Cathedral of Pain

So I paid for City of Villains back in 2005 but I have yet to be able to use the Cathedral of Pain that was advertised on the box. I looked in the base for it but nothing. Can I get some sort of refund for this? Come this October I will have waited 4 years for this.

In all seriousness though, is this actually going to come out, or are we have supposed to have forgotten about this with colored powers and the upcoming Rouge expansion?

On the back burner so far several of us doubt it'll ever see the light of day.

Of course, several of us thought power customization would never happen, so nobody really can say yes or no. We're not the developers.

As long as there is a "this base cannot get raided ever" button that allows me to ignore raid pathing requirements when and if the CoP gets re-instated I will be happy.

The CoP was, from what I hear, incredibly broken on implementation and would have to be rebuilt from the ground up. Not to mention the entire Item of Power system was scrapped for Inventions in the meantime, PvP is more unpopular than ever, and bases updates seem to have been scrapped, nobody is optimistic about it anymore.

Well, personally, I'm very optimistic about the CoP, in the sense that I don't think Dev time is ever going to be spent on this feature I will never use, but instead on other features that I might.

That and the entire Cathedral of Pain concept- that is, multiple teams working together- seems to be of the outdated MMO mindset that CoH has moved past. This game doesn't have WoW-style 'raids', besides the Mothership and Hamidon, of which the former has few tactics beyond 'rampaging horde' (and we love it that way), and the latter is considered a niche thing.

One of my SG-mates went to Comicon and brought back news that Positron said that the Cathedral of Pain will be back "at some point"

Not anything terribly solid...but there it is.

The CoP/IoP/base PvP concept as originally designed will probably never be back, simply because it is meant for a style of play that CoX has precious little of. In many MMOs, it is nearly impossible to do really well in the game unless you belong to a big active group. Solo-friendly CoX, however, makes it easy to have very small groups that perform all the functions of a big group. So there just aren't that many mega SG/VGs around, compared to the ones like I'm in, that has over a hundred alts but only five actual human beings in it.

However, I do foresee that someday there will be some sort of SG/VG-only mission named Cathedral of Pain. I don't know if Items of Power will ever be back, but if they are and still have the PvP requirement, I doubt many groups will bother to get them.

Well even if the CoP was that horribly broken (the vets that I know that used it said it wasnt, some people were using it for farming, etc), make the a central new issue focul point with new base content like, say, I would love to have a base like some of the CoT or Council mish maps, on a smaller scale.

It wasn't broken per se but an aspect of it provided infinite XP if you knew what to do and the devs couldn't figure out a way to fix that without breaking the whole CoP trial so it was pulled. Read about it here

Perhaps in Going Rogue it might. I hope it comes again.

The thing is, before it should really be brought back, base issues and PvP both need to be a lot closer to their finalized state. Without those two systems running how the devs want and interacting nicely with each other, there's no point in trying to throw a reworked CoP trial on top of them both. Maybe after I16 and/or Going Rogue, there will finally be time on the development schedule to really devote time and manpower to hammering out bases and PvP.

There was.

It was called - don't have an IoP.

Indeed, I asked Posi and Ocho and others about some of these long standing things. COP is still on the burners. back burner, but still a work in progress and not entirely abandoned. Now: don't get your hopes up for it to be like you wanted it in 05, and don't think that it'll be anything in particular, when they make it it'll be what it'll be. I know some folks will give huzzas but others will still be complaining about it not being "the way it was".

Y'know, I'd honestly be happy if they'd just release Rularuu for us to fight, whether or not it had anything to do with the CoP. And I'd kill for the CoP map in AE, if it's anything like what I've imagined from descriptions. Let the CoP itself die, I say, but salvage the working bits for something else.

Not true. Before the change, whenever you tried to place objects in the base the game was constantly telling you that you couldn't put it there because it "blocked raid pathing." So even if you never intended to ever have a raid, you had to arrange your base as if you were. It was a huge pain for basebuilders.

This is my take on it at this point. The idea that we will ever have PVP base raids and/or IoPs are ships that have long sailed away. The Devs have clearly given up on the whole idea of PvP base raids anyway with the removal of the base raid pathing. It's unfortunate it never worked, but it's time to let that dream go and move on.

I think the best case scenario would be for the Devs to salvage what they can of the content and rework it into an UNBROKEN playable PvE experience that everyone can enjoy. This is in line with what Posi has said because when he says they are "bringing it back" that certainly doesn't mean it's guaranteed to be anything like they originally intended.

I also find it annoying that the Power Liberator / Master Thief badge has the dubious honor of being the only badge to ever be intended as a permanently available badge yet become effectively a one-time only event badge. Frankly I believe the badge should have been removed from the game years ago when the CoP/IoP were pulled. Its only purpose since has been as a sad reminder of a game feature that never actually worked to begin with. In fact in light of the recent removal of almost 80 MA badges the fact that this badge wasn't pulled is almost laughable considering its existence is more questionable than the MA badges ever were.

But if they are not going to remove it then the next best solution would be to modify its original requirement and make it available again in some reasonable way. The Devs have already modified several other badges when it was shown their original requirements were either broken or unreasonable. We can only hope the Devs will account for it properly in the future.

As time goes on many features will be tried and if they dont work will be pulled. The Devs are always trying new and innovating ideas and it is easy to go to far then have to try another approach, we saw this with the MA system, we are seeing it now with going Rogue being temporarily replaced with Spectrum.

I have also been assured CoP is on the backburner but not forgotten. They have many ideas that have been constantly asked for by players. The devs will try everything and give us the best ones they can in the short span they have to work on it. It is not easy to appease over 180,000 people.

Overall This game has received far more constant attention by the Devs than other MMORPG's and i still call CHAMPION Server HOME! My apartment is on the top floor of the VDO building looking out over Atlas Park, the view is great

Opps, sorry, missed the bit about pathing.
