A consistent 8% of earnings globally is hardly a drop.

I would love a drop like that in my financial bucket.

Perhaps a drop was to diminutive an analogy. Compared to their flag ship games
Lineage I (23%) and Lineage II (31%), CoH (6%) comprises a rather small portion of NCsofts income. That's before accounting for Aion (34%) which hasn't even gone global yet.

I'm not saying CoH isn't profitable. It's clearly making money and like every good company, NCSoft will take ever dime it can earn. I was simply putting things in perspective regarding their earnings.

Was tempted to start another thread for this, but I'll drop it here.

I recall a time, maybe a year ago, when subscriber numbers for MMORPGs were readily accessible. There used to be few websites that tracked and ranked MMORPGs based on subscriber numbers, though there were limitations to ranking MMORPGs solely on subscriber numbers.

Today, finding subscriber numbers is REALLY difficult (unless someone knows a place I'm not looking). Even NCSoft no longer includes it in it's quarterly earnings reports. Have subscriber numbers become completely obsolete for evaluating MMORPGs?

On a side note:

Personally, I would love to see CoH launched in a foreign market like India (where comic culture is closer to Western comic culture than, say Korea, where this game didn't take off) but it is probably much too late for something like that to occur.

They might, but then only for Aion. :P

It depends on how you're evaluating a MMORPG. What does active subscription level represent?

From a business perspective, without context those numbers are useless. A game with 100,000 subscribers could need to shut down within months or a game with 5,000 subscribers could bumble along forever.

From an average Joe perspective, companies don't want those numbers released unless they tell a good story. The fact of the matter is, every game loses subscribers every quarter, with spikes caused by new free content or pricing gimmicks (subscribe now and get a 9.99 monthly rate that reverts to 14.99 if you ever cancel) and even bigger spikes triggered by box expansions. The trend will still, generally, be downward.

All having access to these numbers does, really, is create angst among the regular folks about them. Businesses don't generally like transparency anyway, so from a business perspective there's zero reason to reveal them and from OUR perspective they're almost meaningless, too.

(Answering seriously even though it's a joke.) Aion's hair IS animated. I don't recall if long hair blows in the wind all the time, but doing something active will make it swing. I know my pony-tailed Ranger's hair flips over her shoulder when she does her little intro-spin on the select screen.

Of course, the engines are rather different too. I suspect we won't see animated hair unless we see an engine overhaul. Ghost Widow's famously flowing hair is essentially a cape if I understood it correctly, and it only looks passable (not even that good) with that hairstyle.

I'm patient - I can wait till the time is right for us to get moving hair too
I know all the devs secretly want it too - even if they don't know it - yet

You can estimate from the earnings reports, although micro transactions tend to muck that up a bit - I doubt to the tune of 50% or more, as Kruunch suggested the other day on the tanker forum, but.

If you know the earnings from CoX, specifically, you can guesstimate the numbers pretty closely. I'm not sure if NCSoft offers that level of detail in their reports, but if so, you can come probably within a reasonable margin of error.

Comparatively small, perhaps, but by no means insignificant. 6% is a pretty big chunk of change for corporations. If NCSoft's earnings dropped by 6%, it'd hurt their stock price fairly significantly. That'd be a HUGE drop. It may account for the smallest share of earnings amongst their other titles, but it's still a very significant part of their earnings.

Regardless of how the subscription numbers turn out, or what levels of profitability CoX continues to generate/affect for the company, I think it's great that the game - and the community - is still here 5 years after launch.

I hope that this presence continues on unabated.

Way to twist those words Kali.

I'd guesstimate about 20% actually but that's a total guess.

You can check out rough numbers at MMOGChart.com (these aren't entirely accurate but give gross estimates based on industry and company statements).

Virtually all of them include trial accounts except where MMOGChart.com guesstimates itself.

Well, when you say that enough revenue to cover 100,000+ accounts probably only covers 50,000 or so, with the rest coming from sales (micro-transactions and box sales), I'm not sure I'm doing the twisting, you know?

I rode the silly sky skiff thingy in Pademonium. My chracters hair blew in the wind according the movement of the skiff regardless of which direction the character was facing. Very, very cool "hair animation".

So is Aion good?

I don't even know what it's about yet, but it looks pretty.

Mechanics-wise Aion is nothing really special. I have not played Lineage but I'm told it's rather like that, if you haven't played it either then that won't help.

For me a game is all about the combat, and especially the Chanter is a lot of fun to play. They can use mace+shield, but they really shine when using a staff, which they wield like an actual martial artist would...and I'll leave it to more knowledgeable folks to name the style. They're front-line buffers and damage dealers, with fewer healing spells than Clerics but more offense. Awesome solo, as you might expect, PvE anyway.

PvP is a big part of the game, and frankly I haven't made it there yet. It really begins in the mid-20s. Supposedly, PvP is dominated by Sorcerers, the ranged damage dealers (think Blasters) and Assassins, Rangers close behind. Melee takes it in the shorts, and the Spiritmaster (pet class) is pretty much just screwed until very high levels, as they have only a few offensive spells and the pets are mostly ground-bound. Though some patches are on the way, and who knows what they'll bring. I haven't heard much about the two Priest classes, Cleric and Chanter, in PvP. There's a large PvP zone, the Abyss, but enemy forces can and do come through Rifts into regular areas and can attack people at will, although there's a system to discourage doing that for very long.

It's damn pretty, the world of Aion, and pretty friendly to PCs. Mine's probably 4 years out of date, and it runs Aion just fine. Biggest problem with the game is the fighting over spawns and resources out in the world. There's a particular quest-chain Asmodean side that ends with needing a particular spawn, a boss in a cave, and it's notoriously camped. Not unusual to hang around there waiting for it to pop up, and then it gets murdered out from under you by some high-level, or a random spawn aggros you whil you're waiting, and some other dude just waltzes in and takes your kill while you're preoccupied. Growl.

Crafting is time-consuming and expensive, frankly, I didn't bother much with it. You can buy some materials but others will need to be found in the wild or in auctions.

In an overly simplified explanation you have a non-player faction that wars with the player factions. This war had a cataclysmic event the split the player factions into two sides. Each side blames the other for the cataclysm and basically declares war on the other while still fighting the original non-player faction.

It all boils down to how you feel about fantasy MMORPGs. I got in on a closed beta weekend and basically pre-ordered the game before the weekend was out.

I personally thought the game was gorgeous.

If you are afraid of PvP, I suggest bypassing the game. The Aion Devs claim you can bypass PvP entirely, but PvP is an integral of the game.

While it's true everyone a particular class will have the same skill sets, based on what I've read and seen; skill sets are but one part of game play. Gear has a major part in your performance. The gear you chose and how you modify that gear will distinguish your character.

The physical elements of the character creator obliterate CoH but everyone in a class will start out with the same costume(armor). At higher levels (30+) you can customize the appearance and color of your costume.

I personally found the combat to both fun and challenging. I liked the animations of most the attacks. Even with in the same class, different weapons animated skills differently. I thought two handed swords looked very cool...until I tried a Polearm...I likes the Polearm.

Crafting can be expensive if you don't know what you are doing. I spent considerable time exploring the crafting system and after wasting god awful amounts of kinah(gold) I realized I want about it all wrong. In large part, when done correctly, crafting will at the very least pay for itself. The game seems balanced such that there is significant incentive for you to craft. Crafted items are either considerably cheaper than purchasable items or considerably superior. Crafted Armor specifically is far superior to purchasable armor, though dropped armor potentially exceeds crafted armor.

Gathering on the other hand is an absolute PITA. Gathering is time consuming an boring, but it does grant small amounts of XP. Gather is broken into two categories; extracting and aether extracting. While both can be ignored, several quests cannot be completed with out extractable items, so either extract them or buy them from someone else. Aether extraction is dangerous and cumbersome. There are only a few places to gather Aether and all involve flying. Flying time however is rather limited in duration. If flight time runs out, you fall to your death.
