GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

[/ QUOTE ]Didn't you get the memo? All the cool kids hate popular things, like WoW or medieval/fantasy themed settings. A reason is not always required, either. If you don't hate popular things and proudly proclaim this over the internet, you're uncool.
1) D&D ripped off a pseudo-medievil setting from Tolkain (although it's not really accurate to describe LotR as pseudomedievil as it had everything from 19th century to pre-Roman)
2) Warhammer ripped off D&D
3) Warcraft ripped off Warhammer
4) WoW became stupidly popular.
All this served to re-enforce the fantasy = peudomedievil cliche.
I really should do something about this signature.

Meh. Tbh, fair play to Blizzard. I liked Warcraft 3 and Starcraft was ace. SC 2 looks very nice. And they have a lot of money from their success. People obviously enjoy playing WoW, or they wouldnt have that many subscribers, and they can afford advertising and such. I may not like WoW, and I do despise some of the sorts that play it, but thats just me.
Some people need to work on their logic...
Wait. Im saying this on a forum. Oh the Irony

Yea, sure, but we're t3h 1337! Everyrthing what was done more than 2 times is CLICHE! Un-cool! Wait... Aren't superheroes cliche too? Well, nevermind.
Having said that I don't think fantasy/medieval/whatever zone is especially good idea. It was done before, it was done near-perfectly before, in all the media. So, unless that hypotetical zone would be something really outstanding, it poubably would be rather uninspiring.
Yes a fantasy (most often medieval zone) would probably not be a good thing. There are tons of more or less good fantasy mmorpg's out there. Not a good thing to try to compete with those when your own mmorpg got its own unique niche in the mmorpg market.
Nothing wrong with enlarging that niche but medieval fantasy should not be the first choice imo.
Meh, fair enough reasoning and I see the point. Good enough.
I just wish they'd give us more realistic armour! -rage- It looks horrible! Those helmets are nothing short of abominable, and don't get me going on the armour...
Still...one can only dream, eh? Because, apparently, Jay is god in his little realm, which means we're stuck with what we get. Joy.

Our one would have no elves, dwrafs or orcs
It'd be like Cimerora - a historical fantasy dominated by normal humans, with one or two mythical creatures and a little bit of magic.

What a lot of rot. It's got nothing to do with it being popular and therefore uncool. It's got to do with the fact that it's over used, over done and completely unoriginal. CoH's biggest strength (for me) is the fact that it DOESN'T follow that over used tired forumla that every MMO and its wife does, and I feel a medieval zone, would be a step in the direction of genericism and unoriginality that I am actively trying to avoid in CoH.

I think an elf-less, dwarfless, orc-less medieval setting might be quite original

Yes. I know, you've said that already. And I've already said that the setting of a fantasy game, namely wide open spaces, people living in huts with straw on the floor, riding around on horses and if they're posh having a bath once a year, is conceptually no different to a fantasy setting. If you take that environment and throw a bit of magic in, you get a fantasy setting.
I don't think it takes too much of a leap of imagination to see that the archetypical fantasy warrior (like Conan for example, or the characters from within LoTR) are stylised exagerated versions of the kinds of people portrayed on medieval battlefields. It's quite likely that the exploits of certain individuals that are described in stories by people that have fought along side them were hammed up to make a better story, to the point where these kinds of people attain a legendary, fantasy type status.

Or perhaps because the big epic battles we're all used to in the movies are the kind that take place on a medieval battlefield and produce the kind of myths and legends we see in our culture; Jason and the Argonaughts, 300, William Wallace, Lord of the Rings, King Arthur, yada yada yada, and so it's natural that players will want to emulate that kind of hero in a game.

It ticks your boxes. All of them at once, is almost a low fantasy setting.

Maybe fall back on the Dimension idea. Infernals dimension is meant to be Medieval. Why not a Medieval version of Paragon? Darker, grittier, the odd parasitic demon infestin the allys, etc. CoT would probably be trying to invade, alongside any other nasties they could think up.
My point is that, yes, it would need to be original. I see no reason why it couldnt be original and/or well done.
Mind you, a few of the recent oddsnends from the Devs aint made me particularly hopeful...and the lack of originality in missions also bugs me...so...-shrug-

I will stand by the Medieval parts as well. I really HATE the current 'medieval' armour we have ¬¬ Now thats carp...
