I think perhaps that a fantasy world is generally seen as existing within a medieval one. In other words, you could take a medieval setting, and would only need to add wizards, orcs and goblins for it to be seen as a fantasy setting.

Perhaps the former is close enough to the latter to make people feel nauseous when it is suggested?

[/ QUOTE ]

Fantasy; Magic very common, things like orcs, goblins, elementals, magic items by the bucket load, stupid looking and impractical yet +1squillion armours, done to death.

ACTUAL Medieval; peasants, lack of technology, realistic castles, realistic and practical armour, non-magical but very sharp swords, knights, the occasional wizard/witch, plenty of scope for Heroic activities and Villain exploitation.

People have WoW phobia, with some very valid reasons.
Medieval does NOT equal WoW/AoC, however, unless whoever implemented such a system was as unimaginative as a brick wall with the foresigh of a duck...

Well, I took the leap of assumption that when people want a medieval zone for CoX, that'd include swords and sorcery.

Would be kinda dull and pointless otherwise, unless they give the enemy faction of the zone Inexplicable Badass Normal Toughness like the Cimeroran Traitors have. If they don't, then our metas could probably defeat armies by sneezing in their general direction.

See, I really like the 'Freakshow territory' in Crey's Folly - yet it's usually flown over to get to EDEN, and there's nothing much to DO there.

It's a shame, becuase it's actually really well put together. Apart from missions and as I said, EDEN, there's very little reason to go very deep into Creys - imo.

Tech, I think you missed my point. In a fantasy world, people think of setting, or time where people are generally farmers, trade in copper, silver and gold "pieces" rather than an actual denominated currency, travel around on foot or horse and cart live in hovels, castles or the like.

In otherwords, medival setting + magic beasts and abilities = fantasy. Is that not fair to say?

Therefore you could make the medieval setting as gritty and "real" as you like, but as soon as you put heroic and for want of a better term "magic-like" abilities into the mix, I think you're walking very close to a fantasy style game. Certainly too close for my comfort.

Cimemora works, but only just, and in fact the only time I ever go there is for the ITF, and that's it (oh and to have a perve at the old stylee version of GW. Hawtness tbh)

I would love to see one of those giant titans in Cim to go on a rampage! Best to make one of them spawn after a successful ITF. Like one was already half powered powered up and now that its controllers are gone......

Crimerora: Colossus, not a giant mek-man but a giant greco-roman warrior made of bronze. Sits on a huge stone throne overlooking the sea until it is triggered and then goes on a rampage toward the town.

Crimerora: Hydra: 7 headed serpent (like a land lusca) that lives in a random cave in the hills. hunts at night and returns to its cave in the day so, yes it has an almost random route through the area and can only be intercepted at night.

Crimerora: Kraken: like the kraken from clash of the titans. surfaces in the harbour, wrecks a few ships and bogs off with a handful of munchy peasants every now and then.

Hollows: Dolmen ; a huge Igneous stone giant that climbs up out of the ground every so often (when the caverns trial is completed?) for a bit of stompy goodness

Hollows: Monolith: another lump of walking rock. there are four monoliths (granite, basalt, sand and lava) released when Dolmen reaches certain points of the map

Hollows: megalith: released by dolmen at a fifth point. Huge diamond giant.

Faultline: Crom: the earth serpent. disturbed by the digging works this huge serpent travels aorund the sunken areas of faultline looking for snacks.

Steel Canyon: Giant demon summoned by circle at the top of the mound near the perez gate. flies to several points on the map before disappearing into the lake near the boomtown entrance

just some ideas

ps. on the medieval vs fantasy: not all fantasy is medieval, yes, the most common is but there is also science fantasy and contemporary fantasy. we already have guys runnign around with swords and armour so you could say we alreayd have a WoW flavour happening (I wouldnt say that as I've played WoW and hated it and I quite like my BS/Shield scrapper ). Marvel 1602 was a decent super-medieval setting that showed that it can work. An example of contemporary fantasy would be Moonknight or perhaps even Spawn.

there are different levels of fantasy also, high fantasy - like WoW - with lots of non-human races, monsters and magic being commonplace and low fantasy which is much closer to reality. Personally I prefer low fantasy settings which is the best we could hope for considering we are playing super heroes after all so there's only so much realism you can expect.

Only problem i would have with a medieval setting, and which I have with crimerora, is when players are able to use powers etc that dont fit. Bots MM, assault weapons etc. but, once you get over that, i think it could be quite fun. TF would become Quests

I do agree however tha tif it came to a choice between low fantasy medieval and sci-fi in the form of a moonbase and space stations, I'd much prefer to see sci-fi.

unleash the leviathan

[/ QUOTE ]1) This would destroy Sharkhead Isle, villains would need a replacement zone.

2) It'd be too powerful. But hey, people are probably bored of the Hamidon, a new 50 man raid encounter would be a breath of fresh air.

Wierdly enough, that actually deatured in a dream I had once...
The whole of Arachnos rolled out to the Sharkhead beaches, and then Leviathan/mini leviathan did the old 'sea serpent surface than dive' thing. And Mako was reduced to a gibbering wreck

I think something like that'd be kinda cool, tbh.

Creys Folly is probably not frequently flown over to get to anywhere. It's a CoH cul-de-sac.

It used to be the way to get to the Rikti Crash Site but that ended when RCS became the Rikti War Zone (I'm guessing it was probably due to a problem with the CoH gate in a co-op zone). The Freak circus is near what used to be the door to RCS.

Eden is easily accessed from Founders' Falls - and leads to the Hive, but I can't recall Freaks being there (in any noticeable numbers at least).

Well, the zone is very pretty to look at - although I imagine a medieval zone would be a bit darker and grittier

Can so. I think, if they actually worked on it and took some time, it could be epic. Anything done half-a$$ed will suck, obviously, but theres no reason something thats planned out couldnt be great.
Besides, things like scabbards and w/e used as costume details could coincide with more costume details that would work in similar ways, like backpacks, back details, amongst others. Maybe even, heaven forbid, CoT style robes!

Yes - nice long dresses - they managed to duck out of it with tunics in Cimerora, but a medieval zone would demand them

Whilst I understand where you're coming from, that'd be a step too close to mages, fighters and generic overdone carp for my taste. More options = good. More unique, original options = better imo.

And as Jay is unable to make long dresses work, we wont get a medieval setting.

Personally I would like a more Victorian style better though. Because in there you can introduce steampunk which seems to fit the CoX universe more. It has been done before in games but less often then Medieval/Fantasy.

The Dark Ages wouldn't be the Dark Ages when some heroes come rampaging through.

And there's room for Roman, medieval steampunk, underwater, moonbase, jungle and other zones in this game
