Indeed. I think the heavy response in opposition to a graphical rehaul (or 'buff') will tell the devs that investing time and resources in such an endeavour would be an unpopular waste.

I think there will be some sort of graphics upgrade soon-ish though.

Other side.. it will draw in new subs. Gamers that are playing top mmo's and see City of Heroes as an 5-year old dinosaur.

What do you think someone will say when they just came off a beta of Aion... and want to try out COH because its also NCSOFT?!

Be realistic here. GFX = Looks, and looks is what sells the game up first. Before you have hit even one npc you will check out how youre toon and the environment looks.

We are loosing more subs because of never starting a subscription then we can ever loose if people with ancient pc's can't run this game anymore. Besides that... This game is rather addicting. I guess at least 25% of the people who cant run it anymore will willingly upgrade their pc to be able to run again.

We are all gamers... and no gamer ever really fussed about not wanting to upgrade for a game. He... I have friends who already upgraded in advance for Champions Online!

With all due respect... I'm fussing about not upgrading for a game. My swanky laptop - aged 16 months - is already too outdated to play CO with 2GB and a dualcore. And - what with it being a recession and all - people are having to make solid choices about even carrying on with a subbed game, let alone buying new PCs for them.

Twin-track approach like the old EvE seems best for me - if you want shiny new GFX, you can have 'em... if you want a lower-demand entry, you can have that too.

Now that is what the dev's have planned. Sliders to up the gfx but able to run at lower specs.

So precicly what was mentioned before.

A game like this has to evolve... not backtrack. It will loose subs to nicer new games fast then.

I can live with a graphics upgrade, hell I fully expect one with GR. I don't want or see a reason why the graphics should be taken to the next level to please a very small minority of the players who have the best PCs.

I'd much rather the devs work on something that is enjoyable to play and ignore the graphics than spend time on the graphics and ignore the game play. And yes I understand that both can be done at the same time. However the devs should be looking at what gives the greatest bang/buck and work accordingly.

TBH I doubt it will, even if they tack on Cyrsis level graphics it is still a five year old game. The increased subbage would be less than if it were a fully realised expansion without a massive graphics overhaul. The only way of doing it so that you increase the subs markedly would be to release a new game eg CoH2. At which point you have to ask did they increase the subs or just split them into those who can afford to run a PC to play CoH2 and those who either don't want to or can't afford the PC.

And just to point out, my PC is quite capable of playing games like Crysis, I'm not against the idea because I wouldn't benefit. I'm against the idea because I genuinely don't see it being the advantage to more than a very few people.

I would find it very unlikely that the Devs would do a graphical update in a way that would make the game unplayable for a huge number of players. But, so long as it didn't effect the way I play on my creaky old machine, I'd be all in favour of such an update. Even though I wouldn't directly benefit from it.

If it helped bring in new players, or even just retained some of the old ones in the face of the competition, it wouldn't be a waste of time and resources as far as I'm concerned. And as far as the people that would moan about it...everything that's ever been done in the game has had somebody moan about it. But the Devs keep giving us new stuff regardless

But a lot of people are bored with everything these days. Incl the game they obviously keep playing. I15 gives two TF's.. that is content especially made. But only will keep you busy for a max of 5 hours. Then its bored again.

New toons.. same boring powerrs
MA... still kill the same npc.. no wait.. use the same powerrs on diferent targets.. ehh..

What is it that bores you on this game? The updates are just goodies extra.

For me, I've been waiting for SOME gfx update pretty much since CoV gave us some minor updates. Those updates did refresh the game a lot imho, but any time I stand near the shop in Grandville I go nuts about the sad "shadows" that spin around when I change PoV.

While some people whine about the "badness" of a gfx update I definitely side with the "This game DESPERATELY need one" folks.

That been said: I'd give anything for more actual content as in new maps, mobs, story arcs and most of all Strike forces.

With the MA pretty much dead in the water again (although I got a new author badge today, wow) and me definitely dead tired of it, and folks still grinding it, sending out blinds when you're close to the building, content is King.

and let's face it: even with all the "Issues" this game still has VERY little story content compared to most MMOs. Not that you can really judge a game by it, but just take a look at the small impact on your poor hd. It's silly!

GFX update would be nice. So long as it doesnt raise the minimum level, only the maximum level.

I don't keep playing CoH. I just signed for a month recently to see if I have fun with CoH again.

And it didn't work out sadly. Just played a couple of hours so far.

The last issues didn't bring any content I'm interested in, so the game started to bore me. What bores people and what keeps them playing is everyones own taste and decision. It's simple as that.

The last issue I liked was I12.

Wrong. If you say that, then i can say 90% o the playerbase has already left because there is CURRENTLY a maximum setting that some of you people out there wo't be able to run.

The update i am suggesting won't raise the minimum requirements for gfx, just the maximum.

That way everyone can still enjoy the game. The people with £1.99 computers can still play with the bare minimum, and I can still play at the absolute max. Except that 'max' will be extended for my enjoyment.

When the last graphics update was with CoV people left because it broke their game. I don't know how many it was, but I do know two people who did, personally. So I know it did happen, maybe they were the only two.

I don't think a graphics update is needed, certainly not a major overhaul to appeal to the far fewer people who have amazing machines.

WoW worse graphics more players - Obviously the graphics aren't what people play it for.

CO worse graphics newer game - Cryptic plan on releasing a game that looks ten years old as far as i can tell.

AoC great graphics, shame about the game - By all accounts it looks great yet the game is [censored] and the subs (last I heard) were in free fall.

Updated textrues would be good - like compare the people of Cimerora and the Rikti with the Outcasts.

Actually I rather see a complete zone overhaul of all old zones. Give us busses and taxi's... schools and children... etc.

I dont say 'graphics', but the succes (or fall) would be the combinatie of the 3 aspecs. Game mechanics, eyecandy and 'livery' of the game.

WoW has 'aged' graphics, but feel very alive, very rich. AoC was very eye candy, but the mechanics were plain [censored] and the 'livery' was way too static.

The combination of all makes it interesting, while the game mechanics of CoH are still 'good', the graphics 'poor to avarage', the livery however is very bad. End of the line it is a 'avarage', wich they can push up by getting the livery back to avarage. (more tree's, cars, people, more 'city feellike'.

(i dont know if 'livery' is even a word, if not.. hereby i created it).

Far fewer people yes, but that doesn't detract from the fact some people would want to enjoy graphics overhauls. I don't care if people leave the game because of a graphics update.

Why would your friends leave the game because of a graphics update? The minimum requirements will NOT change, and so they and their £1.99 computers can still run the game.

I'm thinking your friends were probably a little upset that people with good computers were going to benefit from a gfx update while they couldn't, and so they didn't want it to happen.

That's a rather selfish way of thinking, I think :P

No doubt that is the case for some people, but a GFX update really wouldn't hurt.

Your one cost less or more?

My comp is fine. Runs the likes of Crysis very nicely and at a decent playable framerate at 1920x1200, thankyouverymuch.

I just find the term annoying after seeing it used way too many times in this thread by one individual, and I don't doubt for a second there are quite a few players with low-end comps that can and are taking offence at it.

So seriously. Just stop. It's a low-end computer, not a £1.99 computer, and it sure as hell didn't cost anyone with low-end comps anywhere near that much either.

A graphics update would make the game more marketable to the average consumer, though.
