Befriending an 'enemy'

Hi all, newish player here. Couldn't find the answer to this question after a bit of searching, and sorry if this has been answered somewhere. Anyhoo...

So I was playing really late, near maintenance time on Freedom last night and noticed a character in Pocket D. Then when I clicked on her info, I found that she actually had something written in her description! I thought, wow, RP exists on Freedom? Awesome. I'll add this character to server. But wait--I can't. She's an 'enemy' (she was a Brute, I was playing CoH). The game window tells me that I am not able to befriend an enemy. In these days, with so many cooperative zones, how come we can't befriend characters who are in the same game?

I have heard that this is a player setting and there is an option to adjust it. If that's true, my question is, where is this setting? And will adjusting it also allow me to give gifts (inspirations) to my CoV teammates during co-op missions?

I tried logging out and then quickly back into my Villain, but then I realized I couldn't just "search" for that character by name, and then I had no idea how to add them without finding their avatar in the game. I also didn't want to add global because folks are a bit more hesitant with adding those (including myself). As a second question, is there a way around this?

Much obliged

To the best of my knowledge, you cannot "friend" (use the /friend command) on a cross-faction character. You should be able to find out their global handle by using /get_global_name which will return a name prefaced with an @ symbol. (So, for example, @Example_Man)

You should then be able to use /gfriend @Example_Man to add them to your Global Friends list. That, unfortunately, is the only way to know when they're on, to the best of my knowledge.

Not for befriending. The closest you can do is make them global friends.

Nope. You can't 'friend' someone from the other side or trade with them - not even when you're on the same team.

As usual, Ironblade is correct. Just to clarify a bit, though, the inability to trade between factions extends to ALL parts of the game (i.e., the markets, co-op zones/TFs/SFs/events, etc.) and cannot be overridden or gotten around. (I add this tiny point because the OP specifically asked.)

Probably the only way you can do this is by making up a stalkerish type bind... by using getlocalname on their global...if it shows up with the toon name you wanted to friend, then they are probably online on that particular toon.

Would be kinda creepy if you ask me though...I've had my fair share of times where someone has seemed to 'find' me whenever I logged in.

A less effective way and less stalkerish is to add a note and some stars and then if you pass by them on a different character you can say "hey I met you while you were on so-and-so".

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

I almost wonder if the reason for it is so that you couldn't have an easy way to target them if you pvp'd them.

My theory doesn't explain WB tho.

Hey everyone, thank you for the replies. You sure cleared this up for me.

@Golden Girl, thanks!

I am a bit choked that I can't pass someone a wakie during those crucial coop mission moments. I guess having a revive ally power is the only way. Thanks!

Well, there may be relief for this situation in the future -- Posi made some encouraging comments in regard to being able to trade inspirations between heroes and villains, so it's something they will hopefully address (I really find it hard to believe anyone considers insp trading seriously exploitable in any significant way).

You could search for the character name and go about trying to find them. But, you can friend them with just the character name (with the restrictions already stated) by using /friend <character name>.

Just a tidbit, I thought I would throw out there.

I really doubt that anyone thinks trading/gifting inspirations between factions is exploitable.

If I had to guess though, I'd say that the whole trading/gifting code is of one piece and can't distinguish between any tradable object (enhancements, receipes, salvage, influence, inspirations, etc) which is why we can't trade just inspirations [yet, hopefully].

If it was turned on for one object, it would have to be turned on for all of them type thing...

I dunno, but the way Posi reacted (IIRC) was like, "Wait...didn't we already fix that?" It didn't sound like it was some kind of insurmountable code or labor-intensive thing. At least that's the feeling I came away with. /shrug

Either way, it would be nice to be able to exchange inspirations during co-op events.

No, it's definitely not all-or-nothing. It's just a question of how much work it is. It might be more work for them to pick and choose what can be traded. Or it might not be. It might be easy.

Addendum: "Cannot be ...gotten around anymore." There was a circumstance for a long time where Hero/Villain bases that had coalitioned in the very early days of COV could "drop" inspirations, enhancements and salvage items on the corresponding bins for the opposing side. This permitted item migration across factions. That particular loophole was closed a while ago, however.

OP: You can try sending that player name an in-game email (from COV-side) to get their attention, if you didn't get their global already (in which case, "/tell @GLOBAL, message" is the easiest way to reach them). For people who catch my eye, I regularly set a "player note" flag on them, starring them for easy viewing later on.

Let's say I was you. I'd have clicked on their name in local chat, chose "Add Player Note", put X stars on them (I have my own system: 1 star for a jerk, 5 for a friend, 3 for noteworthy stranger, and 2/4... hey, I'm not using those.. hrm..), and drop in a personal comment like "great bio, must RP later". That ties to the person's GLOBAL account, so if they're on a different toon, I'll be able to find them later on. Best of all, if I have "player ratings enabled", I can pick them out easily in a crowd.

Unless, of course, there's a crowd of friends hanging around. In which case, it's gotta be a RWZ raid on Freedom.

Good luck in your bio stalking! If you need anything on Freedom, look me up here, the Freedom board, or by /tell @Turgenev. Cheers, and happy new year.

Well, since the OP is living in the here and now, I thought my answer was more than complete enough.

If you make a /getglobalname macro you should name the button "CREEP"...

Because it is a little creepy to have people not on your global seemingly knowing your every login.

I haven't seen it mentioned, but as far as I know, Global Friend has to be mutual - when you /gfriend someone, it sends them a popup informing them that you would like to be a Global Friend and gives them a chance to confirm/deny. If they click no, then you can't add them to your list either. Likewise, if someone deletes your name from their list of Global friends, it deletes their name from your list. So it's usually polite to ask first.

Some people will /gfriend anyone that they like, some people reserve it for people that they've met repeatedly and get along with. Personally, I have about five people on mine, of which maybe three are active players. (The other two have most likely quit for good, but I don't see a reason to delete their names just yet.)

Yep. But it's the closest thing to being able to friend someone who is opposite faction. Stars won't work unless you are in the same zone, which only means that you will be able to see your 'friend' when they are in a cross faction zone.
