Super Speed questions
There's probably already been a thread like this but I just wanted to be sure. Is there a possible way for super speed to ever have a wall running ability? I mean it's extremely limited compared to the other travel powers. I don't see what would be so bad about that? It would make it much easier to get around and what not.

There are some limitations however.

The primary one is that you have to be a dev.
I wouldn't mind some limitations if they ever made it live. It's just annoying having to take the long way around just because super speed won't cut it.

here's the development reality. Programming Wall Running, Web Slinging, Grappling Hooks, or Zip Lines into the game would require adding connection points along non-horizontal geometry. Yeah, it could be done, but the entire underlying game world would have to be rebuilt. The process would also require additional processing power and memory storage beyond simple polygon builds. That would drastically change the underlying engines performance envelope, which at HeroCon, the devs are trying to keep.
Why they want to keep that performance envelope is up for debate. Personally, I think NCSoft and Paragon Studios might plan a push to be the first and only commercial MMO available on Android / ChromeOS. I could be wrong.
That's some good info there. I plan on majoring in game design and knowing this stuff would really help lol. I honestly wouldn't want Web slinging. It just makes the game like Champions and I wouldn't want that. It's bad enough I made a spiderman clone on this game already :P. Thanks for the info though.

I've seen some pretty out-there ideas, but I think you just hit the ball out of the atmosphere.

Um... what? O.o
I've seen some pretty out-there ideas, but I think you just hit the ball out of the atmosphere. |
The basic idea is formed on what we do know about the game so far. NCSoft / Paragon Studios contracts Transgaming to handle supporting the game-engine on the *nix platforms. NCSoft / Paragon Studios also is pretty adamant about maintaining the current processing engine and current graphics engine. These engines run perfectly fine on older hardware... or... on newer hardware that's found in the netbook market. We also know that Transgaming has been working with Google to work the 3D programming stack on Android / ChromeOS.
So... if you were a marketing executive at Transgaming... just... how cool would it be if you could convince a couple of game developers whose code other employees are managing... to use their games as demonstrations for a new platform? Can you imagine the jaw-dropping shock that would follow Google trotting out ChromeOS, being asked how it was on games, and then showing City of Heroes, WarHammer Online, or an EA Sports game running atop a Snapdragon or Nvidia Tegra based netbook?
Can you imagine how profitable that would be offering a hard-core game on the platform out of the gate?
Okay, I don't have any proof Transgaming, NCSoft, Paragon Studios, or Google are planning this. I don't think, however, that it's a marketing opportunity that they can really pass up. The netbook market is exploding, and just about every major vendor is now planning systems armed with SnapDragon or Tegra... Since MMO's are already built with the idea that in order to play, you are connected to the web, it would be a catstrophic kick-in-the-nads to any other MMO game developer.
Uh, no.
"One day we all may see each other elsewhere. In Tyria, in Azeroth. We may pass each other and never know it. And that's sad. But if nothing else, we'll still have Rhode Island."
actually, hypothetically, swinging would be possible within the current engine, the devs just have refused to do it because "it would look silly" which, if you've ever played that ...other... superhero MMO you know exactly what they're talking about watching lines go out into the middle of an empty sky just looks wrong.
as for Superspeed and running on walls, the devs have stated that they'd have to re-code every vertical surface in the game to allow running on it.
No

I think you underestimate our fools, sir.
Why /duel is a bad idea
While the idea of wall running would be nice, I would rather devs focus on other things. Also if they made wall running, that would greatly boost the power of superspeed so some comprimises would have to be made either in speed and/or energy usage. I would not want either, as would many, so wall-running would have to be another travel power.
Personally I like the dynamics right now. Flying is simplest, Superspeed is fastest most of the time, Super jump is fastest over uneven terrain, and finally teleport is most flexible. Ninja run is nice for those that just want to get around and no real hurry to get there, and makes a nice upgrade from sprint. (I just will not pay $10 for it).
How about as "a skill to go rapidly go straight up, like jump pack, but recycle faster (but not instantly, just long enough to come crashing down from how long you use it) Enough to get over big jumps, but dangerous to use, like SJ can be.
Running Super Speed and Combat Jumping together can allow you to slide up some surfaces if you jump into them at an angle.

I wonder if it might be possible to (1) give SS a slight jump and movement friction buff and (2) very slightly slant most of the surfaces in the game, and thus achieve a sort of wall-running. Of course, slightly slanting most surfaces in every zone could possibly take a very long time.
Bellen: You could say you're paying $10 for the Jian, instead. ~_^
heh. Pum's picture is priceless... buuut...

I'da thought a Dev woulda had alot more accolades and alot more IO's.....

edit<> double dull pain and others too **** all those doubling up of powers are way better then set bonuses
Hi
Staright up i know exactly 0% about the workings of game engines etc... here are my thoughts
My favorite super power has always been super speed (flash fan) and my 1st ever CoH toon was a MA/SR scrapper (with capped run speed ofc )
I have never ever wanted the ability to run on walls ... 1 because (yes super powers arnt real but show some respect to the laws of physics people!) and 2 because it would make the travel powers extremley unbalanced with super speed pulling way out in the lead in popularity and usfullness ....
I 'DO' however think the ability to run on water with super speed should be implicated into the game. Is it possible without the massive overhaul formentioned? It certainly seems alot more feesable than wall running ... also the lack of waves in the game would make sense to also...
How would i like to see it work?
1. an option under graphics to enable/disable super speed run on water
2. if you stop running you sink ... and would have to jump back out of the water whilst swimming to run again
what are your thoughts people? sorry for the poorly worded rank littered with spelling mistakes and gramatical errors but this is the one thing i would love to see implemented the most into the game!!!
Peace

IIRC Devs have responded to running on water before with the explanation that it would require a complete re-write of how water is handled.
To get Super Speed running on water, it would first have to be turned into a movement mode (like fly, walk and Ninja Run) so it could play different animations.
