Someone that doesn't want to or can't fully support themselves != the fisherman who is happy with "just existing". I can't STAND the concept of government welfare, and yet I believe strongly in the philosophy of the fisherman.

When I play my Ill/Rad I'm focused on getting to the final goal (my final goal, which is different than anyone else's), I have so many goals for him that I strongly doubt I'll ever achieve them all given my playtime and style, but every step closer makes me smile.

Other characters are more for less directed fun. Those that I don't have goals for, I tend to play in a much less directed manner. I don't really care what I'm doing on my scrapper for instance. If it sounds fun, that's where I'm going. I doubt I'll even bother with common IO's for that one, much less an optimized build.

Farmers farm because they are farmers. It doesn't matter even how you define farming, it could be street sweeping in atlas. If you define their group membership based on an activity, if they participate in that activity they are a member of the group. There is not one answer to why all of them participate in that activity, each one has their own personal reasons.

Given that it's a video game, I'm guessing that the answer for most people is they derive some sort of enjoyment from farming. And that's probably the only true answer to your question.

You are now my favorite redname.

There are more parallels between my approach to the game and the Ocho's approach to the game than I am entirely comfortable with.

"The CoH Development team officially supports farming, because some people find it fun."

So then does this count as an official red name post supporting farming? Can I quote you on that Ocho?

Am I the only one that finds it completely ironic that this thread was started by "Farm Boy"?

Princess Buttercup is going to be mad at you if sheep exp gets nerfed next.

Ah but see he got fed up with the monotony of farming and became a dread pirate instead .

Castle has gone on record as saying the developers are not against farming, per se. Powerleveling, maybe... but not farming. Castle did say, however, that they're against people farming because they feel they have to to keep up with everyone else. If you're having fun farming, more power to you.

I didn't say put it in a room like Scrooge McDuck, I said swim in it like Scrooge McDuck. If that means Lake Superior, fine, whatever.

And how can you make a cake without ingredients... hmm? And one of those ingredients is... flour, right? And... how does one get flour? Exactly right Westley... one farms so that one can make cake!!

I believe that a Kheldian Gold Standard should be based on SO's, and for anything above that... there's Platinum!

That 6 year old should NOT be farming for the flour for his own cake! Child labor laws!

That's it, I'm calling DSS!

No no no... it's not the 6 year old who's doing the farming! It's the Lv50 doing it. Besides, weren't you ever on a farm as a kid, helping around, what kind of childhood did You have?

Unlike my theatrical namesake, I was born and bred a city boy on the east coast. Hell, I never even saw a live RABBIT in person until I moved out to Iowa for college.

It isn't so much that farmers derive some sort of enjoyment from the activity of farming. It's the satisfaction of acquiring the loot, infamy, merits, that allow them to outfit their builds and toons with the best 'stuff' that drives people to farm. (gold sellers are of course the exception. They farm for a monetary value on the dollar.)

The developers have created a system that rewards farming and in many ways encourages this activity. Why farm? Because the game encourages it.
