There has been chatter about CoH2 for a while now.
CoV is CoH2.

CoH:GR will be CoH2.5

Are they starting over from scratch? No.

CoV was a stand alone game. You didn't have to have CoH to play it, and you had the option of linking to the two together. CoV has higher RAM requirements that CoH.

CoH:GR won't be stand alone, but it won't be a "must have" either. It may very well have higher system requirements than CoH or CoV (aka CoX or CoH ... might as well just call it CoH at this point as it was CoH:Mac, CoH:AE, and will be CoH:GR.)

I'm not sure how you can say "CO is what CoH was supposed to be" unless you work for Cryptic. If you work for Cryptic, you shouldn't be posting here about how your game is a better version of CoH.

If Champions Online is what "CoH was supposed to be", I'm glad that I have what I have rather than "what it was supposed to be".

Champions Online is huge letdown to me. I'm a big fan of Champions the RPG since it was released up to the first hardbound book. It is a great system; it was revolutionary to pen-and-pencil RPG'ing. Too bad that great system isn't in Champoins Online.
Micro-transactions, 8 total character slots, the quick-money grab of "life-time" memberships to people buying the game before they play it -- it just starts adding up to something that not only trivializes the name of a great pnp RPG name, but doesn't interest me at all.

Seriously.
With a the problems that we have here - and I see quite a few faults -, this is one of the best games that I have ever played.
By-and-large, the people that I play with are great gamers here. The majority of them are not rude and they like to play the game the way that it was intended.
I have to take time now to take action against situations and players that I don't want to deal with in the game. This has only really come to a head recently since AE was released.
But, even in this time of turmoil, I still love this game.

I love Champions the RPG too. What Cryptic did to it stinks.

First off, I agree with some of your other points in your post.

I have to say, that it is hard for me to believe that an individual with two masters degrees could think that the Signature characters were the "revolutionary" part of Champions the RPG.

If you have played 3 RPGs and one of them was Champions, and you created a character - you would know the difference between Champions and the other systems.

I think that anyone that has ever played Champions the RPG would agree that the mechanics of the game are the major innovation.

You can be smart and still be a dummy about some things.
Obviously, if HE thought that the Signature characters were what made Champions the RPG so popular, then he is a dummy. However, I think it is quite clear that he never really played Champions the RPG or is it that he is really so far removed from actually gaming that he can't see that Foxbat having all of his powers in an a single OAF (Obvious Accessible Focus - aka an item which can be taken away from him quite easily) was a joke.

Seriously, they buy the joke characters (that everyone I ever played Champions understood were either jokes or examples of how not-to-make-characters) and don't buy the innovative system that made the Champions name noteworthy?

It doesn't seem too intelligent to me.

Of course every game is after your money. To think otherwise is silly. The point is that this game tries to give you what the developers think you want. All Jack ever did was say, "It's impossible!" to every suggestion that might involve more resources. In that way he is after your money. He is greedy, pure and simple. And greed is one thing that is unforgivable to me.

I get the feeling NCSoft is taking a wait-and-see approach with CO. I expect they don't want to spend money on engine upgrades or whatever until they see how much the game cuts into their player base.

I'm in wait-and-see mode on CO myself. I like the idea of a highly customizable power structure and the ability to throw cars and such is something that CoX really needs. However, I despise cel shading and I'm leery of Emmert's constant references to God of War and consoles in general when he discusses the game. (Did you see the one interview where Emmert promised that CO would have button mashing, as if that's a good thing?)

I'll happily download the trial version of CO (if there is one), but I am not preordering. CO has many trials to face. Will it find an audience? Is it too customizable for the average class-and-level MMO player? Will the nerfs be brutal? If it underperforms will Atari step in and start meddling?

In a perfect world CO will find its niche without killing CoX, but forcing CoX to up its game to remain competitive.

Then there's DCUO. My prediction for that one is it will fail straight out of the starting gate. With CoX and CO already at the table, how much of the superhero MMO pie is gonna be left to go around?

After seeing videos of both, I disagree. I believe CO will know a short lived fame, and DCUO will cut COs feet from under it. The reason I believe this is because already Cryptic has gone back on its word on features they wanted to put into the game, realising early that what they promised was biting off more than they could chew.

Uhh I don't work for Cryptic, i never said it was a better game, also never mentioned they would start from scratch. If start working on something and involved new tech and i like what i have but the project gets canceled am i going to throw away that work? **** no i'm not. City of Villains wasn't really a stand alone game nor an expansion. And anyway they've been rolled into one ******* game anyway. Going Rogue is not CoH 2.5, thats like saying Wrath of the Lich King is WoW 3.

I'd also like to say again that I'm not a fan of Emmert. He did a ton of crappy things to CoH, and no one likes to be told they are playing game different from how the other person envisioned it. That's something that should have been thought of before the game launched. I also understand that Jack lied a lot. I do take that into account when i look at CO.

And for you're viewing pleasure the original 2002 City of Heroes trailer. http://s.pcmovies.ign.com/pc/video/c...061202_001.mov (its a quick time vid)

Also I'd like to point to share an interview with Richard Dakan who started the CoH project. If you find yourself to be a little lazy start around question 5 and go down from there. http://coh.coldfront.net/index.php/c.../view/538/116/

Yeah, I knew they had lowered it, I just didn't know to what, and was too lazy to find out

But my lower toons could have one if I wanted, since I have a fairly well geared out toon that only ever does dailies. 20 gold is about 2, maybe 3 dailies, then mail myself the gold and voila! Mount.

Sure would be nice to be able to mail things between characters here, like say... influence.

The ability to mail myself ANYTHING would be nice... I've been asking for an in-game mailing system since i9...

I'm not so sure DCUO will be that popular with CoH and CO players, as it sounds like it's going to be much more limited in the customization area - and it also look quite PvP heavy, which might not attract that many CoH and CO players as PvP seems quite a minority attraction here.
I think DCUO is going to be more like a superhero multiplayer console beat 'em up, with some MMO parts added to it, rather than an out and out MMO.

having done some beta for CO....all I can say is, meh.

I do like some of the powers (darkness blasts, oh yeah!) but overall, just not real impressed with Champions Online.

The darkness is feared for a reason.

Shh! The beta is still closed.....

Wait, so, what does that make this weekend? Are their servers closed down?

Yeah the servers are down. It was a stupid playtest time today.

lol, I was playing catch up reading this thread and got confused about which beta you all were talking about. For a brief moment I thought you were talking about Issue 16 beta and my heart sang with joy, then I realized you were still talking about CO and my heart made a sound more like a fart than a song.

So I picked up an open Beta key today and downloaded for 2+ hours. All I have to say is: Totally meh about it. Two hours of playing and everything I saw was something that CoH has. Nothing at all caught my interest.

Bingo. This has been my impression of it since I got in to their beta awhile ago. It was almost stupid how much of it looked like they copied WoW. It was one of my first thoughts after playing a few hours. I took screenies and sent them to a friend of mine who won't play anything but WoW and it was his very first comment.

The art style. The user interface. The missions. It looked and felt very much like WoW, but with a little Freedom Force mixed in.

Now, I'm not knocking on WoW. I've played it and it wasn't for me, but that doesn't make it a terrible game. I just think it's funny how obvious it seems that Champions copied a lot of what's there from WoW.

BUT I will say that the number and diversity of travel powers in Champions was pretty cool. I especially loved Acrobatics as a travel power.

Yeah it still looks nice. BTW...I'm not beta testing it. Acrobatics...is that the swinging one? Question...can you take on more than 1 enemy at a time like CoX or is it more like 1 or 2 like WoW? Really when it comes down to it, that's one of the things I hate most about WoW....well that, teaming, and the slow pace of traveling. Oh have yall tried teaming and missions? Are those like WoW or like CoX?

Acrobatics is one of the 'natural' themed travel powers. It's basically "run faster and jump farther than usual" but it's sprinkled with flips and stuff when you jump sometimes. Pretty neat to look at. They all had travel suppression as well, like we do, after attacking, but also after being attacked, so you slowed down if an enemy saw you and attacked, but also, if you were hit hard enough, your travel power was detoggled. Very bad when flying.

I felt it was surprisingly easy to die in Champions. But then, I guess that's why there's no penalty for dying. But what was very annoying was that if you died while fighting an enemy, their HP bar returned to full, or if you run away from them for long enough (which didn't seem long at all), their HP bar returned to full. It was like "If it was hard to fight this enemy before, it won't be getting any easier each time you try!" I could sometimes take on multiple enemies, but there were very frustrating enemies where I couldn't fight more than one or else I'd be dead in seconds.

I was only ever on a team once, and I can't think of anything that different about it. Missions though, were very much like WoW. Many, many, many hunts and then running up to corpses to collect stuff. Most of the content in the game is outdoors, including quite a few supervillain fights. I was getting tired of going to fight a supervillain or rescue someone, only to find someone just completing the same mission, and then I'd have to wait.

I didn't like the buffs, either. 8% resistance to one type of damage for 14 seconds on a 2 minute recharge?

Early in beta i would say that it was like 1 v 1 when it came to combat and that was super annoying because almost every mob is made up of at least three guys. The game has changed a lot though, last night while i was playing i took on 8 guys at once that were even con to me and i killed them all. The HP bar going up on the enemies took some getting used to but like many of the game play styles that was taken from another game so for people moved from other games it won't be that big of a deal. While i too said it myself that it plays like WoW lets be honest WoW didn't do anything really original because they took a lot of stuff from EQ, I mean really the guy who worked on EQ worked on WoW.

Now don't get me wrong I love CoH/V i mean I've been here since June 04 but i think both games have their places and i'm not going to knock either one for the things they do. I hope they build off each other really making both games better as the continue. I know i'll probably end up playing both for a little while.
