New stuff because of that other game?
You should bear in mind that half the toted features of 'the other game' are stuff that we've been asking for in this game for years, some of which we're finally getting (Power Customisation for one, and we're getting a better version).
Remember that Cryptic no longer develops this game, and copying features from it would basically be ripping them off.

Hell, when you log into CO you're asked to choose your control style. The options are Champions, Fantasy, and Paragon.
Yeah, the MMO genre isn't exactly a hotbed of creativity. Even CoH has had features copied from it (Final Fantasy took the Sidekick system for one, and of course half of CO).
That said, I've heard a few complaints about the Nemesis system.
Hi,
So I played the Champions beta a bit but still love CoH/V and I think I will stick with them. But I can't help asking if there are other features that might make their way from Millenium City over to Paragon. For instance, will we ever see additional travel powers show up here or some version of that nemesis system? |
But most of the travel powers sounded like re-skinned versions of Sprint/Superspeed, Fly, SuperJump and Teleport, and basicly doable with costume pieces or auras.
Not to mention, the Nemesis system was first thought up by Positron, but Statesman didn't want it (Or possibly didn't think it could be put in) so they have not added it in yet. But if they do manage to add it, with COH improvements of course (My pick for next big thing after GR), then it would hardly be stealing from CO. It would be the originator putting it into the game he thought it up for.
Justice Blues, Tech/Tank, Inv/SS

Fighting The Future Trilogy

There's also new stuff because if there wasn't people would 'use up' all the content and leave -- especially for a subscription MMO.
Expand or die.
Now, what the competition is doing (and not just CO, but WoW et al.) may influence the direction of the expansion.

I find it a bit hypocritical that CO's list of features is topped by stuff we had been begging for in CoH during the Statesman era. Oh, now you're offering us this stuff? The best one-- made me laugh out loud, and forward it to my SG buds-- was the lure of a do-nothing in-game pet if I joined CO beta.
Sorry, but I have a lot of time invested in all that I have created here, and trying to get me to abandon it all for your new game, with promises of things that you didn't seem to think were worth the time when you were on this side, just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. "Becky and I aren't friends any more. You should stop being Becky's friend and be my friend!" I have experienced life under Statesman, and life under Positron, and I vastly prefer the latter. Why would I bail on things as they are now to go back to a Statesman-run universe?
...And now I have to get back to our Villain base upgrade, which I have been working on for three days, and hopefully will be ready to reveal to the SG today. Yeah, I have just a little bit invested in the world of CoH...

One also has to remember that the features were are getting now, and in GR, have also been in the works for over a year.

It seems like ever since Statesman left, the devs have been on a long campaign of giving the people what they want. Before that, it was all about tweaking what already existed, and adding new content, but Quality of Life was very low on the totem pole. Since the Positron era began, we have been given a great deal of candy.

It's not "since Statesman left," really, it's "Since NC bought the IP, hired over all the developers but one, and dumped money into the franchise while expanding the team."
Honestly, Cryptic left it on life support. 15 people? That's why things weren't feasable to do - and with a larger team, more money, and the support of NCSoft (without that extra layer of management, etc.) they're feasable now.

To be honest I just want the swinging travel power the most.

I'm guessing they pulled the team down to a level that NCSoft was perfectly happy with. Which is a shame because then so much that we and the dev team wanted to see happen couldn't happen. There just wasn't the man power or man hours available to do it.
Anyway CO has so much of what we are seeing Paragon Studios rolling into Citiy because the wish list was developed while Cryptic had ownership. So of course they set out to deliver as much of the wish list as they could.
After NCSoft North America appears to have decided that City's was one of its jewels, and not the neglected cash cow in the corner stall, NCSoft started pouring resources into improving the game. thus buying it from Cryptic, setting up their own development studio for it and at minimum doubling the dev team size. All of that has allowed the wish list items to be worked on. It will be fascinating to see what other items that were shelved for lack of man power/time will now show up.

But based on what I've seen of it I think the way CO did it looks very silly and poorly implemented.
I suppose a person could argue "well at least CO -has- a swinging power."
That's certainly true, but when it looks as bad as I think it looks it almost makes me have to ask why they even bothered.
I would never use it as is. *shrugs*
