Pyro's Custom Built Rig

Oath - saying 10 would be nice doesn't preclude CR from saying "but this rig is better than nice, it's fantastic!". In fact that would be just like him

Snow Globe - since you know and thus aren't guessing your disqualified since CR specifically asked for guesses, not facts. So there!

Surprisingly Snow Globe is wrong about the allocation and location of the ports but did indeed guess correctly that there are 15 total. Now I see why there is a page of "conditions" on any contests people run as I never thought what if someone was half right haha. I did say correct guess of the total so that being the case SnowGlobe you sir have a free sketch coming your way.

Hahaha Caemgen is on to my ruse (and yeah I feel this rig is far beyond "nice" but then I am biased ). Since Pyro said he "lost count" I thought well darn he just eliminated all the small numbers (no one would be guessing 3 for example) so I figured I would hint that the high numbers were out as well and so it would go back to being a level guessing field.

As for SnowGlobe providing facts rather than a guess I didn't forbid that (and really how could you stop people from counting them up) he was actually wrong about how many were located where (but he still arrived at the correct total) so it was more of a guess than he knew.
My one ace in the hole was going to be that if someone did indeed look through the thread and add what was on the mobo's backplate with the case usb and the card reader they would still be off because when I switched out the silver one for the black it went from having 1 on the front to having 3... I thought that would keep people guessing for a bit lol.

Total is indeed 15 (don't think you will run out of USB anytime soon Pyro... I dare you to use em all! )
10 on the back (8 of which are USB2.0 and 2 of which are USB 3.0)
2 on the top of the case
3 on the new media readers front.

Thanks to all who guessed. Who knows I may do more of these quick contests for free art when I get more time.

P.S. Sent ya a PM Globe.

Here are a few pics I took a few days back.

This is a shot in total darkness of what the light from the blue LED's looks like spilling
through the hexagonal mesh and across my white keyboard and optical trackball.

And this is a shot of the sheathed PSU wires being routed so as to avoid blocking the bottom air intake.

Yep, I miscounted the backplate and the ports on the motherboard itself. After I sent you that PM, I found some really large pictures of that motherboard, and figured I was off (and out of the running).

Top down.

Back plate.

Mostly I did just that: I read through the thread, looked at the pictures Pyro posted, and counted ports on the pictures. You had also mentioned in one post that there were at least 12.

The media reader was the unknown factor for me. I don't think I've mentioned this but I became an A+ Certified Technician about 12 years ago. The eSATA ports confused me in the smaller picture that Pyro posted, and I couldn't see the internal USB ports clearly. Once I found those pictures above, I knew everything except the media reader.

I've sent you my reference shot(s) image.

Thanks for the contest, and allowing me to set a goal I need to find work that much faster now that I've finished my web design diploma.

As much fun as your anticipation is I will let you off the hook a wee bit and say you can relax for today.

There actually is no tracking number or I would've sent it to you already, just a delivery confirmation that you must sign for and heavy duty insurance, but you can start peeking Wednesday eve through till Thursday.

I was not happy with what UPS and FedEX wanted for shipping this time around ($250 to get it there by Christmas??? Really FedEX??? No wonder Britney dumped you ) so I went USPS.

Should have seen the postmasters face when I told him how much I wanted to insure the first box for hahahah.
He was trying to guess what it could possibly be, ..."is it rare or precious metals?"
and I was like "...well it is very rare (unique in fact)... and precious... and made of metal."

P.S. Yes there are two boxes as the sheer volume of pure WIN being sent your way could not be contained in just one without breaking several local laws, an international zoning code and the Geneva Convention

Oh and just an FYI the case itself is wrapped in plastic to avoid any scratches and then spaced from the boxes exterior by 1.5 in styrofoam packing and a 2 inch air gap.
The other box for the more "sensitive" items they are double boxed (wrapped in two layers of bubblewrap, then a box then surrounded by shipping peanuts, then another box).

Hint: According to my pre-shipping calculations the 2nd box weighs 14.6 lbs. ...I wonder what weighs that much???

The tower's box weighs in a 39.4 lbs (lift with your legs not your back lol).

So, basically, you ensured he won't get it by Xmas by making the postmaster think it was some kind of bomb. Nice!

Well he did ask whether it was explosive, flammable, toxic or contained liquid... hey look on the bright side... you can bet your a$$ they won't drop the packages.

...or go over any potholes, or even breath too heavy in it's vicinity hahaha.

P.S. I should've rigged the case speaker to play Jingle Bombs at random intervals.

Stuff your new custom rig can do...

Eyefinity is ATI's name for their new technology that spreads games out over multiple monitors.

Many videocards can do this for two monitors but it leaves you with a seam running through the
middle of your game which kinda sucks. Three screens however would work great, now if only
there were a way to have a triple monitor display running off a single card...

or even six??? >o.0<

This could be the dumb question... but what is the bonus to using six monitors, when you can just use one giant one? Like I do.

Six ordinary monitors might be equal to one giant one, but if you use 6 giant monitors...

Why run 6... because you can and other people cannot haha!

They don't all have to be doing the same thing as I understand it 3 can be running your game while another runs stats and your chat client (vent skype etc) while another is watching an episode of Firefly while another is downloading torrents. Granted you might get distracted and miss stuff happening in game but it sure would make waiting at the mission door (since I am usually first one there) for people to show up or a pug team to form a lot more bearable.

I'm sure there are other uses but I've not actually tried it (though I do have 6 monitors in my gaming room
none of them have display ports and none of my videocards is DX11 compliant like Pyro's).
I hear what you are saying though OE I generally run two at a time myself the huge 30'' one has the game running and one of the other 20'' has everything else.

P.S. one other thing occurs to me about multi-monitor over one big one, you can see it in the above pics, is the ability to rotate the 1st and 3rd inward like those
wrap around mirrors you see in stores so that it fills more of your peripheral vision, I'm thinking it would be that much more "immersive" when everything you can see
without turning your head is the game.

I want a monitor that does nothing but play Firefly!

Posted

Lol I have something close to that now... my "media pc" has a Firefly boot screen (seriously I made it custom myself) instead of the WindowsXP loader, a Firefly desktop, Firefly screensaver and quicklinks to every episode (and the movie Serenity and bonus tracks on the DVD special edition) on the desktop so Firefly goodness is just a click away... It even plays a custom audio clip that I pieced together from the theme song when I turn it on and the bit "have no place I can be since I found Serenity, but you can't take the Sky from meeeee" when I shut it down.

And if you think that is over the top... I also replaced most of the windows sounds with Firefly quotes too, if the system ever has a critical fail (program crashes) River says... " Also, I can kill you with my brain" hehe.

Yeah you could say I'm a browncoat.

Actually, I just thought of another use...

6 Wacom Cintiqs

One for tools.
One for closeup work
Other four for various zoom levels, combined for a large image, a couple of movies for splicing, several tutorials while working on a piece, several web pages, or showing finished results of any the above.

Edit: Or just 2 Cintiqs and four 32" displays.

So would I. Oh well, I can dream.

I was introduced to this idea from Bert Monroy's Pixel Perfect 100th episode (about 5 minutes in):
