Zombie Invasions

Can someone splain me the point of defeating zombies during a zombie invasion? I tried looking it up on the Wiki, and it lists badges but these are only awarded during Halloween events. Not to mention that I've defeated many of them now and gotten nothing. There is no badge listed that I might get, something that always happens with defeat badges the with the first defeat that counts toward the badge. They do not award much in the way of XP of Inf, I looked at the info and they don't drop anything special in the way of salvage.

Am I missing something, or are these Zombie Invasions primarily there to cause me grief?

The defeat badges should be awarding any time there is an invasion - not just during the Halloween event. One of them also awards a costume piece (the pumpkin head).

The main purpose of these event is to gather the player characters in one area so that mass carnage ensues. The problem with this is that for right now, many players do not respond to the call and in fact, avoid the invasions entirely.

Note that you can avoid being affected by an invasion by going to a different zone or into a building, like a store, the train station or an instanced mission. IME, they don't spawn all that fast, so just running straight to your mission should allow you to avoid them if you want, meaning that the only missions affected are the "Hunt X" missions.

Well, lately I've taken to not running from any events, I even try them with my low level toons, but like I said, I'm not seeing anything. Does the badge for defeating a certain number of Zombies not appear the way the others do?

Like I said above, with most "defeat" badges as soon as you defeat the first enemy that counts toward the badge that badge appears in the defeat category with a count listed telling you how many you've done. Is the badge for the zombies special, will it magically be awarded when I hit the right number? Is there something special I need to do, other than defeating a certain number, to get it?

It's under a different tab in the badge menu, under "Events".

You may want to page thru all those tabs, since there are different badges listed different places - then you can see if there are any you want to start working towards, or even if there are some you got you didn't know you had. (Don't laugh, I've missed Badge Award announcements when combat was hot and heavy.)

A low level character by himself will have a very hard time with the Zombie spawns. No dishonor in taking care of your regular business instead of stopping to fight them.

Actually, I've looked in every category, found nothing, so, I'm assuming there is something wrong or that I cannot get the badge for some reason.

As for events in general, I like them and wish more people would show up for them. I used to show up all the time when there was "Supernatural Activity" but I've learned that the only way to win this is two basically have a full team at each of the 4 banners, defeat enough spawn to make the banner vulnerable then defeat these and then all converge on the GM that will appear. I've discovered that the chances of 4 teams getting together for this is pretty slim, so I stopped.

Been trying to get the badges for fighting fires, I go there and try to get everyone into a team so that we can all get the badges that much quicker. 9 times out of 10 everyone that shows up refuses the invite... I relly don't understand. You need to defeat 25 hellions, no problem, but 25 fires on the other hand, by yourself when there are 4 other people fighting fires that means you'll get 1 maybe 2 for each event so you'll need to visit roughly 10 to 15 fires.

Why the general lack of interest in events? Are they that old? don't you want to get the badges for all of your toons? If the events are that old then I imagine the missions are getting pretty stale for these people as well.

The banner event (and lor winter event when running) is just too much hassle for me, even if my computer doesnt crash/lag out. And if you crash at end, you get nothing for all your time with those two.
Anything needing 2+ coordinated teams I pretty much accept I wont be doing, and I think a lot of PUG players feel same.

I still love the Rikti/Zombie invasions and will join in on those.

The zone you are i can be a factor for how many help, atlas is much more likely to assemble to heroes than brickstown.

It might be possible that that a bar doesn't show up for these. The number needed is so small that I usually get them in one event, so I don't recall.

Did it recently on Protector and started with only 6 people (2 people on 2 of the banners and 1 on each of the others). We got the banners to pop with this and more people showed up as it went on. Total of about 16 people (2 teams) by the finish. Though, the call went out on Protector's Jello Shooter channel, so the best of the server came out for that.

Sounds like a problem with your tactics. Once you have the 25 hellions, are you ignoring them and concentrating on the fires? Are you fighting fires on the sides (or roof) where there are no hellions who can heal the fires? The event lasts long enough that you should be able to get at least 4-5 fires easily, more if you have good recharge through Hasten or set bonuses. And once you get the 2nd badge, you'll get the bigger extinguisher which is even more effective (75 damage to fire rather than 45). I just can't see getting only one or two per fire.

For the most part, a badge isn't enough of a reward. Even getting together a team for Giant Monsters can be hard enough, even with the merit reward.

I don't generally bother with zone events unless I'm trying to help someone else. For my own sake, no. Why should I? I don't care about getting the badges, the xp and inf are very poor for the time spent, merit rewards on giant monsters are iffy, a lot of the zone events I find kind of confusing, and most importantly they just lack fun. There's no upside.

The thing about the zombie invasions is, with a decent-sized team, you can usually get all four badges in one go. And once you've done that, there's not much incentive to do any more of them. I do get a kick out of them, though... it's fun just seeing a giant mob of heroes whaling on bad guys, like a George Perez drawing come to life.

The Rikti invasions still seem popular. At least, I usually don't have any trouble finding a team for them.

Also, for the Steel Canyon fires, you can:

A) Team. Thus, each fire defeated by any teammate counts for all teammates

B) Tag it - just hit a fire someone else is working on once, and when they defeat it, you get credit.

The only time that I'll refuse an invitation to a firefighting team is when there are people fighting the fires while I clear out the Hellions, which keeps them from restarting already-extinguished fires, that won't even bother trying to invite me until I start on the fires themselves. If you weren't willing to share credit while I was protecting you from getting a massive explosion to the face, then you won't get any easy credit for the fires that I put out on my own.

Give a man a fire, and he'll stay warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he'll stay warm for a lifetime.

I really don't need the badges on all my characters - I have over 60 running right now.

Some characters are better suited to some events and/or badges than others. I make sure all my ice characters get the Winter Event badges, especially "Cold Warrior". My characters based on 11 1/2 inch fashion dolls all get "Toy Collector". My Fire/Thermal Corruptor Scorching Wrath really, really needed the Supernatural Event badge "A Woman Scorned" due to her backstory.

But some characters have a lot of difficulty getting event badges, as you have discovered. Defenders and Controllers have difficulty with opening presents during the Winter Event, but are great on teams for Rikti or Zombie Invasions. My meleers rarely gather badges that require opening doors or presents at low levels because I hate to chase down the monsters.

So all-in-all, I have one main Hero and one main Villain for badge gathering. The other 60 or so may or may not have them, as the mood takes me. No one character is likely to have all the badges for their faction (let alone having no chance yet to get all those from the opposite faction).

And you will also find threads around discussing the fact that most events have gotten stale for many vets. The vets tend to build new stuff for each seasonal event based on the core from prior years, so those cores are now 4 years old or thereabouts (the first Winter and Halloween Events were pretty different from today's, although the giant monsters were reused).

Generaly, outside of the Halloween event when invasions happen regularly, people aren't prepared to drop what they're doing and try to assemble a team to fight the zombies.

The only time Zombie Invasions are worth hanging around for is when they happen in Dark Astoria - but even then only when you're a Night of the Living Dead fan and hang around Romero Heights.

The problem you're encountering here is the fact that most of the players that wanted the badges got them during the Halloween event.

The regular zombie invasions have 4 tiers of zombies to fight. Minion, LT, Boss, and Elite Boss. If you've been fighting them solo, you've probably only seen minions and LTs. Bosses and Elite Bosses spawn when there are enough people fighting the invasion, just one or two people won't spawn them. The numbers you're looking for here are 100 minions, 33 LTs, 25 Bosses, and 1 EB. As far as I can remember, there is no progress bar for these badges.

A low level character is likely not going to kill 133 zombies in one invasion without a team. The best advice I can offer as far as getting the badges is: Make notes of which characters have fought invasions before, and switch to them when you see an invasion notice pop up in your chat window. It will take a while, but you'll eventually get the badges. Around Halloween, people will come out of the woodwork with characters that have been created since the last event, so it tends to be a lot easier to put teams together for it then.

As is, by now, hopefully known in this game, and forum, I hate the term "toon". Toon is a Steve Jackson Games release, for tabletop roleplaying, not a Character, envisioned and played by me in any MMO. I never played a "toon" in D&D or any other tabletop game, with the exception of "Toon", and I've played pretty much any tabletop RPG you care to mention. Even my forum name on here is named after a tabletop/bluebook character from two seperate, yet coincidal (sp), games.

Regardless, no, I do not want, care, or need to get every badge on every character I make. I have two characters dedicated to badging, one blue and one red, and that's the only two I want every badge I can possibly get on.

I have ideas for certain characters where I desire one title or a certain accolade, but the thought of going through the same things repeatedly to get all the badges for every character I play on CoX is completly mind-numbing.

I'm very much in agreement with you on this, which is why I typically try very hard to refer to them as "Characters" or "Alts" (if I'm feeling a bit lazy).

Back in the day, I also had Toon characters while playing the Steve Jackson game. Since they were part of a friend's Teenage Mutant Ninja Wombats campaign, they generally were characters such as Rocco the Rhino and Polly Possum or other such whimsy. They don't translate very well to this game, so the use of the term "Toon" is somewhat jarring.

To get back to the thread topic:

For Zombie Apocalypse/Rikti Invasion events, I will almost always join in if I happen to be in the zone when the event starts. Even with characters that already have the badges. I find these mass chaos events fun.

Supernatural Activity (ie Banners), I usually skip as it's just too much of a pain to try and coordinate multiple teams with any effectiveness. It seems like either you can't get enough folks together to take things down, or else everyone just does thier own thing and end up wiping out one or two of the banners (and/or the GM) before everyone gets in place, resulting in missed badges/rewards for the event. I will join in if someone else is already setting up the teams as I'm passing through though.

GM's (any) - If I'm in the zone when the call goes out, I'll join in. But I'm not making an effort to travel to a zone just because a GM's there.

Steel Canyon Fires - I normally pass by unless someone is specifically calling for assistance. Being able to use just one, slow-recharging, power is annoying. If I'm on a Storm or Ice powered character I might do a little fire-fighting now and then.

Troll Raves - these I fight whenever I've got someone in level range in the area. Again, mass chaos events are fun

Overall, I base what I do with events on if I'm having fun with them or not. I've got my "badge collector" character that I keep current with every badge possible (although he's still missing a few...MoSTF and such), and I like to get badges on my other characters, but I won't go out of my way just for badges...

I'll keep this in mind. I've just seen the term used a lot on these forums and thought that it was the proper term to use. I really don't much care for it myself to be honest, I was just trying to "be correct".

As far as not getting the badges I can understand, and I guess it could be mind numbing. It's all new to me and nothing seems mind numbing... yet.

I guess my real disappointment is not that people don't show up for the events, I can understand that they are busy with other things or not interested in that particular badge for the hero they are currently playing. I guess my disappointment is when people that do show up refuse when offered a team. I suppose that some of these people have a thing about blind invites, I do myself under most circumstances (and always refuse them immediately), but I will generally except them anyway if I'm at an event, assuming that it is someone else at the same event making the request. I know that there is not always time to send a tell to ask first and it is much easier to simply click on my hero and click "invite to team".

Yep, events are the only time I'll blindly accept a blind invite

I have gotten hit a few times where the blind invite wasn't actually from anyone at the event but it's rare.

Best One:
I jump into the giant pile o Rikti, invite pops up, accept and keep fighting, a few minutes later the team starts yelling at me to hurry up and get over to the Hollows so they can continue farming FrostFire...

I apologize, explaining that I thought it was an event invite, and exit the team.

Whooo Howdy, then the nasty tells start. My ignore list grows a bit at this point...

(I mean REALLY? you're not just sending out blind invites; you're sending out blind invites to a FF FARM? And you get upset, and nasty about it, when folks don't want to?)

It's a small, but significant difference.
