Ok! hello fellow scrappers. To be quite honest, i am in LOVE with scrappers. Ive tryed other AT's only to take a couple faceplants then trade the concept an costume for a scrapper counterpart! (elec or fire blasters have been changed to elec or fire scrappers ;p)

But anyways, to the point. Ive tryed every type of scrapper primary to atleast 14, EXCEPT for one! Spines. Now i hear spines is actually pretty awsome, an has alot of AoE potential. The problem is i am VERY concept oriented and i just can not happen to come up with a good costume an concept for a spines scrapper.

Now with issue 16 the options have been opened up a little bit, but i am still at a loss. Does anyone have some suggestions, or creative tips, to make a spines scrapper i can love and stick with! thx

Take a look at the slate and metal thorn options. Those two kick the door open for a wide range of concepts.

Depending on the uniform and color, they can be made to look like you are wearing an armor with them attached instead of them looking like they are comming out of you. So many choices from that concept alone. This could take hours without a base idea.

Your going to want to take WP for all the recovery and its an easy secondary to play.

I've made a magic origin spines scrapper who gained her powers as a side effect of fighting off a demonic possession. But a lot of concepts work, though admittedly, the odder ones work best:

* Body modification fetish (e.g., Silver Mantis)
* Queen of Toxins - demonic origin, something akin to what you'd find in the Spawn comic book world
* Mutant - character is born with a mostly non visible endoskeleton that is only triggered in times of stress; mutation also provides healing from the rupture the endoskeleton causes (or toughness)
* Cybernetic enhancements - sort of like the body modification origin but with a more tech spin. Perhaps the character is a Freakshow villain gone hero.
* Transformation - character is a hulk like creature which uses spine and poison attacks once transformed
* Alien - spine weapons are a natural part of the species in which the character belongs

as far as concepts for Spines... look at certain ones like Spike or Marrow or (lol) Porcupine Pete, even ones like Spawn and the liquid metal Terminator (T1000) ... but really it's all in your immagination and figureing out what you want to excell in,

if you want massive AoE you can look into DA(massive heal, stealth, and mitigateing auras), FA(end recovery, another damage booster, flameing blockades, the pheonix force), or ElA(speed, massive end tools, energy god mode) all have damage auras, ...

inactive survival is WP specialty but it offers very little to fall back on(no self heal, and only a mediocore tier9 boost), ...

Regen excells at active survival and has the easyest start and argueably the best for PvP, ...

Inv is one of the hardest to take down (covering everything cept psi) and can hit the hp cap just as easy as regen can, ...

and SR will be able to avoid most attacks outright (but is fairly tight and late blooming and lacks a self heal)

and SD isn't an option yet

I'm the same way: Got to have a concept and decent costume in-line or else I can't enjoy it.

There are a number of ways to use Spines

Mutation: Born with an extreme amount of calcium growing your bones faster than anyone thought possible, or you contracted a terminal illness and you somehow got cured, but your spines were a side effect

Science: Experiment gone wrong / Test Subject and overgrown bones/thorns/slate spines were a side effect. This is what I used for my Spines stalker, a spy who went through an experiment to make him 20x more effective, and now he gets a weapon better than any gun can provide!

Magic: It's magic, anything can be explained with it. Gem, Hex, self cast spell (from your secondary set) or even a favorite of mine, coloring your spines say red and saying they are fire / lava spikes

Technology: Really works best with Metal Thorns (at least to me) can explain it as your suits weaponry.

Natural: Alien from a planet who have this ability. Natural is hard to explain with anything other than alien to me if it's anything other than Martial Arts, Super Strength, or the Swords and Devices and Traps. You know, something any ordinary Joe can get a hold of.

Costumes will depend on what kind of origin, however going no cape regardless I think looks the best, the spines impale your cape and make it seem as if it should be falling off, esp. if you get Quills...

Just my 2cents, hope it helps with your creative block.

I find the new spines a lot easier to build around, have a character now that's pretty wicked, using red thorns and dark red regen powers, it looks like the characters run off blood. What makes it better is that in the heat of battle with dull pain/instant healing running the red aura gets thicker and thicker.

So plant types are in now, my blood demon worked out incredibly well.

My main is a Spines/SR with metal spines. My concept for him is that he's a genetic experiment gone wrong, the scientists were trying to create a soldier with an exoskeleton, but instead of plating his skin, the bones just stick out. He's pre-i16, so I had to come up with some reason for his spines to all of a sudden be metal, long story short, he saved a scientist working on creating a techno-organism who offered to plate his skeleton as payment.

How about a magic amulet stolen from the COT and, when pursuit got too hot, ditched in a tropical fishtank where it was swallowed by a sea urchin?

I started out with an idea based on a thorny devil and ended up with this .

Not a great in game picture and the thorny devil picture I worked off was a somewhat different colour.

You can make a good looking Stegosaurus with the slate spines and lizard/reptile pieces. The name was even available on my home server, as was "Stegosaur."

My spines/regen is Sea Anenome and he looks great! Used the crown horns and large shoulder spikes to really make him look sea creature-y

I saw a very nice-looking Spines/Dark with a plant concept, with green Dark Armor. You could go with Mutation, Magic or Science origin for that one.

The metal spines would also work on a power-armored character, with the spines being a part of the armor, and maybe Invul or Electric or even WP as a secondary.

You're the guy who snaked that one out from under me -- the moment I saw the slate spines I went to check that name on Guardian!

Well, he's still level 1 and I have no idea when I'll get to him - I have 3 new scrappers "ahead" of him at the moment. Unless you've settled on something else, I don't mind giving the name up to a good home.

I'll buzz you the next time I see Soul Sister at Went's and see if you want to do the delete-and-grab. (I actually starred you this morning because I like Soul Sister so much and I wanted to notice any other characters you have.)

No, by all means keep it, you have it fair and square. I will no doubt come up with a good one by the time I decide what secondary to pair with it.

My spines/electric is mutation origin; the electric armor powers are his mutant abilities.

The spines are part of his costume, which is a genetically-engineered symbiant (like Venom). It feeds off the electrical fields of his body to produce the spines (and for its own sustenance).

I use the crystal spines, and have matched them very nicely with the costume colors. They really look like they're extruded by the costume itself, rather than protruding through the costume from underneath.

OK, here is the black-on-white costume:

And here is the white-on-black version:

Both costumes use blue/red electrical FX and a green electric body aura.

I rolled a spines/DA a couple of weeks before i16 was released. His concept is that he was once a normal human being, but he was taken into a world of darkness and corruption where he struggled to survive for years. Now back in our world, he has control over a small portion of the corruption while still holding on to his sanity. His spines are part of the symbiotic corruption covering his body. I'm very happy with his concept, and I've had many compliments on his costume

Having said that, he's not the easiest scrapper ever. He relies on his huge AoE damage, therefore to get the most out of him, I have to be one of the first to jump into a group, usually after the tank. But he's the squishiest scrapper I've ever seen. The long animation times are a big problem when I'm frantically bashing dark regeneration, and more often than not, it's too late. He's unstoppable when teamed with a sonic defender though
