Mission Architect: Player Awards 2009! Nominations

Since I think the current Mission Architect Awards don't go far enough, I would like to organize our own Mission Architect Awards for 2009. Thanks to those offering their help already. The total prize money will be around 200 million inf split evenly between the categories which amounts to about 25 million for each winner, transferred to the character of your choice. If you would like to contribute awards, or to help judge (to narrow down submissions for final voting) let me know.

Rules:

  1. You may nominate one arc for each category.
  2. You may not nominate your own arcs.
  3. This thread will be open for nominations until October 14th
  4. If an arc gets a second nomination, that will guarantee its spot in the finals for voting.
  5. The level ranges for the first three categories are general guidelines and can allow for a little fudging.
  6. Best European arc is for anyone in the European servers, including foreign language arcs. *note* Currently, I have no way of giving any inf on the European servers. If you are on the European servers and want to help out, it would be greatly appreciated.
  7. After the nominations are over, the judges will play through the arcs that only recieved one nom and narrow those down to 3-5 arcs for final voting by the public in a new thread in this forum. This thread will be up no later than October 26th and will stay open for voting until November 9th.

Best Mid Level Arc – Old Dog, New Trick (81318) @Wrong Bird

I had a very, very, very tough time picking many of these and especially the Best Comedy as I have played many deserving. Honestly, most Categories were hard since I had several choices.

Bubba, do multiple nominations for the same arc make a difference? For example, Wrong Number actually nominated a couple of the arcs I was going to nominate. So, should I go ahead and sumbit the same nominees or either submit a different nominee or nothing for those categories?

BTW, superb idea, and yet another reason why I'm really growing quite fond of the folks that play in this partictular MA forum - even Venture.

Best Comedy arc: The Invasion of the Bikini Clad Samurai Vampiresses from Outer Space #61013

Serious is pretty much just non-comedy. I thought it was broader than "Drama".

I don't play anywhere enough AE to vote but I think you're missing at least one categaroy... Best Custom Group (or something of the sort.)

Even taken outside the storylines, some custom mobs really stick out more than others, be it for design, descriptions, or how effectively built.

Fantastic Idea, Bubba!

And woo! I've been nominated!

I'm up against CoW, I see! Yikes, that's some impressive competition, there!

I'll put my nominations in when the servers are back up, I need to check level ranges etc.

The rules state that you can't nominate your own arcs.

I'll probably nominate some more later when I've had a chance to check my records for level ranges and such, but for now:

  • "Aeon's Nemesis" (#161865) for Best Comedic Arc; funny, but serious enough to not overplay its joke, and probably the best Nemesis plot in the game
  • "Teen Phalanx Forever!" (#67335) for Best Mid-Level Arc; fudges the level range a bit but this is the best fit for it

I would suggest dropping the cut-off point between Low-level and mid-level to 20. That's where the game seems to make the distinction between "lowbie" and "you're not a lowbie anymore." A lot of standard enemy groups either cap out or start at 20.

And what about authors who play on NA servers but reside outside North America, making them ineligible for the official awards? I'm assuming that is the point of adding this category. How do you know which arcs qualify? The only way to be sure is to send a comment to the author, which only identifies authors on EU servers.

Bubba, you know, I've been coming back and forth to this thread and I think I've come to a conclusion... I may abstain from nominating. I've come to realize that I just really haven't had time to run nearly enough arcs to qualify as a fair judge. Beside QPQ and just a few others, I simply haven't had time. There are so many arcs I've seen reviewed that I want to play - that I feel should be played - that I just don't feel qualified.

I'm going to see what time permits before the 14th before I make a final decision. I think I owe it to everyone to try. Unfortunately, I only have so many free minutes in a day.

I'm guessing the process for voting is loosely determined at the moment, depending on how many arcs are nominated, and maybe other factors.

If a category has 2 nominations, you might aim to have every voter play both before voting. If there's 5 nominations (especially for multi-arc) then perhaps a different approach is needed. I'd like to see people replay arcs, since arcs evolve a lot over time.

That's just my perspective though. My MO means I generally see arcs in their early development. So I'd want to replay before voting, and I cannot possibly complete all of the categories this way. That's assuming I'm eligible to vote - I wish Bubbawheat all the best coming up with a suitable strategy for the competition

I chose 25 since that's the level that SOs start. I feel like it's more of a loose guideline.

As far as how the rest of this will go will largely depend on how many nominations there are.

If an arc gets multiple nominations, it will pretty much guarantee it's place in the final voting. All the single nominations will get split up to be played between the judges (currently myself and Eva Destruction has also volunteered) to narrow it down to 3-5 finalists for the voting which will be in another thread. So, Dalghryn - it doesn't hurt to nominate an arc that you don't see, and I'd like to see as many arcs get a chance as possible.

European Arc is intended for those on the European servers as well as foreign language arcs. If you know someone is on the European servers, you can nominate them here. If you don't know, you can nominate them anyway in another category. I'm still working out how to get prize support on the Euro servers though.

Also, I tried to avoid using the same categories as the official contest, which is why I didn't list custom group as a category.

Thanks for the discussions as well, I will clarify things a bit more in the OP.

Is it too late to suggest two new categories?

I was thinking 'Best use of mechanics' and 'Best writing'.

I've played some arcs where the chaining and triggers and spawn point and map selection really stand out even if the story itself doesn't , and likewise, some arcs with ho hum objectives or even badly designed missions use have really good text and dialogue, nonetheless.

Ok, there are 2 that I want to nominate. They are both multi part arcs, but they can fall into different categories too.

So can I do this?

Best serious arc: Turg Fiction: Ghost in the Machine, Act I
Arc ID: 1013 by @Turgenev

Best multi part arc: The Audition Arc ID 221240 by @MrCaptainMan

I suggest that we split up the best lowbie arc category into.

Training levels 1-11
DO levels 12-22

It makes a huge difference if someone uses enhancements or not.
Arcs that start at level 1 should be considered training arcs and be judged by low level unenhanced characters of say level 6. While DO level arcs could be tested by someone in their pre Stamina say 14-16.

Best comedy arc:
ID: 115174.
Author: Igor Blimey
Title: Verner von Grun's Extraordinary Extradimensional Excursions

Best Mid Level:
ID: 1444
Author: Days
Title: Twisted Tongue

Best lowbie Arc (training level)
ID: 6017
Author: Tangler
Title: Mercytown, the one with the fish

Wow this was very hard to do. After lots of thought here is what I have:

Best Lowbie Arc - PUG Hell ARC ID: 7415 Author: @Beach Lifeguard (I had no lowbie favorite and this plays well at low levels so I put it here - most likely belongs in comedy but I had several other choices there)

Best Mid Level Arc – Teen Phalanx Forever! ARC ID: 67335 Author: @PW

Best High Level Arc - The Most Important Thing ARC ID: 266877 Author: @Aisynia (NOTE: This should go in best Serious Category but this arc and the one I chose there both really had an impact on me and I could not leave either un-nominated)

Best Comedy Arc – In Poor Taste 259920 Author: @Wrong Number (Could also fit best short arc)

Best Serious Arc – Tales of Croatoa: A Rose By Any Other Name ARC ID: 178774 Author: @Silvers1

Best Short Arc - Captain Dynamic, the Great, Faces The Great Face ARC ID: 190069 Author: @Aehaed (could also go in comedy)

Best Multi-Part Arc The Audition Parts I and II (221240 and 221241) @MRCaptainMan

There are 2 other arcs I cannot leave out and they are:

- MacGuffin Delivery Service ARC ID: 1567 Author: @Lazarus (This arc was so well written - it fits either in comedy or best mid level arc - I really thought about putting this as my choice for mid-level since PW's arc is so popular - I hope you will consider this arc as well)

- Tailor Made ARC ID: 258291 Author: @anachrodragon (This arc was really funny and could go in comedy or best short - I had so many choices for comedy it was almost impossible to choose)
