanation seemed forthcoming, just a simple "accept it, fool." Certainly, the old days seemed carefree and fun, but even then, as now, rub certain individuals the wrong way and get ready to be a pariah.
The current state of Jello Shooters makes me sad, too. However, I don't know what shot in the arm it needs. Every time I ask what's happening, ask for help, or ask for a TF/SF team and I get back some snarky comment, I think to myself "perhaps I should just stop asking here."
My Stories
Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.
I miss the days when Jello Shooters was actually a Protector channel.
It is still a Protector channel. When anyone asks about teaming for a few missions/TF/SF or they need help with a specific mission (ex: no warning about 3+ bombs to click at the same time comes to mind) personally I assume they are on Protector, unless they say otherwise.
I'm a soloist - for the most part. So I may be on Champion, Virtue or any of the other servers because I have alts I created way back when we only had 8 slots per server and my creativity was unchecked. I use JS to keep in touch with what is going on on Protector & if I can help someone I'm more than happy to switch out. I think that the perception that we who use JS do not like other server LFT chatter is true - to a point.
Some of the (newer?) members may not know the history of how and why the channel was started and that can lead to ... dare I say - out-n-out flamewars in channel about : "This is for Protector Only" vs. "Why can't we even Mention another server (we are/ may need help on)" That is something that I am very sorry to say does need to be worked on. It is up to us, each individual member, to try and temper ourselves and our reaction to 'other server querries' that appear in JS.
That is just how I feel - and I have left JS a few times after some blow-up or other. But I came back to relying on JS after I cooled off. I'm one of the many 'silent majority' most times I'm on but I'll chime in if I feel up to it . Everyone needs a good *chocolate bombing attack* every once in a while.
I miss the days when the server actually had spirit, we had a mascot, we had things like Robot Rampage and RP Task Forces (Not my thing, but still thought it was cool), we were a server of doers
We are a server of doers as others have mentioned - much more eloquently than I. There will be new challenges waiting for our creativity once the new issue & GR arrives - you can count on it. If Badge doesn't come up with some hair-brained idea - there are many others with creativity to spare who'll step up. And I'm sure there are a lot of players who DO have great ideas and act upon them and we may never know about them. Ex: SG only events.
Do I wish that more events were around? Yes. But my time is limited and as River already stated: my desire to herd cats is almost non-existant. A fault that I will own up to. I do try to make it to posted events - and participate with whatever is needed - I also know myself & my nature ... if I do not want people around me - I won't be there but I wish sucess and fun to those who particiate. I also throughly enjoy seeing screen shots from ones I've missed .
I miss the days when this was a close-knit community
We, imho, still are. This is mid-issue. Lots of "a whole-lotta-nuthin' goin' on 'round here." That is my take on it. If it continues after I17/GR ... then I'll start to worry.
I look around today and is a little saddened. Jello shooters was silent for a good portion of the evening. I see people complaining and I see few stepping up and doing things to better the community. WTH happened to us?
I partially answered this above, but to reitterate: I talk when I feel I can add to the conversation, or to respond to querries if I know the answer (not often, but it can happen lol). Otherwise I'm one of the 'silent majority'. I keep up with the community via JS and the forums. With lots of "Bright 'n Shiny New Games" out there fighting for players time and being in-between issues, our community feels a lot like everyone is out-of-town for summer instead of being at home.
That is how I perceive things stand. I may be correct ... I may be totally off-base ... or somewhere in the middle. It's just how I see it. I hope that my opinions/perceptions can help.
Pax

either way my apologies Mr. Grey for my Geico comment last night, I wasn't trying to be an ***, just my wierd sense of humor.
Over the years I have seen a TON of people come and go and come back *me included*
one thing has been constant, the warm welcome we recieve upon our return. I agree that alot has changed in the almost 5yrs I have been here but one thing has remained constant, we still care about our Protector brothers and sister.
The conversation in JS ranges from simple in game banter to what sometimes seems to spiral into an out of control BITCHFEST, but hey it's still fun to read. There is always someone trying to put a small something together and someone willing to join.
There are definetly times when JS and every other global channel can seem a bit dismal(sp) at times, and there are times when we just can't "shut the hell up".
New and old players alike have thier clicks, I know I do but that doesn't mean that I don't branch out and enjoy the company of a *non regular* from time to time.
We have our "elitest" who think they know everything about the game and how it should be played, and they probably do. We have our freaks who spend insane amounts of time trying to think of crazy ways to do things just because we can and thats fun too.
I guess what it comes down to is that yes we are ALL getting older and our priorities have changed but that doesn't mean we still don't care.We just aren't around as much as we used to be.
I like to make goofy comments and mess around on shooters from time to time and there are those of you who play along and make it fun...thank you.

If we can keep the responses honest, we may learn something. If this turns into a flame war... well, that's an answer in itself, isn't it ?
