Voices of the NPCs
I think Avery Brooks would do well as the Woodsman.
Eh, I don't tend to read text in "voices," for the simple fact that I don't tend to think in voices, more so in concepts, and I read text how I think.
That said, after some deliberation, I'd assume Lord Recluse would sound like Street Fighter's M. Bison because he wants to, you guessed it: take over the workd. Of course!
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Nemesis's Japanese voice would be Norio Wakamoto
And randomly, anyone who could be played by Yuri Lowenthal? |
As far as Yuri Lowenthal goes, Foreshadow--remember him?--is the obvious choice. I wouldn't mind seeing him branch out from the "young fighter" role, though. I'm sure he's got the chops for it. Unfortunately, Yuri's characters tend to be a shade younger than most of our core CoX characters (Johnny Bosch falls into the same gap). Maybe Malaise, if he could do a French accent.

Excise most of Simon Templeman's British accent, and you've got a good Manticore. Someone upthread mentioned Jennifer Hale, but she can already do almost anything; that's a bit of a cop-out. That having been said, I'd love to hear her read Ghost Widow's dialog, too. Debi Mae West could make a good Indigo.
Oh, and Tara Strong and Steven Blum--like Jennifer Hale--could do half the darn cast.

I always hear Keith David as the voice of Dark Watcher. And possibly BABs. And a good percentage of the strong male characters of the game. I dunno, maybe it's the amount of voice work the man has done, or perhaps just because his voice is awesome.
I also always thought Tony Jay to be an awesome Lord Nemesis. Maybe it's from all those years watching ReBoot, but he's like the ultimate mastermind voice.
And Fusionette always sounds like Joey Lauren Adams to me.

Actually, I'd have had Vizzini voicing Vernon von Grun. "Laugh with me! Nyahahahahahahaha-" *thud*
BTW, had a fun conversation with our esteemed Dr. Aeon the other day - when I asked him who he thought should voice Aeon, his remark was "Dr. Aeon sounds like Antonio Banderas... at least, that's what HE thinks he sounds like." Michelle aka Samuraiko/Dark_Respite |
Some more:
Marshall Brass = Samuel L. Jackson. I can just hear him yelling "I've had it with these mother******* Goldbrickers on this mother******* island!"
Willy Wheeler = Vince, the Shamwow guy
Penelope Yin = Kuki Sanban AKA Numbuh 3.
Mr. Bocor = Fat Tony
Efficiency Expert Pither = Montgomery Burns
"Now... Face the mighty Bison!" Seriously, though, with the clip that plays on the Grandville speakers, I'd go with Fred Tatasciore, if budget weren't a concern.

Manticore always struck me as more of a Christian Bale's Batman. Maybe I haven't read enough comic books about him, but the character strikes me as the typical brooding, angsty "woe is me" dark knight who just doesn't benefit from Simon's authoritative voice. And, call me crazy, but after seeing his performance as Dr. Doom in one of the Fantastic Four series, I'd definitely stick Simon Tempelman as Nemesis. The accent would add to the character and the way he can speak with both utter superior contempt and authority at the same time is just invaluable
Someone upthread mentioned Jennifer Hale, but she can already do almost anything; that's a bit of a cop-out. |
On that note, though, I'm reminded of Hynden Walch who did Starfire for Teen Titans. More importantly, she did Velina in Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! which I think demonstrates the breadth of her talent. Somewhere between Velina and Starfire would be the perfect combination for Ghost Widow, I should think.

Since I'm the one reading the text, I usually hear the characters in my own voice. However, I think I can fairly say that I am a voice "talent" with TWO distinct vocalizations in my considerable arsenal:
Dumb Guy - my normal speaking voice slowed down slightly and with the appropriate look of confusion on my face.
Foreign Guy - my accented voice that always sounds the same regardless of the imitated's gender or national origin.
Yeah, I'm a regular Mel Blanc.

I was actually making fun of the character, since he is the personification of everything that's wrong with City of Villains' settings and storyline. I WANT to take the guy seriously, because he does have some dastardly plans afoot, but seeing how CoV was designed to make a point, rather than be a believable world, I just can't help but see him as the ultimate expression the Dork Age of comic books pretty much defining an entire game.

Here's one: Liam O'Brien as Diviner Maros. Less Gaara, more Radar Man, though. It only occurred to me when I thought about it, but that's the voice I hear every time I read Maros' text: slightly unhinged, slightly raspy. Maros would be more controlled than Radar Man, though.

That's exactly why I think it might be a good idea to give Recluse a deep, monsterous tone, like Fred Tatasciore's ("The Beasts" from MGS4, for instance). Might go a step toward redeeming Recluse.
|
Oddly enough, your description of Bale is exactly how I see Simon Templeman. I was thinking more "snarky," though, less "I am Kain, emporer of all I see." |
I finally thought of my Ghost Widow. How about Laura Bailey (Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist)? Quiet, cold, and always just on the verge of actually--God forbid--emoting. I still wouldn't mind hearing Jennifer Hale take a crack at it, though. I like to hear my favorite VAs branching out. |
I'm sure Jennifer Hale could do a good job of it, as well, but again, that's cheating. She has done self-controlled dramatic roles in Iron Man's Spider Woman and Bastilla San from Knights of the Old Republic, and she has done extroverts in a few games, including Mercenaries 2. Her portrayal of Black Cat/Felicia Hardy in the 90s Fox cartoon Spider-Man is very much on the ball for what she'd need to do here.
But again, that's cheating. It's like getting Tom Kenny or Charles Addler to play... Practically anyone you pick

For some reason, I can really hear Fairuza Balk, (in full meltdown mode during The Craft), doing justice to Silver Mantis.
It's sort of turned into a "What voice would you like to hear do these characters if there were voice-overs" thing. That's ok, too. Aion has some /very/ familiar voice actors in the US version.
I'm a Shelley Calene-Black fan. I think she'd do more justice to someone like Sister Psyche than anybody else I could think of.
And Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's voice has some strange quality that just keeps me entranced. I'd listen to her read the phone book, truth be told. And she's got a good depth that make her a general fit just about anywhere. She does creepy very, very well. (See Pisha, a hidden quest giver in Vampire: The Masquerade -- Bloodlines. Creepy.) She's what I've heard for Ghost Widow since her character was publicized prior to City of Villains...
Christy Carlson Romano as Mynx. Or maybe Ms. Liberty/Dominatrix. Though I didn't get into Kim Possible until the last couple of years, that same energy and accent/diction fits all three characters, and it's hard to miss it.
For that matter, Nicole Sullivan's work as Shego in Kim Possible really makes her voice stand out a lot when I'm reading some of the dialogue, though usually more incidental stuff.
Chris Patton... He's got this talent for voicing snarky and throwing in impromptu comments that end up in the finished piece. His voice is usually what I hear in my head for Faultline.
Steve Blum, though, I'd drop him into Manticore in a heartbeat. Playing to Blum's strengths there. Dark, but not as dark as Kevin Conroy can be in a *cough* similar role. And capable of really good comedic timing during a mostly serious situation (cf. "The Big O".)
I've definitely heard George Newbern's voice when anything Statesman oriented pops up.
Dr. Aeon always sounds like Vizzini from the Princess Bride.

Here's my picks:
Nemesis: Patrick Stewart
Fusionette: Tress Macneil or Kath Soucie
Becky the Tarantula Mistress: Moon Unit Zappa (like, duh?)
Penelope Yin: Christine Cavanaugh (I hear her sounding like Gosalyn from Darkwing Duck)
Dr. Forrester: Trace Beaulieu (Can we get another DUH here?)
Professor Topfer (hero Invention Tutorial): Chistopher Lloyd of course
Thunderhead Bartlett: Lloyd Bridges (sounds like Commander Cain, the old War Daggit from the Living Legend episode of Battlestar Galactica)
James Bright (villain Invention Tutorial): R. Lee Ermey
Captain Castillo: Whoever voiced Robin Hood in Disney's animated feature
Nearly any Freak: "The Dude, You're Getting a Dime Bag...er...Getting a Dell" guy.
Mender Tesseract: The lady doing the presentation in this commercial:

*** EDIT ***
One more I meant to post but forgot:
Dimitri Krylov: Yakov Smirnoff.
For some reason, I always hear City Slickers-era Billy Crystal when I read Synapse.
Also:
Cate Blanchette as Ghost Widow
Owen Wilson as Manticore
Carrie Fisher as War Witch
John Glover as Dr. Aeon
Bruce Campbell as Vernon Von Grun
Global name: @k26dp
Actually, I'd have had Vizzini voicing Vernon von Grun. "Laugh with me! Nyahahahahahahaha-" *thud*

Skipping back to Castillo, he actually reads/sounds more like...Oh, who the hell has a starched, WWI British Pilot accent?
"I say! You there! Yes, you, chap! What's this on your jetpack? That, chap, is dirt. Dirt! Unacceptable! You will spend two hours cleaning it. And you can polish my pack while your at it. And if you so much as scratch it then I'll have your guts for garters!"
/mince off
Hmn....still can't think of any voices for canon characters >_<
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Governments have fallen to the power of social media. Gaming companies can too.
Kathleen Turner for Sister Psyche, for me. (her acting voice, not her native Aussie accent.) It's hard to find someone with that "90-year-old woman in a considerably younger body" feel for me.
The late Sydney Greenstreet as Westin Phipps.
I have more... somewhere.
Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.
So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
If the NPCs were ever to actually be voiced, I wouldn't care who did what as long as some of the female characters were voiced by Jennifer Hale.
I always heard Synapse as Steve Blum (using his Mugen/Spike Spiegel voice)
Silver Mantis: Eliza Dushku (in Faith from Buffy/Angel character mode)
BaBs: Michael Clark Duncan
Citadel: Christopher Sabat (he voiced Gunslinger in the English dub of Trinity Blood)
Manticore: Troy Baker (Abel Nightroad, also in Trinity Blood, in "serious Abel" mode)
Blue Steel: Bruce Willis
Cap'n Mako: Michael Wincott
Scirocco: Oded Fehr
Nemesis: Malcom MacDowell
Statesman: Kurt Russell
Foreshadow: Kirk Thornton (voiced Jin in Samurai Champloo's English dub)
Faultline: Brendan Fraser
Sister Psyche: Kate Beckinsale
Numina: Anjelica Huston

Most of the voices here have been covered, so I'll handle a more unusual one:
Lord of War: Hro'Dtohz - Whoever voiced the Taiidan Emperor in Homeworld, with appropriate voice effects and Rikti speech syntax. Sample here. You'll know the voice I'm talking about when you hear it.
For me I always hear Johnny Olson the old announcer for the Price Is Right for TV
The Resistance has boobs too, and better hair!
