It's is becoming pretty hard these days to come up with a good name for a toon, people seems to have a good name for there toon and then find out it's was taken,we can consume a large amount of time with coming up with a toon name. It's kind of dumb when people want to name a toon something and it's taken and then people find a creative name or something like I don't no lets do one of my toon name for examp.

Green Flame Avenger or Ratz and if these names are taking people get mad or try to find another way to spell that name like.

Green F1ame Avenger

oOoRatzoOo

xXRatzXx

Ratz1

Ratz.

I see alot of this on Freedom and Virtue more then anything and i think the Derv or whatever should revamp the Charactor Generator so Either we can have the option to name a toon
Something we want without getting SORRY that name is taking or even coming up with
a Random Charactor Name Generator whould be a good Idea like most MMO do or Something.
These are just Idea's and i kind like to see something done that give us more freedom to name our toons because it's seems like people are running out of Ideas these days or someone still there favorite toon name and they can't get it on another Server.I really just there was way to come up with a good name for your toon without getting sorry that name is taking.

Never play another NcSoft game, If you feel pride for our game, then it as well, I Superratz am Proud of all of you Coh people, Love, Friendship will last for a lifetime.

Global:@Greenflame Ratz
Main Toons:Super Ratz, Burning B Radical, Green Flame Avenger, Tunnel Ratz, Alex Magnus

cant have same names because if someone sent a tell, then who would it go to if you have the same name as someone else?

if your having issues with a name, move to a less populated server where the name will most likely be available. otherwise do what you said and make a slight alteration (like interchanging l (L) and I, which in game look identical)

I was hoping this was a suggestion to fix the 'Check Name' button in character creator, which has been broken since inclusion. Sadly.

And again...using names so obscure people have no idea what it means, isn't what they're looking for.

And not everyone wants the name "Jimmy Clark" or "So Cool None Compare Man" or "[insert foreign language name here]" or "t3h 31it3" or "GremIin" as their name.

Now, I'm not saying there aren't great names available, I've found them on occaission. That doesn't however mean they fit the concept.

Recent example...virtue server..."NinjaGirl" wasn't taken. I was actually quite suprised. And it's a comicbook sounding name (more golden age/silver age imo...but you get the point)...but the name doesn't work for a concept of a sonic blasting hero who likes to wear bright orange tights.

Yeah, I can see how that wouldn't work. I'm pretty sure Naruto would be taken

I'm pretty certain that within the first week of the game going live there was a thread

out here saying "All the good character names are taken already !!!!".

Well, nearly 6 years later and it still isn't true . . .

Just be a bit more creative.

Are many of the obvious or one-word names taken? Sure.

It has been nearly 6 years after all.

But, with surprisingly little effort many good names can still be acquired.

I'll be honest with you, I find most of those names...suckie. :P

Though a few of them are nice (did you look to see if they're available?). And the one's I thought we're okay were still limited.

Kick Girl (good silver age/golden age sounding name) works for a Martial Arts Scrapper/Stalker. Not much else.

So yes, you're right you put simple words together, doesn't make them good. And even if they are, they might only work with certain sets.

Perhaps the reason you see so many of those ridiculously looking names is because people aren't:

1) Creative
2) Clever
3) Patient

To be honest, I like all my names because they are creative and clever. I would be annoyed to see another fire/nrg blaster named Pyrhiccup (what happens when you eat a hot burrito and burp?), or someone make a character named after my main. I'm fairly well known on Infinity, and I would be quite annoyed to see some upstart redsider roll something else called Sprite Night, when I have had that character for a long time, and that sequence of Sprite characters has been a great way of identifying my characters. (*Grumble at the bluesider that took Sprite Light*)

I do not want to share my name with anyone. I'll also assume that many of the players you will play with will also not want to share their name.

edit: "Obscure Names FTL" Heh, I got a grey dot. I only regret that I can't make them turn red.

6 years and I can count the number of times I didn't get the name I wanted on the first try on one hand.

Ditto. Or is that a 'non-allowable one word answer'? I still have no problem with the naming convention of the game. I also dont see why using a foreign word in one's name is problematic, but that's just me (and most of my Heroes/Villains are part of an extended mythos of my own creation anywho... to each their own). The best creative fun of the game is designing a toon, concept and name that is unique. If someone else has the name; what's the fun there?

I've only ever had two name pro9blems and, tbh, they were obviously going to be taken (but I was chancing it):

Photon Girl and Paradox

Alternative spellings (substituting 'C's for 'K's in 'CK' ending words works quite well, e.g. Warlokk)

Colours can sometimes help too, although the more-obscure colours don't always work, e.g. Yellow Snow (which I have a sinking feeling is quite popular and probably taken on ALL servers, EU AND US )

I always have trouble with names. Some people are just lucky and can name stuff well. Others just don't and I'm one of those. Someone above said all you need is creativity, cleverness and patience; well some might lack one of those so coming to the name portion of the creation process is often the more frustrating part.

The methods I use are:
-Don't be so serious. Most of the times, just a generic-y name or an obscure one you pulled from a name generator doesn't ruin the character's concept. It doesn't need to be a joke name but you also don't need one dripping with symbolism and drama.

-Save. Now we can save power choices and costumes. So you can create a character and come back later when you've thought of a name. Granted, most of the time when I'm making a character I'd rather not put off playing because I can't think of a name...some people only have a certain amount of time allotted to play, afterall.

-Use the real name. Because it's easier to name your character Eli Mason and then use a badge/title to make it super. So Eli Mason the Mongoose or some such isn't so bad and it's easier to change a real name because you can just change the spelling or add a middle name (Ely Masion, Eli S. Mason, etc). However, you have to have a badge/title in mind to really make it sound good.

I still think the devs could add things to give more options in naming. I suggested a one-time-at-creation, self genericizing name that you can change at a later date to give you time to choose a name later. I'll add to that list; put server selection within the creator to get around needing to save then load on another server (so you'd have Server>AT>Costume>Powers>Name).

Actually although those are terms people use, I think what they are really trying to say is that all it takes is a little bit of effort, and not being stubborn and inflexible about what you want.

For example I have a character based on a burning insect. Common sense told me that when I decided to choose his name I wasn't going to get Firefly. So rather than get mad or stubborn about it I decided to think of alternatives. I settled on hitting an online language translator to see what fire looked like in other languages and settled on Feuerfly. Got it first try.
