MA Authors! Check out your chance for greatness!
Interesting.
And I *really* wish they'd stop twitting and use the official announcements and such first.
I saw this too. I'm waiting for some kind of official announcement on the company site with details...e.g. whether or not you must be present to win, how many submissions are allowed, submission guidelines, etc.

My #1 question is, if you aren't attending HeroCon, are you eligible?
My arcs are constantly shifting, just search for GadgetDon for the latest.
The world beware! I've started a blog

So they tell MMORPG.com and Twitter it before they post it on their official website? Marvellous.

The Audition, Arc ID 221240 (6 mish, complex mech, comedy)
Storming Citadel, Arc ID 379488 (lowbie, 1mish, 10-min timed)
I wonder if this means they're actually going to update the Devs Choice list.

Nice, now if only my custom groups would spawn the right levels so I could consider submitting one of my arcs.

Just patiently waiting for the official submission guidelines. If I had to guess, I don't think attendance at HeroCon will be a gate to qualification - I think they're just going to announce the winners there in a formal fashion.
Looks like the announcement and the rules/conditions have been posted on the site today, but the Double XP announcement covered it up. Good thing I scrolled down! Here's the link to the announcement...
http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/new...itect_awa.html
And to the rules and conditions...

Quite a few things we need to provide on top of the arc ID and the category we want to submit to. Looks like we can submit more than one of our arcs, but only one arc per category. Good luck, everyone!
EDIT: Doesn't look like attending Hero-Con is a requirement. You'll probably just find out earlier whether you won or not. The results will still be posted on the site.

What?! Only for U.S residents?! *Storms off, muttering about the EU Authors*
How interesting. However, I do agree that this shouldn't be limited to just the US side.

It probably has to do with various contest legality issues (Since they're giving out actual physical prizes to the winners). Notice all the bits about "Excluding such and such states", most likely those are also locations where you aren't allowed to run that sort of contest.

Come back when it is the world championship.
I give this event a big thumb down here because a lot of good authors will not be able to compete and there is no non US championship organized to compensate.
From my understanding from their Commercials contest a year or so ago, the number one problem is the prize legality of different countries. Rules for contests in the US can still vary (there are certain states that are more wonky than others when it comes to what you can win) - add other nations into the mix and it becomes chaos.
I agree, though, it's unfortunately bogus for the EU crowd.
Thanks, Mekkanos, for posting the boards links!

I understand the reasons why it's limited to USA residents, and IIRC it is to do with legal reasons connected to the awarding of physical prizes etc.
That said, it blows massive chunks that they have called it the First Annual MA Awards as though it IS inclusive of everyone who can use the MA, and it sucks giant sized that I and a large proportion of their paying customer base is locked outside in the rain for this.

I don't care about the physical prizes. I just want the glory. Surely there is no law governing glory? Couldn't we have some kind of similar contest without physical prizes?

I think that these awards are basically a good marketing tool for HeroCon, and it's a bit ironically unfortunate that they have the parallel dearth of DC awards ingame.
However, looking positively at them, even though a large part of the customer base won't get a look in, a larger part of the customerbase DOES have the opportunity here to gain well-deserved recognition for their work, and for that I'm in support of them overall. Better some of us get a shiny than none of us, eh?
I therefore urge my American cousins who have written great MArcs to enter this competition. The GFX card is moot.
But think of the GLORY!

I'm at work at the moment, so I don't really have time to read the fine print. I'm assuming I'll be entering mine, but it is sad that it's only applicable for us U.S. residents.
I hope this is a sign that they're going to give MA a little more attention, particularly in the realm of Dev's Choice Awards. As noted elsewhere, there is a lot of incredible work out there, and it would be particularly nice if the developers put some work into acknowledging good arcs without forcing creators to jump through the hoops noted in the fine print of this contest.

why? Well, take a look at what it says at the top:

Even worse, they ARE selling the product in Europe - as in, it's officially supported. It's beyond idiotic that they're not willing to look at the European directives and adjust the conditions to them too.

You know, I bet that if it were possible to allow EU players to participate without breaking the national debt they'd do it. Maybe I'm just a Pollyanna, but it makes no sense not to unless it's cost prohibitive from a legal perspective to deal with the dozens (hundreds?) of different government regulations.
My question is, have they answered the question about whether or not you can submit the same arc for different categories? I read where it says you can just submit one arc per category, but I didn't see if they limited it to one submission per arc.

I'm in complete agreement that offering physical prizes isn't worth the hassle of jumping through legal hoops, and certainly not worth excluding a large portion of the playerbase.
Do they really think that anyone serious enough about their arc to actually have a chance of winning wouldn't enter if there was no physical prize? How did they miss an entire forum, not to mention countless signatures, of people promoting their arcs? Did they really think nobody would enter for the recognition alone?
