Speedy toon

Hihi Do you guys think that it would be possible to create a speed gimmick toon (not trying to make a Flash or Quicksilver rip off) with powers like Super Speed, Flurry, Hasten and Whirlwind and so on. Is there any possibility that you could make it work?
The character will not have any ranged attacks. Only speed stuf.

Posted

Totally. I'd probably make him a MA/SR scrapper, too. The SR for all the quick dodges and lunges, and the SR for all the bendy kicks and punches. If you really wanted to go crazy, you could slot him/her up with enough +Recharge sets from the IO system that he could have a perma-attack chain and just constantly beat on people.

It could work. Wouldn't be very good, of course, if you focus purely on the Speed pool for your offense and defense.

A Scrapper would be what you'd want, with /Super Reflexes. For the primary, Claws would work (probably the fastest of the melee sets), or one of the sets that leaves trails of effects behind as you swing (Dark Melee, Fiery Melee and, I think, Electrical Melee).

Dark Melee would be great for the gimmick. And Super Reflexes is a great idea too guys I have to go with whirlwind too, though it's not extremely good I need it just for the image.

You know what this just made me realize? I'm thinking really hard but I don't believe I've ever actually seen anybody use whirlwind in-game. In 6 years.

I used to. But then they changed it to Knockback from Knockup.

I use it when soloing with my Emp/Eng Defender. Obviously I have no problems with knockback in that combo - it's the only real mitigation he has. Definitely need Stamina tho, but it's fun to spin in circles and watch the bad guys fly away while you're blasting them. Dual builds helps - I'd get cursed at mightily for using it on a team.

You skip the animations, but I'm pretty sure the activation time remains the same.

Saw a female toon use it yesterday. It was only in one situation though when a foe were glitched into an object and we couldn't attack. The whirlwind kicked the toon out of the object for us

Actually, I have a speed-themed toon. His name is The Golden Jett. He's an elec/SD scrapper. Gold uniform, and full blastbot helmet. The shield I gave him is the elec shield, and I colored all his customizable powers gold as well. Took the vet reward sprint that shoots off gold streaks when you run, gave him hasten and SS too. Pretty neat concept I think.

The thing with that is, there are so many other abilities that do it better, that WW is sitll a waste of a slot, for most characters, unless you get it just for fun and show.

It used to be a cool costume change power, but that was replaced with the emote lol.

Not a FOTM build, but it's soft capped to ranged and and almost capped to melee and AoE your -tohit from any DM single target attack will cap melee against that foe. It's so fast that you can make a complete chain with just Shadow Maul (it recharges before it's done animating). The +recharge proc in whirlwind will give you an occasional boost of recharge.

Add in flurry and sands of mu and and you can throw lots of superspeed punches. But really, you are better off using your superfast DM punches, Smite and Shadow Punch.

I know it used to allow you to ignore animation rooting but that got fixed a while back. About the time they made it KB instead of KU.

Go Dark Melee, take Shadow Maul at level 2, take Flurry at level 6, and if you have the Veteran time (12 months), take Sands of Mu veteran reward.

Three attacks using basically the same animation of a flurry of punches.

In my three years or whatever I've only seen it once, someone just goofing about near the Black Market.

I have Whirlwind on a Brute, just for "teh lulz".

I only use it for a very few things:
1) During Rage crashes, when I'm not going to do any damage anyway and don't care about the KB.
2) To sweep through a room throwing critters around, agggroing them to follow me into the next room.
3) So that (followed by Bile Spray), I can spin around in circles and vomit.

Other than that, useless.

looks very cool Philly. It would be cool to see it live
I'm planning to make a really cheesy gimmicky speed based toon as soon as my dp hits 50

Thanks for all input guys. It really helps out!

One of the first characters I made was a speedster; a DM/Reg Scrapper named Oscillator.

He used to have Whirlwind, and I used it a lot when it was KU. He's long since respec'ed out of it, and I never took Flurry. For a while he had a buzzsaw build that didn't include Shadow Maul, but with the buff to DM I switched him back to a build that fit his concept better. I rarely play him any more, and his principal use is to act as the SG leader for our Reserve.

DM works pretty well for a speed concept with power customization. The main exceptions being Touch of Fear and Midnight Grasp. I think SR, Reg or WP are your best bets for a secondary. I'd lean towards /SR today. I took /Reg because it fit my concept of a time-manipulator and was a much, MUCH better set than /SR at that time (I0 that is). Nowdays they're comparable, and for DM I think /SR is better. It also gives you a leg up on high combat mobility (back then movement didn't suppress and I used SS and Teleport in combat).

It's not exactly what you were asking about, but I have a speed-themed toon that I took in a little different direction.

His name is Plaid, and he's a level 38 kin/arch defender. Yes he wears a kilt

Didn't take whirlwind, but between hasten, super speed, siphon speed, and speed boost for teammates, my goal is to have truly ludicrous amounts of runspeed and +recharge.

That's not possible, since powers don't start recharging until they finish animating.

I was going by the Mids numbers not actual play, but are you sure about that? Just basing it on the power icon it seems to me that it starts recharging as soon as it's activated, but I realize the icon is not necessarily tied to the power to the milisecond.
