That's a rather selfish way of thinking, I think.

Is probably not a good thought for a marketing department (as much as I hate marketing they do tend to realise that customer = cash)

"Well, they found my diary today.
They were appropriately appalled
at the discovery of the eight victims
They're now putting it all together.
Women wrapped in silk
with one leg missing
Eight legs, one body, silk,
spider, brilliant!"

The bottom line is this. When people buy new PCs nowadays, they're going to be better than most of the PCs people have had for 5-6 years.

New PCs are more expensive, and people who buy them are already going to be able to play most games at a suitable level.

Enthusiasts will splash out for more beasty PCs to play games. Graphics and computer hardware are doubling around every 18 months, and it has done so for the last 10 years.

The world isn't going to be stuck in the past because some people refuse to upgrade, it'll just leave you behind.

This game could CERTAINLY do with a gfx upgrade, to make it more marketable to graphics enthusiasts with amazing computers.

You don't pay £400 for an Nvidia GTX 295 graphics card with 98 billion texture fill rate per second (which is more than double of my GTX 280) to play low-end games.

This game can, and should get a graphics update.

This has actually...just made me come back to Co*.

After i quit a few months ago i was roaming around looking for a new MMO ot play having got tired of the repetitiveness. But this has actually just made me rejoin.

Razor your missing something very important tho CoX graphic are in computer terms is pretty enchant and a simple texture update wouldn't help matters a great deal.

To do it properly you would need to pump life into the city more realistic trees, more realistic garbage sitting on the street corners, having grafity appear as that random helion spray paints the wall, true reflective surfaces, etc etc

Then you would need NPC to populate the zone and they would need a graphics update so that they looked better or they would stick out like a soar thumb.

Some of these changes would require more than just a lick of paint and going by how GV can bring a relativity good PC to its knees I would hate to think what would happen if all the zones were brought up to GV levels or above

A proper graphics overhaul for CoH is not just a matter of adding extra slide to the right hand side of the slider its a full on rip out what's there and rebuild to current standards and when all that's said and done you can bet that at least some of the current subscription base wont be able to run it at what they did

There is a huge gap between a GTX295 'graphical' game and a MMO. If you want to see such graphics that makes your 295 sweat, a MMO aint the place to look for. (no, AoC was just poorly coded, very very poorly).

I prefer seeing texture updates first, bit more detail and variation.

Ok, ermm.. alive? variation? I dont know the english word.

Like few places in EotN GW, where you walk in the area and you go jawdropping 'woooooooooow....'. And they done that with a pretty old engine.

So people who have spent 2k on a new beast of a PC are going to buy a five year old game why?

The only people who will buy it are those who are interested in Hero Type games, and with CO début soon there won't be many.

Tacking on fancy graphics will not make the game younger.

Now replace CoH by WoW.. ironic, that in such case it is true, people still buy a 5 year old game. Or top that, maple story! (yeah, 2d game). And people spending 2k for playing MMO's, i mock them.

Well, its close. Lets say the atmosphere is alive, active and really feels 'complete'. Birds singing, tree's waving in the wind, details of structures, randomness.

Its also worth noteing that not all new PC will play the latest games hell some new PC wont even play older games the PC market is full of bottom end low speck PCs that can be had for a few hundread quid (cheapest i've seen being just over £200) the first thing to be cut from a low end PC to make it cheep is graphics you very rarely get a low end PC that has a good nvidea or ATI chip set in it (hell you luck if they have anythin above the bog standard intel chip set) next to get hit is memory.

take this Monster from ebuyer sounds great on screen what with its nvidea graphics and its 2 gig of ram but

and it probably is its the kind of PC i would tell my parents to get if they were after a new one its nice a small and more than likely great for surfing the web and watching TV thrue iplayer but i bet its less than great for playing games and yes before its pointed out it would probably run CoH but the question is would it run CoH if CoH got a graphics update?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, I doubt the Devs would increase the amount of computer power needed to run at the lowest settings, or even at the current settings. Chances are an additional level of quality will be available above 'Very High', or an alternate pack of visuals/textures available for purchase/download for those who want shinier pretties.

Just because the game's visuals could be improved, doesn't mean it has to be mandatory.

Well apart from people who want to five or ten box it but then they're a whole different entity and they won't care about good graphics.

TBH I think the only way to get the sort of graphics that Razor wants they'd need to follow the EVE online route and release two separate clients. Better textures, higher poly count models are one thing. Graphics that actually give top end machines a run for their money is an entirely different thing.

May I also point out a gfx update doesn't necessarily mean you need more power, a gfx overhaul might leave you needing LESS power in fact, since the engine might run much smoother than the old beast we have and it still might look better.

It gets sort of funny when I (occationally) "lag" out in grandville at times, but not in the most demanding sequences in the most demanding games on the market at the moment.

That's not down to this being an MMO, Grandville being a huge zone or anything like that, it's just an old engine trying to do something it wasn't designed for. ITF Lag hill, nukes freezing the screen, missing/black textures etc, a gfx overhaul is long overdue imho and I'll stick to that!

Oh without a doubt a GFX over hall would be a massive inprovment butt to bring it up to the point Razor wants seem to me to be asking to much.

But if they were going to do a upgrade they should do it right and add better models with higher polygon counts and what not and these are going to up the requirements of the game and while yes they could do the eve thing and have to clients did eve not eventually abandon there low end client as it was to much work to maintain both?

Posted

well, you could just have a scalable system for the models and textures, no point having two clients.

Quite true. This is what is expected with the graphical update of Anarchy Online, to take a different example of an even older engine.

The old AO engine does not take advantage of GPU processing at all, as I understand it. There has been much progression in gfx libaries, drivers and graphics card capabilities - but engines need to be written to use them also.

I have one of these. CoX doesn't work correctly with it. Can't have FSAA, Depth of Field Effects, Bloom Effects, Bloom Amount and Desaturation Effects turned on or it becomes an image flickering seizure inducing nightmare. Also, PhysX effects aren't available.

So pick another example of GfX card... as others have said, this isn't the card for MMOs.

Fix your drivers, or maybe it's a hardware incompatability. Known issues get fixed eventually anyways. The card is a monster, and is for all games, i'll get one next month and tell you how it goes
