You must bear in mind that mereman is old, senile and makes very little sense even when he isn't 'with drink'.

I approve of this thread, since it puts it better than I ever could.

That's the merge part, not the booze part.

I'd rather this forum never existed, but now it does. And I don't have a suggestion for what to do with it.

The whole "EU Only Issues" thing is probably only going to ever amount to a couple of threads. I see the attraction, but I think it'll leave this place a ghost town.

I know I'm the (EDIT - Id**t is blocked by the forum censor. I wonder if knob is? No, lol, it isn't!)So..ahem...I know I'm the KNOB who posted it in the first place, and part of me does wish it didn't exist in the first place, but now it's here, i can see that 'please ignore it' is a massively dunderheaded thing to call for lol, and I actually sort of like that there is a forum designated for the Brits (and other English speaking Europeans). It could even be looked at as something that 'we' have that the Americans dont. City life is for every English speaking nationaloty. it's not a US forum. The Germans have their own forum, the French have their own forum, we Brits have our own forum. The Americans have to share

If the yanks had their own forum for 'US-Only Issues' in addition to the City Life one, that would be fairer on them.

Hating the new smileys, btw.

Eco.

PS Tongue in cheek, all of that. We all know that this wasn't a server merge, was it? It was a server aquisition.

To me, an "axe" is either a weapon or a guitar, whereas an "ax" is a tool used for chopping wood. I'm not aware that there's a difference in British English and American English between the two.

However, we might disagree on how much exactly a "billion" is. I say it's 1,000,000,000, and that's all there is to it!

As a separate but related thought, I want an Antarctic Lounge. Why are South Polish people being left out? They could side with the Aussies against all of us over which months comprise summer and winter!

An ax is an axe is an axe. It's merely a difference in spelling (although I call it being lazy ) and not a distinction between objects.

Don't do the American thing and think you're alone in the world... :P

//Jack
That's actually an interesting item of note. "European" isn't a national identity and Europeans don't share common language or culture. As such, aside from the notion of preserving the feel of a separate European forum as existed before the merge, it seems kind of... Ridiculous to have a "lounge" especially for Europeans as though they weren't as different between each other as they are from the Americans.

When the offer to move to the EU servers came out, I refused it out of hand, even though I live in Europe. Why? Well, why would I move? I speak English and Bulgarian and, sadly, do not speak "European" so the German and French servers would be locked to me. Why, then, would I want to trade 11 servers that speak a language I can understand for 2!!! servers that speak that language? It didn't make sense to lump Europeans in the same basket then and it doesn't make sense to do so now. So what if I'm 7-10 time zones ahead of the bulk of the players? I'm 1-2 time zones ahead of most other Europeans anyway.

I guess my point is that this division between Americans and Europeans is silly. Not only are Europeans nothing like each other just within Europe, but Americans are probably just as diverse within the US.

As Croesis says ax and axe are the same, just alternate spellings.

In my experience, the US billion (10^9) tends to get used in Britain in preference to the old British billion (10^12). I blame politicians and businessmen who wanted to start boasting about how much they spent or were worth and realised that a billion sounds more than just saying a thousand million.

If I've got this right, when the British government talks about how many trillions are being put into rescuing the economy they actually mean billions. But again - a trillion sounds a lot more than a billion.

BTW - I notice that another poster is asking for a North American Lounge... shouldn't it be something more american, like a diner, rather than a lounge?

I'd vote for an American ultra-lounge. Vegas, baby!

A truck stop restroom?

The European lounge.

The American toilet.

Hehe, that billion thing is always a bit confusing, especially when you come from a country where you have not only million -> 1000 million -> billion -> 1000 billion but rather Million -> Milliarde -> Billion -> Billiarde, so that per default the British system looks a lot more convincing and "correct".

The preservation of a separate "European" English-language area has, I think, more to do with the preservation of the diversity of cultural expression on the massive new forum. It may be less apparent to our North American cousins because they have become used to a very large and very noisy forum over the years, whereas the European forums were smaller, tighter, and better related to the cultural experience of the English-speaking European regions.

Since these boards have gone live I've found it almost impossible to find and follow the threads about the Ashes series, for example, or to track down many of our old Creative threads, follow news about comic conventions and sci-fi events in the UK, or keep abreast of the media chatter that relates to UK television and cinema releases. This last one is especially tricky since North American TV threads are littered with spoilers for shows that have yet to air and films that have yet to be released here in the UK, and our inevitable threads about Dr Who and Torchwood will threaten to spoil the surprise for many North American viewers.

I doubt that there is a need for a "North American Lounge" since, to my eyes at least, this is essentially a North American forum to which the European servers were added. We are indeed a smaller cultural fish in this pond, and consequently need a degree of consideration.

Truth be told, I don't think the preservation of the English-language area of the European forums has gone far enough. Personally, I would have liked at least parity with the French and German-speaking forums, and maintained an area that contained all the old European topics under one roof, so I can still follow our traditional threads. That wouldn't stop North Americans reading and contributing to threads about the contents of Cornish pasties, nor does it prevent us offering uninformed opinion on what makes a decent bagel. But it would make culturally sensitive board moderation easier and appropriate, and protect the minority.

Bindweed pretty much seems to have got it right on.

While the US servers were each tight and there were several multi-subforum posters the EU forums seemed FAR more tight on friendships/relationships etc.

Nothing against the americans at all, they have a fun and active forum. But for the EU it always kinda felt like "we'll make the best of what we have". I lurked mainly, but the active posters REALLY worked hard with each other to build up a friendly, personable forum.

Meanwhile with the sheer size of the US forums it's, well, easy to get lost.

My 'significant part of actual british people' was referring to the English. I sadly do not know a single English person who refers to Britain as i or the other celts i know do.
