Why can't I name my pet Arthur?

Okay, so I have this bots MM and I really want to name one of my bots: Arthur. As long as I play MM's I never was able to name one Arthur.

And I want to know why this name is added to the list of invalid names. Is it a name that is offensive to someone? Or what?

3 pointer from Zombie Man, all net!

"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"

"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."

I'm going to go out on a limb and say maybe Arthur.

Edit add: That link was the first link when I did a Google search on Arthur.

That breeze you are feeling is the point of Zombie's post going over your head. Wether or not you recognize the character in the picture is not relevant. Other people do. Primarily the ones that own the copyright/trademark.

You are right. However, in the context of a comic hero game, any use of the name Arthur runs the risk of seeming to reference other comic Arthurs. In this case, most likely, the pictured Arthur you do not recognize (from a long line of children's books and a TV cartoon) or Tick's sidekick. The latter probably runs the higher risk as its directly a hero reference, but the one you don't recognize is the far larger franchise.

It is the context of the association that matters. And CoH treads carefully after the Marvel dispute of yore.

sorry.

Thanks, yes that actually makes sense. It's still utter ridiculous in my opinion but okay, I understand the reason behind it.

The only reference I had in mind was the Arthur in my avatar, and only by name(as that Arthur is an AI. My assault bot...is A without the I.

Make him a cockney Assult Bot and call him Arfur

You can give your other bots nice cockney names too (try Googling Eastenders for some. I recommend RIKKY and Bianca) and give them binds filled with cockney slang and the worst, cheesest lines from Guy Richie films (don't forget "Oi, $target, you slaaaag, fancy a bit of a kickin").

Cockney Rhyming Robot Squad mooooove out. You slaaaags.

Isn't the robot sidekick in Edmond Hamilton's Captain Future franchise named Craig or Graig?

Only thing close to that I saw on IMDB was Grag.

When the game refused to allow me to promote one of my first-rank ninjas named Saddam to a second rank minion bearing the same name, because the name had been apparently banned in the interim, I ended up calling that character Saddam. with a period. This would appear to be enough to get around it.

Since Arthur is an ordinary name (for that matter, so is Saddam) and it's unlikely that a ninja, thug, mercenary, zombie, or robot can be made to look like the PBS character, you are doing no wrong by evading this.

Trademark, not copyright. Different beast of the same herd.

Actually, it IS wrong, as purposefully circumnavigating any of the filters is considered grounds for disciplinary action up to and including permanent account banning.

Well, in the mean time I got the official word, and the name Arthur is indeed banned because of copyright issues.

While I understand NCSofts vision on this and don't blame them for enforcing it, I think it's utter bull that someone. copyrights, trademarks, whatever legal term you want, a common name. A character yes I can understand. But a name?

Nothing I can do about that but still.

It really has nothing to do with NCSofts vision. This game was sued by Marvel when it was still owned by Cryptic. In those lawsuits it doesn't matter if CoH wins, because they still end up paying tens of thousands of dollars defending themselves. NCSofts bank accounts aren't limitless so they're going to make an effort to enforce copyright/trademarks.

You can name your char Arthur in CO. Just sayin. Think they will be sued over that? Scary.

I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

This isn't the time or place to start listing all the bad ideas Cryptic has decided to implement in CO. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
