Server maint yesterday and Server maint today?

Hi,

so we had a down period yesterday for server maintenance and now again today!

Is it being naive to expect a bit of joined up thinking and planning from those guys in suits that are responsible for having the game up and online?

I have no problems with the offline times due to technical failures/routine maintenance or even bad programming that subsequently requires patching!

But two long down times in 24 hours is not the way a commercial company should operate.

Even if it meant one extended downtime that would be better than two disrupted days.

The game seems very quiet recently and any new player might just think why bother.

Maybe you noticed the issues with Justice, Virtue and Guardian that has led to the event being extended a week ?

Yesterday was the NA cluster only. (per the announcement including details like waring the EU folks that the market etc would be down)

Today is NA+EU.

Planned downtime beats having servers crash on folks

(Oh and by the way the servers are back up - well before the scheduled time)

Also, the "guys in suits" probably want the game to be stable over the holiday weekend, when many of them might not be there to fix any issues that come up. So, downtime now saves Christmas game-playing.

Yes, yes, how dare they take measures to correct and/or prevent problems, etc., etc. Also, nicely couched "teh game is dying" aside.

I'd rather have them push downtime (with a schedule) NOW, while not a lot of people are on, than have it CRASH for an indeterminate amount of time in the middle of my gameplay (possibly boning a TF or timed mission).

No. But it's naive to think that they can fix KNOWN SERVER CRASH ISSUES without maintenance downtime.

Then why start a thread whining about it? Seriously!

This is ignorance talking. Sorry if that offends you, but you don't know what you're talking about.

If you have known crash issues in a running product, and you have a fix for it, you don't sit back and wait to apply the fix until it's convenient for you. You patch NOW. The customers will be unhappy that there's downtime right now, but they'll be even MORE ticked off if the product crashes and nobody's at the helm over a holiday.

And if that "extended downtime" was a server crash tonight or tomorrow when nobody's here to bring the machines back up? Whoopsie!

I have no idea how things work in the United Kingdom, but here in the USA this holiday season is about spending time with your family and friends, exchanging gifts, having big family meals, throwing festive parties, caroling, ice skating, snowball fights, doing whatever they do down south where they don't get snow, helping out those less fortunate, and not locking yourself in a dark room playing video games.

Really?

Looks up from the game and around his darkened apartment...

Wow...

Are you being naive in thinking that they don't have a better idea than you as to what's necessary to keep the game running properly? Aside from the fact that they do this for a living, I think it's safe to say that no one knows more about the behind-the-scene stuff for this particular game.

Are you seriously suggesting that two different departments made their own plans to take down the servers without telling anyone else?

Oh dear, not a lot of joined up thinking here then!

Quite rightly, they took down the servers yesterday to fix whatever they had to, but what they also should have done was bring forward the routine downtime for today, so doing two jobs in one period! And if that meant a slightly extended downtime to do so then fair enough.

That would have been joined up thinking and given them an extra 24 hours of live time to confirm that all was well before the holiday started.

No need to shut up shop twice when once will do makes commercial sense.

Have a Happy Holiday.

You don't really understand the difficulties in what you are suggesting, do you? They likely couldn't do both "at once" and the regular downtime is set to clear things out at regular intervals so that the game runs well.

In this case "commercial sense" completely ignores technical requirements. If anything happened they would be charged a lot for overtime (over a holiday no less). Far better financially to do what they did.

It's always funny to try to guess from posts who has some computer technical knowledge, familiarity and/or experience and who's just whinging out their butts. i have none of the above, i'm like an idiot savant without the savant portion, but i support Snow Globe's statement.

Once again, you demonstrate your lack of knowledge of the subject at hand.

The servers must be shut down for maintenance due to 'wear and tear on the data' (fragmentation, memory leaks, file corruption, etc). More activity = more of these problems. Therefore, the correct COMMERCIAL AND TECHNICAL decision would be to go ahead with the maintenance on Thursday morning since there will likely be heavy usage over the following few days.

If they had to do maintenance on Wednesday for an unrelated matter, that does not change the valid commercial and technical reasons for having maintenance on Thursday.

I'm not familiar with the term "joined thinking". Will I find it in the thesaurus under 'clueless'?

Awww...

You couldn't play your game for a couple of hours...

How sad.

Seriously. People never cease to amaze me at how much they can spout off their entitlement laden dribble.

This is not the phone or electric company. Not an ICU unit at the hospital. It's a computer game. No life threating service involved. Sometimes things are more complicated than you might think...Oh wait, I doubt there is much in the way of thinking involved in the OP beyond "WAAAAHHHH! I can't play so the company and all the people who work on it must suck."

Yeah, that's right, I went there. Take your entitlement and your $15/month elsewhere. The overall uptime on this game has always rocked, regardless of your perception of it.

Um, Forbin_Project?

Santa taking a dump down someone's chimney doesn't really equate to the Christmas spirit. (I mean your forum avatar.)

But carry on! It isn't my chimney. I don't have one.

I'll be celebrating the holidays collecting candy canes. Have fun with your, uh, hobby.

And what if the crashes weren't a single problem, but multiple ones, of which not all were fixed (or fixable) before the last patch?

Nobody's talking about "commercial" sense here. Only technical. This has escaped you.

My point was that a lot of people will have other plans during the holidays, and will work gaming in to fit their RL schedules.

Do you have any idea how expensive coal has gotten these days? With the rising costs of heating fuel during this recession, poor Santa can no longer afford to leave it in lieu of presents for those who have managed to make their way onto his naughty list because coal is now seen as a reward rather than a punishment. So this season Santa has taken to eating a lot of Taco Bell burrito's and will be leaving another type of lump in the stockings of the bad boys and girls.

I could let you know my CompTIA A+ Certification ID if you want to check. Or provide transcripts for either of my diploma's (programming & systems analysis and web development & design).

On the other hand none of that would matter one bit for the discussion at hand other than to say that I have a very broad general computer knowledge and familiarity. Experience in the specifics of this case I likely don't have a lot (I haven't developed a MMO. I also have not had to support a MMO's hardware or software).

Nope. Because at that point you'd have just submitted to an internet winkie-sizing contest. You've already lost.

Nobody's hammering this guy for not being happy with the downtime in the middle of his play schedule. Yeah, it sucks AND blows. THAT we understand.

But the silly "well they shoulda done it THIS-A-WAY" and the descent into "The game is dying!" /em thumbsuck. was just irritating.

Nope, I was just letting Schismatrix know that he didn't have to guess at my credentials. I'm pretty open about my experience.

No guessing was required, and i agree that even just general computer knowledge, as you mentioned, would be enough to realize how off-base the OP's statements were. 'Twas just a bit of fun and whimsy, mostly at my own expense.

Me, i'm far too ignorant of such matters, any and all matters, to make such statements myself. Except when i do, i guess.
