Where does CoX goes from here?
I demand more unique Trials! CoV is in need of some crazy stuff Trial-wise. Maybe revamp the current trials more? Would love an issue that was content/Trial geared.
Game engine could use an upgrade, graphics too, giant monster fights should be more epic and EVERYTHING should be a mayhem (as stressful as this would be on the current game system, thats why we need an updated game system). War Walls should be gone and they could figure out some way to load the stuff without the annoying load screens. Base maker upgrade which also introduces the custom map maker for AE, perhaps even custom event maker for AE. User generated costumes could be interesting. Another Epic AT or maybe just more for our 50s to do.
And of course, more interesting content and more places to go to. Oh, and renameable controller/dom pets.
Just my thoughts.
"Hey, anyone know where this game goes?"
*pause*
"It goes up."

CoH/V even has an enemy of that size and threat level in its lore already - Rularuu the Ravager - we just need him added as a raid target somewhere.
Going Rogue will cover me for a year or more. Add in Staff Melee and that's another year.
I'm quite easy to please. |
from here, cox is goin' straight to the wall.
Its so obvious that it feels like its meant to be. |
And if you're not enjoying the journey just get off the train and take a different one - don't wish for a train crash just to spite everyone who is enjoying the journey.
What CoH is missing:
1. Hunting Rats (and a hierarchy of various quadrupeds for their pelts for crafting better armor or base couches and throw rugs).
2. See #1, we really need more rats.

So I made a quick arc to test this out. Freaks vs Warriors. Cleared the map an started 24 battles with Freaks versus Warriors. Freaks won, but I think the first side in a battle may have better numbers. It seemed like it was 3 versus 2 on the solo level 25 map, so I'll have to try again with Warriors in the first enemy position.

New powersets -- twin pistols/gun-fu, staff melee, chain/whip melee.....
New costume customization -- left/right parts, multiple colors per piece (beyond 2 when applicable), power emanation points....
New Zones -- many already specified: moon, atlantis, rikti homeword, hell, more alternate dimensions, underwater....
Mission Architect 2.0 -- mission layout using placeables, like the base editor, scripting and branching
PvP -- base raids and items of powers revisited. Perhaps offline supergroup members defend the base as npcs.....
A few Zone revamps -- give Perez Park some lover (i street sweep for nostalgia and arcane drops...)

More work on the costume editor. Make the old/original pieces higher resolution (like the difference between the original head wings and the Valkyrie head wings), and for cabbage's sake, add the ability to have asymmetric costumes/patterns.

I was talking recently with a friend about the more elderly content, particularly heroside content, the writing of which treats certain things that are now somewhat old hat as if it were new news (who are these strange soldiers with their antiquated uniforms and bizarre weaponry? could it be *gasp* Nemesis?). I understand that MMO writing is to some extent under the same restrictions as long-running serial comics - every issue is somebody's first - but it seems a little strange to go into the RWZ at 35, where certain facts about the Rikti and Nemesis are fairly well disseminated, and then step out to have a chat with Maxwell Christopher about the possibility that Nemesis might, just might still be active, oh and have you heard the terrible secret of the Rikti?
This got me thinking about Ouroboros. Ouroboros is supposed to be a time travel device, but we only use it to access "past" missions that are still available in the "present". Combine the two threads of thought, and an idea sprang to mind.
Obviously the devs do not want to scrap all the existing heroside content, and of course neither would the players like having it disappear - there are badges in them thar missions, after all, to say nothing of the old content that is actually good, or at least beloved by some. But what if all the antiquated content were shunted off into Ouroboros, and replaced by newer content more savvy to the issues of the present day? It'd provide an outlet to add tons of new content created with the lessons of the past 16 issues in mind, as well as advance some of the dangling plotlines and address unresolved questions to please the continuity buffs. If well introduced, the new missions would still be a good introduction to the setting for a new player - just the setting as it is now, rather than as it was when the game was released.
In fact, if the devs were extremely ambitious, they could create a continuously advancing story by refreshing the available missions periodically and shunting the prior versions into the mists of time - still accessible through Ouroboros, of course. Your character's path through the game could meander through time as well as space.
It'd require a great deal of backend work, I suspect - much more than the current version of Ouroboros, if I am correct in my guess as to how it works. But it would be one solution for expanding and revamping existing content without feeling a need to preserve antiquated content in the "live world" on the one hand, or flushing previous work on the other.

Why MA ratings should be changed from stars to "like" or "dislike"
A better algorithm for ordering MA arcs
I think like a few posters in this thread, I am feeling a bit of the desire to be a bit more '2009'.
Now, I know people want the game to be playable on their older machines and such, but there are things visually that can be improved upon a lot. A great majority of the costume options are low-res in detail and texture; it's interesting to note that for example the high-res shiny cyborg parts are updated and detailed versions of a lot of the tech parts. A pass over these to bring them closer to the standards of the later costume sets and Boosters are now. On that, it must surely be time to upgrade the character models as well. I've heard a lot about how time-consuming and difficult it might be, but the bodies are decidedly blocky (not to mention the mitten hands and feet) and aren't '2009'. For good or bad, gamers are coming to expect more detailed character models and I think that's something a little overdue for this game. I would say the same for faces, but that's a double edged sword. Facial expressions are hard enough in full CGI movies; even though there's some advances of this technology in some games (LotRo and a bit in Champions, though it looks awkward at best), I don't see it being a big thing as of yet. Game engine wise, this also needs to follow through. Again, for good or bad, people are seeing physics based stuff crop up in MMO's (Champions' limited interaction with physical objects comes to mind here immediately) and for me personally, I look at Mayhem/Safeguard missions and think that technology should and could be expanded into the larger world. Not everywhere on every street corner, mind you...but available in some way to make the world more...well....smashy. So that our fights using all these powes have some lasting/temporary effect on the world around us. And isn't that a staple of comic book superheroism/villainy? Again I agree with a lot of people that zones need a good going over and revamping, and I would say this needs to start from the ground up. Whilst the tutorial is spot on with 'what you need to know' moments on both sides, it could be made to be a bit more involved and invigorating. Busting out of a prison or stopping an outbreak of disease are fine, but give it a little more than just one mission. Like Champions, City of could do a lot to set up storylines from the beginning and give players things to look forward to. And for heroes, let's have reasons to start in Galaxy or Atlas rather than just being two starting zones. And on redside, the choice of NOT working with Arachnos needs to be more dilenated and have meaning instead of having subsequent storylines dovetail back into Arachnos. A secondary faction or something allowing villains to be true villains and not lackeys is needed here. Perhaps Going Rogue will allow this? And lastly, story story story! The Coming Storm! Rularuu! Ouroboros! Cimerora! All of these things and more have unresolved/ongoing/untouched stories attached to them and deserve more than they have now. By extension this of course should mean more and new maps and environments; that's not just a wish of this player, but it's a logical extension of the game world to reach out and be broader in scope. We -almost- have this with areas like Cimerora and more dramatically in the Shadow Shard (which is practically crying out for more areas to explore within it), but the obvious things like underwater/outer space/other continents/cities (again superhero staples) are there to be had. Respectively and I think mentioned before, we have the Rikti homeworld, the Coralax region, and in Going Rogue, Praetoria (city or more, we don't know). It's time the story moved forward; I'm fully appreciative of all that's being done for improvements in gameplay, customisation and Quality of Life features, it makes CoH that much more of a joy to log into. I'll admit to being a little spoiled here; I'm also playing Lord of the Rings Online and one of the things that keeps me playing is knowing that the story is moving (however slowly) towards the War of the Ring and seeing places I've read and seen of. I want that here too, that sense that the story is going ahead. That's pretty much my two influence (though adjusted for the markets these days it'd be about 200,000....) S. |
I could see it now, the Ultimate Level 50 Task Force: The Quest for Rularuu! An unknown new benefactor has sent Villains to seek special objects (I refuse to say jems) that would reform all the aspects of Rularuu, while heroes would have to try to prevent it. If the Villains win, they get cheated out of a promise of power and must join forces with Heroes to defeat Rularuu himself, but if Heroes win, they prevent the reformation of Rularuu, but must now join forces with villains to stop all the aspects of Rularuu and ultimatley the unknown benefactor.

All of these are good ideas. I would like to see female stance that is different from men's.
Hecto Mundo. I have this scrapper idea... when I get more character slots...
Seriously? Um. It would be easier to describe places were they can NOT go. Like, time of Alexander. We've already done the back to Rome thing; time travel in that regards might feel too familiar. Smack-a-Hitler. We are fighting Reichsman and the Natzi cronies... so time-travel to the forties/thirties would be... a stretch. However, time-travel to the forties to fight Al Capone/Marconi/Hitler and a switch over to the Time of Alexander to make sure the Incarnate origin survives until Roman times... we COULD have a TF that is all about a Temporal Cold War.
So... any idea is actually open, if packaged right.
Me? I want to know who is writing us letters; I'd to know if Nemesis really did reform at the end of time and space... and is trying to rectify his former ill-policies, or if Oro is just one more Nemesis plot.

Chill, man. Real chill.
Back to the topic on hand, I will agree that there's still a lot to be done that can improve the game. Honestly, I think as far as new game mechanics go, we should be set for a while, and the devs would do well by giving older content a good spit-shine to bring it up to the standard of the new stuff. Bug fixes, streamlining old arcs and old missions, that sort of thing. The next thing I'd advise is more content across all level ranges, but with a particular focus on the low levels- something to add to the same tired old arcs that I've run a hundred times.
Plus, I'm very curious what the heck's up with this "Coming Storm" thing. Stop teasing and spill it already, devs!
My story arcs: #2370- Noah Reborn, #18672- The Clockwork War, #31490- Easy Money
