Just for fun

Today I just felt like poking a bit of fun about CoX. Don't get me wrong I love the game, I just see a few things I think are a wee bit strange and/or funny.

I would be fighting a horde of zombies/rikti in front of Positron and Valkyrie and wonder why they don't jump in to help. Don't they care that one of the city's heroes is being eaten, blasted to oblivion? - "Positron! Help me!" *Positron stares blankly from his pedestal down the street as I take my final breath*

As we are trying to take down a Rikti bomb a citizen walks by it. The bomb goes off and more than half of the heroes fighting it get taken out by the blast. The citizen continues his walk as if nothing happened. - If the citizens cannot be harmed in any way, why do they need defending??

Oh well, I figure we heroes still need to help protect the city's infrastructure and buildings for these indestructable citizens right? I watch as a rikti assault ship rains bombs down on the city covering both streets and buildings alike. In its aftermath...not a pane of glass is broken. These rikti must be dropping fireworks or something, but then one hits me and I go flying for a loop.

So I figure we heroes are here in this indestructible city with it's immortal citizens for their amusement or entertainment. Cool!

Welcome to the big time! Nobody said heroing was easy!

I'll admit there are plenty of moments when you just have to suspend disbelief in the game. Actually, considering it's a superhero MMO, I think you agree to suspend disbelief in the Terms and Conditions.

Oh, one more thing that'll freak you out. You know those bus stops that you always get caught up in when you're running somewhere heroically? Well, where are the buses man? Where are the buses??

How many times do I have to say it?

City of Heroes is SERIOUS BUSINESS people! You are a hero saving people's LIVES. Or you are a villain trying to spread destruction and evil.

There is nothing to make fun of here. There is nothing amusing about this game.

Now, either take your responsibilities seriously or turn in your cape.

It's that simple.

My mind wanders so often you've probably seen its picture on milk cartons. - Me... the first person version of the third person Steelclaw

I think what would be cool is if the "major" heroes were actually wandering the zone they're supposed to be in and randomly helping people out... It'd be pretty sweet to have to "find" Positron wandering the zone to start the TF... Of course for the "make everything easy for me" crowd there'd be a major outcry, but I think it would add to the immersion.

Here are the responses from the signature heroes during a Rikti invasion:

Ms. Liberty: "I'm not fighting Rikti until I can DRAW this damn sword."
Back Alley Brawler: "Sorry, but I stepped off this podium once and then couldn't find my way back to it. Not taking that chance again."
Blue Steel: "They're no challenge. I sneeze and dropships fall out of the sky."
Positron: "All that crap cons grey to me, no XP."
Valkyrie: "What are the Rikti gonna do, kill me? Been there, done that."
Synapse: "Uh, no. Not even with the hospital that close."
Mynx: "Hey, I'm just as capable of fighting Rikti as any of the other- OH LOOK, BUTTERFLIES!"
Citadel: "They're not Council."
Luminary: "I'm not fighting a damn thing til someone figures out my actual gender."
Sister Psyche: "Oh, please, the Rikti don't even invade Independence Port. Why else would I be here? It's not to look at Statesman, that's for sure."
Aurora Borealis: "My husband won't let me."
Statesman: "Sorry, too busy fighting Recluse."
Manticore: "I was distracted, what were you saying?"
Swan: "The Rikti would one-shot me in this outfit."
Numina: "I'm a ghost, what could they possibly do to me?"
Infernal: "I imprisoned my own demon mother inside my axe. Anything after that is rather anticlimactic."
Castle: "Oh, sure. Right. Fight Rikti. No one listens to a damn thing I say, and you want me to fight Rikti. I don't think so."

Is the BAB quote a reference to when he turned the trainer off on in the test sever to do a walkabout and then couldn't target it to undo the command?

maybe not walk all over the city, but close to their current location should be fine. That happens frequently in other MMOs. The contact walks around a city square, that sort of thing.

Yes. However, that was before the giant monster code. Since the enemies in question (zombie/rikti invasions as CyberionLeader mentions) now con to each players level, this statement no longer applies. I would like to hear his excuse now.

Or just add a map icon for TF/Trial contacts even when you aren't on the TF. It would be a nice QoL improvement even if they aren't running all over the place. I've pretty much learnt where they all are now but when I was new finding them was really annoying.

The idea of the signature heroes occaisionally moving off their pedestals to fight crime/slay zombies/defend earth is a good one. They could have map markers to show their current location as mentioned. Also, at their original position could be holographic stand-ins of them which still dole out the TF's for anybody who didn't notice/can't be bothered. I'd spend money on developing this, it adds an extra layer of depth and realism. It's naturally just a QoL level improvement really, but if fleshed out with some severe AI and the ability to 'team-up' with the signature heroes (and villains redside of course) it would almost qualify as a feature.
