In-game Email
1) Send someone an e-mail that compels them to respond.
2) Wait for a response.
3) Get a response.
Voila.
And by the way, the Spam button *does* work. The RMTers are just making new accounts after the ones that are reported as spamming are banned.

Many players do use the existing system quite legitimately, so I don't think removing it is a viable option.
Personally, I'd like to see an option to disable e-mail altogether.

I think I'd only ever recieved 1 genuine email in the past 5 years of playing.
That one was from a perspective member trying to join my SG.
Nowadays I really wish we had an option to turn off ingame mail. Nothing is more annoying than having to delete 30 to 40 spam letters every time I log in. If anyone really needed to reach me an offline tell works just as well.

It's tough, really. While it would be nice to disable e-mail, it doesn't take *that* long to deal with, and I'd much rather spend 10 seconds deleting e-mails than having to put up with them using /tells again.
The spam button does work. If you log in and see you have email, check it. If the sender name is has the name "empty" instead of a name, that account has been banned by the mods as one reported several times for sending spam email. On the empty accounts, just click delete. On the emails that have an actual name that you want to report, click on Spam and it will send a spam notice to the mods and will add that name to your global ignore list.
If your Global Ignore list is full, it will delete the older name in the list in favor of the new name just added. Usually, this is not a problem if all you have are Email RMT spammers in your Global Ignore list. But if you have other players in that list as well, they may eventually get bumped off the Global Ignore list as well and if they are really nasty, they end up bugging you again.

My boyfriend reported me as a spammer, because he forgot I had sent him an e-mail on one of his toons...

No plans for the e-mail system have been announced by the devs since they added the Spam button several issues back. Sadly, for most players (I believe), the e-mail system is little more than a spam in-box.

the spam while annoying dosent bother me that much really, just the gold farmers messages that say "Sorry for bothering you" or the "This is the only way we can tell you about.."
I do like the ones that cant even spell "Trusted"....

I have submitted the suggestion to be able to disable it several times through the petition system. Maybe if many more do so it will get done sometime. Don't hold your breath though.

People have suggested that we should be able to choose to turn email off completely and I think that's a good idea. Others have suggested eliminating the email system completely and I think that idea SUCKS LIKE A TORNADO. But that's just my opinion because I actually use the email system. Frequently.

or /bug and choosing the "Suggestion" radio button?
The forum just clogs up the petition system.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
I would rather we get 2 global ignore lists.
A player ignore list, and a spam ignore list.

Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.
I don't want the e-mail system elimated, and I don't want it turnable-offable either. I think the following would help the situation:
1) When a spam account is banned, have it kick off a process that deletes all messages that person has sent from all mailboxes across all servers. I don't see any reason why I see e-mails from "empty" in my mailbox.
2) When a spam account is banned, have it kick off a process that removes that account from everyone's ignore lists. If they can't log in, there's really no point in them taking up space in my ignore list, is there?
3) Create a secondary ignore list for spam, a list separate from our regular ignore list. Names added via /ignore go to the to the regular ignore list and don't get removed. Names added via the Spam button go to the spam list and get bumped off as it fills up.
4) Improve the heuristics that detect what is and isn't spam. Right now, it ain't too good.
5) Do some due diligence on the back end to keep RMTers from gaining access to the e-mail system. I was under the impression that trial accounts could not send e-mail, but I've heard conflicting reports that there is a way around that limitation. If there is, plug it. If there's not and people are using bogus information to register real accounts, figure out some better way to stop that.
6) Because it bugs so many people, and because it's just a good idea genereally, when someone reads their e-mail, turn off the red e-mail lettering. This would be a good QoL change in general, because as it is, I can't tell when I have new e-mail without deleting all of my existing e-mail first, which I'm not going to do.
7) Hunt down the RMT spammers and kill them. Yes, I know it might not be easy, and it might cost a lot of money to actually carry it out, but man, would it make me feel a lot better. I'll chip in to hire the team of assassins if necessary. Maybe you could even offer an add-on pack for $20 or so where players who buy it would get a "Nuisance Handler" badge, and use the money generated to form the hit men.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

What we have is a QoL issue with the ignore system caused when loot was introduced and the mail system after /tell was disabled on trial accounts. We also have a support team that for one reason or another can't act fast enough when a spammer appears and is reported. Action against the account occurs well after the spam bot is done.
I suspect that 1) the automatic spam notification generates the most incident reports in a single day however would you rather see the limited GM help (which is shared by all NCSoft games) be spent helping players with actual problems or be utterly preoccupied in verifying spammers and shutting them down sooner? In a perfect world I would want both of course but when running a business you simply don't have the resources. And as for sold accounts, I wouldn't know where to begin on how to identify them. Couples split up, children "inherit" their parent's or sibling's account and credit cards are frequently changed.
The thing is every "society" has a certain level of, well tolerance isn't quite the right word, of illegality. You can't eliminate all illicit behavior but you try to keep much of it in check with the resources the rest of society is willing to grant you. What society doesn't see, they won't care about.
Once the devs implement some change to the mail system, rumored in I16, that would allow players to ignore spam, whether with whitelist options like some found in hide or by some other means, I believe most players would be satisfied. The inf peddlers will of course find another way to advertise. No system is perfect. As for now, learn to either ignore the red e-mail indicator or help by tagging spammers with the spam button so action can eventually be taken against them.

Some people further up-thread have said that E-mails from 'empty' mean the account has been banned. This is not necessarily true. E-mails also show up from 'empty' if the character that sent the E-mail has been deleted. I spam mark even the 'empty's in case the account is still active.

Is this supposed to deliver anything to me besides SPAM?
I very much get the feeling that clicking on the SPAM button for unwanted emails from gold farming services does not report them for moderation in any way. All it does is global ignore the sender, and at this point I'd need an ignore list of more than 1000 global users to hold the list of "GO AWAY!" users who have spammed my characters.
Any plots and plans to make the in-game email system do anything OTHER THAN deliver SPAM?
