What kind of dpi are you going for on the sigs? I've just started playing with GIMP a little and may make myself a sig here shortly.
Throwing darts at the board to see if something sticks.....

Powerforge - I'm also self taught in all these compu-graphics stuff and you did a great job on the banner! Also, regarding file size when fading between images - the smoother the blend, the more images required, the bigger the file becomes. At least that's what I found with my trial and error. The only downside to banners IMO, is that you can never, (or rarely that I've seen), present the full costume it all it's glory. It's either a head or bust shot so it can be fit into a fairly restrictive height. |

Soul Train you might want to shrink you sig just a little i never like the ones that are to big for the forums so in makes it look all weird and stuff.

Tuter means that it's too long horizontally. When I made the banner, I sized it so that it has enough room to be cut or cropped down smaller. It wouldn't be an issue to cut it down to around 650 pixels wide, which is what the official dimensions are I believe.
