Family Talk Therapy
... I do see people stepping up. I see things like Strike Force Sundays, Task Force Tuesdays, the Mentor Project, the N P C channel, Protector Vigilance, scheduled TFs, weekly rp nights (for some people, anyhow)...
|
But then I realized that it may simply have been a different way to word what I've also noticed happening in 6+ years of playing and running server events: Players expect or "want" more than they can (or are willing to) "give".
This is just my perspective on the majority wanting to "log in, be entertained, log out" versus a minority wanting to invest themselves into supporting projects they believe in. It's an observation, not an accusation.
No group is better than the other, it's just the way things are. Some derive satisfaction from seeing ingame organized projects flourish. Most prefer to have a selection of activities they can choose from without any real involvement in their management.
To each his own.
I've seen once motivated, enthusiastic people lose interest almost overnight in server-wide projects simply because there was no one to support their efforts. The ROI just isn't there for most ideas that are launched. When the time you invest in something doesn't pay off somehow, it becomes really hard to justify throwing more of yourself into it.
The Praesidium mega SG coalition, The Herolympics on Protector (originally launched by the Defenders of the Night, to be honest, and then taken up by the Praesidium), PVP server events, New Player Welcoming Night, etc. The list of good ideas that fizzled out of the public eye goes on.
On that note, I'm giving a quick nod of approval to Rasta (oldest member of PERC on Protector), Sooner / Ice_9 (Praesidium), and DJKyo / bamaWolfie (New Player Welcoming Night) to recognize their relatively thankless efforts in at least trying to make things work despite some harsh conditions. There are more who could be singled out, but these examples were closer to me personally.

Here's an example of what I'm saying: My latest idea for a server (now cross-server) event was the Mentor Project. Days, weeks were spent talking it out with Protectorites. Points were made, counterpoints followed. It was great seeing the idea pick up interest. The players were designing it as they thought it would work best.
And then it launched.
...and only a fraction of the people who had discussed / critiqued it got personally involved.
This is not a complaint - the volunteers we do have are doing an awesome job so far. But already I can see that this will grow and thrive faster on other servers than here where it was dreamed up (/salute to Badstorm, wherever she is, for the initial concept). Those who did not participate as volunteers after spending time discussing the pros and cons must have had their reasons.
That's just the way things are on Protector. But knowing this, it's no surprise that individuals willing to jump through the hoops are a rare breed. Or masochists. I'm still not sure about this one.
As for the Jello Shooters channel I've always thought of it as the original Protector channel. I wasn't aware that it had problems being defined as such but then I haven't been in there for months now.
When I spearheaded the relaunch of Protector Vigilance it wasn't to become a competition for JS. It was because there was a gap that needed to be filled in the category of a server-wide channel that was more family-friendly (read: loosely moderated). It was never an either / or thing. Protector Vigilance is a channel that the server population needed, and the numbers gained in the short time it's been relaunched support that.
Not surprisingly, even this was frowned upon by some.
Boricua, that was Storm Angyl (Heather Hoffman). Her brother, from whom we had obtained permission to run this in her honor), contacted me again a few months ago since he recalled what we had done and was getting back into the game.
I'm touched people remember the event, and the community spirit that fueled it.
PS -
Make this happen, seriously. Do it.

Well then, think we can find 52 or 54 kins? Let's get someone airborne! I wanna slingshot a stone tank across Portal Court!

At the '08 Hero-Con, Castle said it would take about 100 stacked IR's.
We should totally be able to make this happen! I bet we wouldnt even need 100 kins - more like 40-50 - with everyone speed boosting, we could get IR's recharge way down and stack it 2 per person...
We can do this!

Witchfrost hit many points which I agree with.
We are HERMITS people! We stick to our small hermit communities within our small community. When I refer to this server, I always say it's the hermit server; the person I'm telling this to will go ask: "Hermit server?". I reply; "Yes, we're all a bunch of small groups of hermits, who just play within our groups. God forbid we go outside of our small circles!"
I can't say I was best friends with Storm Angyl, but she was one of those people I remember getting on the game, and she would always send me a tell saying "Hi, do you need a team?" It was warm and homey feeling. I miss that, but I am not new to this game. I have been Healing Phoenix, and other personas for almost 5 years now, (yes I am saying how many years I've been here, not to express how better I could be, but to show I know the changes in our community,) and why should I expect to see that when I can just sign onto my ventrilo server and be greeted by the same people I play with everyday? It's not that I avoid my private tells, I just hardly look at them anymore.
I was never a part of Jello Shooters, it was a channel I was never invited to and frankly never joined. It wasn't based on the people who where on that channel, it was simply because "I stuck to the same group I played with." Why out source myself when I have my friends to play with? Sure, I know many of you from running PERC Events like Kyo, Stale, Bama, Angel Red, Stale JR, and a few more, but it's not like I team with them on a daily basis... I do try and say hello when I can, but why even open my friends list when they're all on my ventrilo?
Like Sooner said, We are Protector!
Brief interlude I made a separate thread for the discussion of launching Stone Tanks into orbit. Please use it
I'm not trying to be snarky here, but we finally have some great conversation going about issues that run end to end on this server, the resolution (or at least addressing) of which may help our "community" grow, and it seems like the Kin thing just kind of got jammed in there non sequitir style.
Flames go to me at @bamahulk. Comments on launching the Stoney go over yonder ::indicates new shiny thread::, and finally... passionate thoughts go on the next post after I get done babbling here.

Umm... am I allowed to speak? Honestly I don't know because I don't really feel apart of the community, namely because I didn't realize it existed until, I'd say, Decemeber of '09.
Hi, I'm Sterling Steel. Maybe some of you know me from "Forming up (insert Task Force here)." on various channels that I have seemingly stumbled across. I am the Super Leader of Project Checkmate. PC was left to me when Arkham Night left to rejoin his family in splotchy internet land last June. Since then, Project Checkmate has rolled into the Number One spot (by prestige) on Protector. With that said, I think we are part of the problem. We have found such a great group that we tend to keep to ourselves. I know that our use of Ventrilo can sometimes leave non-PC players thinking we are stand-off-ish or we are just ignoring them. Hell, I think some of my people have just out and out ticked off some of the community through chat or what-not. God, I really don't want a misunderstanding to leave my SG with a stigma that PC is an arrogant bunch of a-holes. Yes, I am paranoid that people are avoiding us. But then again, like I said before, we aren't going out there and searching you out. I'm starting to change the mindset. Our long-term membership is looking at what to do now that we did take Number 1. It's time we stepped out of our shells and embraced the rest of Protector. It's time Project Checkmate to join up on the Server events. Well, I can't speak for everybody in PC (maybe I'm suppose to because I'm the Super Leader, but I'd rather they made decisions for themselves), but I'm out there and would love to meet some of you guys. Send a tell to @Sterling Steel if yer ever looking for someone to team with, or maybe you want some info on what's up with Project Checkmate and maybe we can run an event together or something. And we need ACTIVE Coalies! I hate saying hello on Coalie and getting no response. (Feeds the paranoia) Wow, I feel like I'm trying to sell the SG. That's not my intent. Basicly what I'm trying to say is we are out there, we are active, and I want my SG to be more community active. I want to share the fun we have together with the rest of you. I'm rambling now, so that usually means I'm saying too much. So I'll end this post now. Thanks. (Oh, and if my paranoia is true and the Protector Community does hate us, someone please let me know!) edit: Okay, Innocent Wrath just shot past us, we are Number 2. I'm not worried, we'll get it back. We are finding the Prestige Race really exciting!) |
Pardon my previous words. Despite my current feelings on my old home server's current social climate, I had no right insult people so carelessly. That being said, the community of Protector has always been standoffish at best of anyone who didn't quite fit the mold. I can cite numerous cases but I'm sure no one would care.
You pay to play. Having fun is ok. Kill Skuls or kill Crey. Hunt at night or in the day. Black or white or shades of grey. Play it your way. We have no say.

Hi Sterling! Long time no talk. Just wanted to mention that PC was going to the dogs before I left two odd years ago. It was part of the reason I switched to Virtue when I returned. Even still I heard of your valiant efforts in holding the group together despite declining interest in the game and Mark's weird breakdown and some decidedly bad PR. Good job on running the SG, but I had also heard through the grapevine that the group moved to Freedom. Anyhow, nice to see your all still alive, even though Protector seems to have declined into a squalid pit of Cliques and general social retardation. Come to think of it, I should have seen it coming. |

I could comment on the fact that I am being labeled a troll for speaking out on an issue that has bothered me for the last year, but I won't. Despite my obviously barbed words I think the Protector community as a whole needs to change its ways if it ever hopes to attract new players or conversely lure the old ones back.

I'm not a good man, but I'm not going to let this stand.
Silas, I'm going to state something that needs to be said: Protector isn't socially retarded, you are. Your post is 4 months late and inflammatory.

I do miss the server, hence why I search obscure posts mentioning my friends old SG. But the post did touch on an issue that two years after the fact continues to make my blood boil.
