Damz is in a bad way, you see he really wants to create a new alt once issue 14 hits live (this thing i always do when a new issue hits), however earlier when damz was thinking what AT/powers to pick it was like eh?

Suddenly looking at powers and ATs is no longer the "oooo that cool and shiny!!!" factor, its the "hmmm could i make that uber? Would that be TOO squishy?" thingy! Stats are bad! Shields are so beautiful in their tech shields and fire state but why so weak but yet so strong? Maybe a willpower but then say no to customisation and the ooooo shiny!

Have any of you just happened to take the wrong turn once before and started looking at the stats when making a new character? If so . . . . . how you get out of it? Really really really want a brand new "hehe its damz!" character but not sure which!

I challenge you!
A live of the land toon that would only do ma missions 1-50
1-10 heroic and scaling upwards every 10 levels.
No outside transfers or gifts, the toon must finance itself entirely from ma rewards and the market.

I always takes an oooh that looks shiny lets try it out. Then trying it out it becomes, argh will this ever get better once I get stamina to nope it does not. Lets try something else.

[/ QUOTE ]Been there, doing that, except it's non-MA missions (obviously). My lvl 41 DB/SR scrapper is completely self sufficient, without any kind of purchasing at all or gift receiving ... my vault reserve and WW slots are always filled. Probably lost loads of inf from deleting things.... but it's certainly a challenge. You wouldn't want to see my build (as it is riddled with all types of SOs and IOs).

[/ QUOTE ]DM/Shield Tank/Scrapper/Brute would be fun to play. Having tons of fun with my scrapper. Fastest toon I've levelled by a mile.

For a time i looked at stats but i found that toons i created based on stats alone werent fun they lacked soul.

Im not sure what changed but i came across a post on the US boards about how poor elec was as a stalker set (which it is it horrid) and i had read posts on how great claws was as a scrapper set but it lacked burst dammage to be good as a stalker set add in a half formed ghost in the machine background that was lurking in my head and cybergeist was born he's proved great fun to play up thrue the lvls (now 45) and he'll be my first non brute 50.

I hope that refered to /Elec on stalkers and not Elec Melee, as thats a very fun set for a stalker. Infact Elec/Nin stalker was fun from 1-50, so enjoyable I would do it again.

I think you're suffering from the reason I've tried as much as possible to avoid the stats thing.

I hope I've been reasonably successful... I still enjoy playing and even with 8 50s there's new stuff to try. Make a toon you've never tried... after 3 years I'm finally playing (and enjoying) a brute and a tank.

The "Oooh" factori for me can never be found on paper - it comes from finding what the toon plays like when everything's gone horribly wrong and the smelly brown had impacted with the rotating device.

Try something different and improbable... and forget about what others feel about it - it's your toon after all - and if you can, unlearn all you know about stats

I actually just pick sets I think 1) seem cool and 2) work well together*. After that I start thinking about how to make them as effective for the role I'm thinking as possible.

I believe every powerset combo can be made very effective through creative use of IOs and power pools, admittably some combinations easier than others, though. This is why I dont really pay attention to min/maxing when creating the toon. That phase comes when I've decided whether I'll keep going with the character or not and what I think it will be best at.

*Basically this means something like melee-centric characters (kinetics, scrappers, etc) won't get a set that has a lot of KB in it, or I wont combine two end heavy sets.

I don't think I've ever made a character based on what the stats and numbers looked like, for precisely that reason. You concentrate too much on how the character is likely to perform and you forget the one reason that we're all here. FUN!

Most of my characters have been "That sounds like a cool concept, what power sets would he be?" and gone from there.

Go back to that (or maybe even try that if you haven't already) and the magic will flow back. Every time I've taken a break from CoH, I've ended up coming back to it for precisely that reason; had an idea for a character and a compelling urge to try it out!

Yep. At least half my alts came about because I had a name pop into my head, and then fit the power-sets to it. Which means I've had some truly awful alts (or boring, like my Bots/FF), but I've also had some really fun ones.

I never liked maths very much at school, I'm sure as hell not dragging it into my games!

Stats? Wot's those? I play for fun, and that, as they say.. is that. Kinda why I'm enjoying my Sonics/defender, even though he has NO attacks at level 15, lol

Not quite true, you'll have at least 3.

Brawl, Your Tier 1 secondary and your Origin attack.

Choosing not to use any of them is a different matter however, and not necessarily all that uncommon among defenders.

(this has been a broadcast on behalf of the society for pointless pedantry.)
