How much does it take to be "rich" these days?
My latest level 50 character had about 45 Million Influence upon gaining level 47. Really one of my lowest overall considering how I slot/buy/sell(spending very little time on the market). I had been unlucky with drops(as a comparison, my previous character had over 350 million influence at about the same time).
I was well short of fully IOing this character with set bonuses(Spines/Dark). But....I WAS able to purchase all of the essentials to normal play. Only a couple of days later, he was fully IO'd(no purples obviously). It wasn't ideal, but he was more than playable....quite the contrary, he's been quite powerful in teams.
This jives pretty closely with Topdoc's post that 100 million is middle class(now).
Edit: The most glaring corners I had to cut was with PbAoE's. I slotted Cleaving Blow's and two Scirroco's in my aura attacks. The better sets were simply too expensive....for now...Total cost...about 80 million.
I'm willing to start a "rich" players social group. Hand me 100M Inf on anyside on any server and I will officially give you membership to the group and delcare you rich. Officially. For real.
Just for this week only I'll let 50M be rich. Officially rich.

"Smurphy has declared me officially rich, for a fee of only 50 million!"
Ah, but you'd have to do the 100 million anyway, otherwise you'd look rich but cheap...

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.
I used to think 100M felt rich. Nowadays, I feel that 300-500M feels "comfortable" and 1B+ feels rich. Part of that is that I do find a use for Purples in my level 50s, and prices on those can take the whole of what I used to feel was "rich" and more.
On the other hand, I've never found it easier to make inf than I do nowadays, at least using the market. So it's all pretty relative to market prices.
Blue
American Steele: 50 BS/Inv
Nightfall: 50 DDD
Sable Slayer: 50 DM/Rgn
Fortune's Shadow: 50 Dark/Psi
WinterStrike: 47 Ice/Dev
Quantum Well: 43 Inv/EM
Twilit Destiny: 43 MA/DA
Red
Shadowslip: 50 DDC
Final Rest: 50 MA/Rgn
Abyssal Frost: 50 Ice/Dark
Golden Ember: 50 SM/FA
As others have stated, it's relative to the player, and I agree.
That said, I'm still in the camp where 1 Billion is undoubtedly "rich",
and less than 10M is probably abject poverty.
For my own toons, the "comfortable" number is 100M, in addition
to being IO'd out (according to my own standards). I nearly always
"frankenslot" toons, so those builds usually cost 35M-75M for decent
sets and a few niceties (Kismet 6%, Karma -KB, Stealth IO etc.).
So, over the entire process, a nicely equipped "Middle Class" toon has
made 175M - 200M and still has, at least, 100M of it on hand.
At that point, unless he's intending to go on to a "marketeering career",
he has more inf than he'll ever need, or spend.
Of course, my actual marketeering toons aim for the cap and count as
"rich" at the previously stated 1B mark.

I've been rich, and I've been poor. Rich is definitely better.
Light is faster than sound - that's why some people look smart until they speak.
For every seller who leaves the market dirty stinkin' rich,
there's a buyer who leaves the market dirty stinkin' IOed. - Obitus.
I am not sure how to measure this. Is it the total amount spent on the toon plus some amount liquid on hand?
I "feel" rich when I have enough on hand to buy anything I may want so ~1 billion; however by the time I have that much on hand I don't really want for much.
the few 50s I have cost ~1.5 billion to slot up. (and may cost over 2x that now I remember getting a pair of PO +3 def for 350 mil and now those would cost a billion each)
after that inf is just a way to track time for efficient use; < 2 mill an hour and I am slacking > 5 mill an hour and I am lucky.
so I will say I feel rich when I have earned a total of 2.5 billion.

We burn more Influence before 8am than you make all day.
I have the ability to make money at a rate that's sufficient for my wants. That makes me rich, however much money I have in my pocket. If I've spent all my cash, I'll just make more.
That is true wealth. Someone with 10bn is only rich until he or she spends it all.
How would that be to just watch it burn knowing it was once yours? Wow, I truly cannot fathom that.

we've all lit cigars with 100 dollar bills before, it just that repeated a lot, and with a small Chinese man to boot!

Imagine walking into *that* warehouse.
Thing about the inf destruction party is... over the course of it, my net worth was actually going UP.
That last burn was a really big one, though.

10 Billion and upwards is rich.
10 billion.
Mayhem:
I'd definitely recommend waiting on any build that involves purples. I'm expecting the new mission settings to lure most/all of the farmers out of MA, resulting in a (relative) flood of purple recipes. That's why the Goat is so loaded right now- I pulled all my purple bids, sold the recipes I was holding and am waiting to buy them back at a discount once I16 lands. |
Of course I expect I16 will close up most of the surprisingly wide niches I've been working on the market lately, so I might as well make hay while the sun shines and store up some capital now for the inevitable bear market post-I16 - save myself a bit of "work" later.
To be considered rich also now requires an excess of hats.

Anything over a billion and you could consider yourself rich. Makes me wonder what percentage of characters actually have a billion or more...
I do know that if I dip below 100mil I'm feeling pretty poor.
To me being rich is having an abundance of possessions which does not mean just money but also merits, tickets, purple, rare enhancements, rare salvage on multiple toons on multiple servers. My opinion is at least 6 billion in infl across all toons, and 2500 merits, 9999 tickets, 50 rare enhancements, 50 rare salvage, 30 purples on red and blue side. To me that is the start of being rich.
I feel rich when I can outfit a toon at "buy it now !" prices without thinking twice, which involves having much more money than the actual cost of the whole build. These days, I'd say that's about 20 billions hero side and 50 billions villain side. Yeah, I'm not rich anymore.
To me, 100 mil is rich when I first reach that milestone on a character. If I had 100 mil on my main, though, I'd feel poor.

My guage for wealth is when I can do what I want without worrying about how much will be left in my account during the interim of my 'work.' As long as I can work my niches and never have to worry about having enough left to cover listing fees, that is rich to me.
