sound when receiving tells

I looked under the options menu but didn't see anything there, so here I am, asking...

Is there a way to have a sound play when receiving a tell or a SG chat message?

Tells already have sound, but there isn't something for SG - probably because some SGs are so busy it would be going off constantly

I'm guessing you mean other than the default chime?
Not that I know of.

If your not hearing anything when you recieve a tell... Well, thats odd and might be a bug.

A long time ago the "tell chime" stopped sounding for tells received, and only sounds when you send one.

I'd bugged it many, many times. It's never been fixed.

This is the first I'm hearing about a bug with that, and I had the chiming work for me just last night. I suspect that if there were widespread we'd have heard about it from more people by now, so there may be an issue with your sound settings or drivers. I'd suggest opening a thread in the Tech Forum to see if any of our more tech savy players can help you with this. Please post the results of CoH Helper in your first post, it should tell them what they need to know about your drivers and settings to take a look. I would also suggest filing a support ticket, rather than a bug report, with NCSoft so that they can also take a look at the issue with you individually.

Same here. It's always worked for me.. I hear it all the time when I'm on the forums with my laptop and it draws my attention back to the other computer to respond to the person.

Actually, there were even times I could swear i heard it, and turned my head to look at the other screen, but I didn't have any messages. I guess I have "Phantom Ring" syndrome. lol

Phantom Ring: Term used to describe when someone thinks they hear their cell-phone ringing or feel it vibrating in their pocket when it's actually not.

I've had that happen before.. felt it vibrate, and when I went to check my phone, it wasn't even in my pocket! lol

Because it's not broken. The problem is clearly at your end since no one else is having this problem. That's an odd one. Maybe the game uses different sound files for tells sent and tells received and one is corrupted?

In over 5 years I've never experienced this. You may want to check things out on your end.

Also, if you can't hear it, you can set up a separate tab just for tells. If you have a separate tab, the text of the tab will turn white whenever a new tell comes in and stay that way until you click the tab.

You can do this with any different channel - events, SGs, etc.

It's always worked for me (5 yrs).
I hear the "ding" with incoming and outgoing tells.
Even if I'm on a different tab, I'll hear the ding and know that someone has sent me a tell and I'll switch over to the tab I have set for private messages.
And yes, the letters on the tab itself will turn white to show an incoming message is waiting to be viewed.

Same topic; Different question (I'm at work now, can't check it myself):

Is it possible to adjust the Volume of the Tell ding independent of the other sound FX Volume?

Sometimes I miss Tells during fights, with lots of different power sound effects going off.

FYI I wear headphones when I play.

Not without file swapping. You would need to insert a file into /data that has a higher base volume.

Just make a separate tab only for "Private messages" and check on it from time to time, you won't have to scroll through everything to find what you want.
I not only had my sound card die on me, but I too listen to music (with headphones) as I play CoX
