How do you eat yours?

This is not a post talking about the pros and cons of eating a certain easter chocolate...

I have just had my 42 month veteran badge and during my enjoyable time of playing COX I have always wondered one thing....

How many different ways are there to play this game?

This may sound like a silly question but there seems to be so many different variations. For example the PVPer plays differently to the badgehunter who plays differently to the solo artist who certainly plays differently to the team player and they all play differently to the Power Leveller.

And so I would like you all to tell me how do you specifically like to play the game and get your heroes (and villiains) from level 1 to 50. Tell me warts and all. What are the advantages to playing the way you play? What are the drawbacks? Why do you like playing the way you play? Is it game over at level 50 or do you continue making the perfect build or the biggest badgehunter? I have no reason for asking this I am just really curious if there is one overall popular way of playing.

To get the ball rolling I will tell you my way. I personally try to progress from 1 to 50 by seeing as much game content as possible in the right order. What this means is that I set myself the goal of getting all the mission badges, all the storylines (major and minor) and all the tfs in each level. This means I solo a lot, especially at lower levels. I also badgehunt on the side and try to get those badges in order as well.

For example, at level 10 I know I have to get the Clockwork Captive, Vahzilok Pollutant Plot and Bonefire Plots as well as Julious the Kind Hearted Troll and the Heart of the Hollows Storylines. I also should be getting Spelunker and Kings Righteousness Badges and I should cumulate in the Cavern Trial and Positrons TF. Believe me that is a lot of work to do in five levels and requires soloing with a lot of ghosting. Once I finish Posi I know I can then go on to get the level 15 storylines and badge etc which, of course, will end with Synapse.

When I get to level 25 I retrace my steps via Ouroboros and work on getting those pesky time traveller badges. Everything (as much as possible) is done in the right logical order until I get to level 50.

This may seem time consuming, labourious and (in some cases) downright dull - and too be honest in certain cases you would be right but playing this way means that the ding at level 50 is still a big achievement for me and still worth celebrating. It also means that throughout the journey I have a better understanding of my hero as I have been using their powers and developing new tactics which (in theory at least) makes me a better player. I also rack up a massive amount of prestige for my SG.

But its a lonely life playing the game this way. But for the TFs there is no teaming. Many people who play in teams would think I'm mad. My SG certainly does!

So how I play isnt perfect. I wouldnt even recommend it for new players and powerlevellers would hate it but that doesnt make it wrong. Its just how I enjoy the game. I have got stuck in my ways so my first question still exists...

How do you eat yours? (or rather tell me how you play the game)

Life is one big practical joke that we as the human race have yet to see the punchline to. Once you work that out the rest is easy.

nowadays? Plain easy: newspaper missions.

I have a 42 and 45 vet account, i got sick and tired of traveling the entire paragon city for 1 freaking mission, digging through every little corner for the 'defeat all' or cant find a stupid glowy. The first bunch of missions of a contact you have to travel forth and back, specialy pre-travel this is a plain nightmare. Not to mention the choice of mobs, some are just plain annoying against my toons (malta with their 40sec stun..). Only later i do the older missions that give certain badges for the accolades, nothing more.

Newspaper is easy, you can pick out of 3, big chance its your kind of mob, your kind of mission, and always in your zone.

Good question. I guess wtihout getting into a huge "thing" the simple answer is:

Number of Players (across all servers, past and present) x Number of alts (existing & Deleted)

Everyday is a different thing. I go as my mood swings. I choose one of my many alts to play and keep an eye on my friendlist and channels I belong to. Sometimes I get invited to a party and I almost always accept. Because I find a party always a nice change of pace compared to the soloing I normaly do. Other times I hear that people try to do something like a TF a GM hunt or a farm hunt for badges. If I got the time and am in the mood I then log a correct toon for that event and join. I like to do storyarcs and hunt badges while I go. But I noticed that I don't care much about those on the blue side. I find the arcs on Red side so much better. Blue side arcs seem bland compared to them.

I solo. I go one on one with this game, it's like a duel, an epic battle between me and the code. I'll beat seven shades of fun out of this game. I'll hack its head off and bathe in the fountaining geyser of warm joy. I'll disembowel it and watch it try to hold in its own gameplay. There'll be severed merriment everywhere.

Except when Blue Rabbit is on though. I have to stop him faceplanting.

Due to the nature of work I can't do anything regular or planned really. I don't get attached to people on any given server as I might have a spell of months in a row of never being on at their times. So I play similar to the OP. It's just something to do and I do it with lots of characters cos if I fancy something I will make it, play it for a bit, then play something else, no rush to 50 whatsoever.

Previously I just played solo until a stray invite came my way.

However, since joining the Sals Badgehunters channel, i've discovered a love for TFs and SFs. Quick levelling, fun story, they're a blast!

I mostly roleplay these days, with a bit of missioning thrown in from time to time, and maybe the rare TF.

At the moment im in the process of levelling a new toon of mine (noob buster, lvl 41 fire/dark scrapper and its sooo fun!), as soon as it hits 50 though i'll be back to my usual standard of play . . . . . .

Setting up competitions in atlas and generally having random fun. Usually up for most things but the main factor is that it has to be random fun.

Oh and the teams have to be full of CARNAGE! (go go team carnage! ) Ask coin, he'll never want to join one of my carnage teams again

I play chars i enjoy, mostly looking to team and do task forces together with friends. Certain days of the week we get together to play certain chars, like Defender tuesdays, villain sundays etc

Hate soloing with a passion, but might do one mission or two while trying to find me a team.

Also, lots of time is spent in icon and making cossies

Sounds about right, except for the bit about BlueRabbit, who I've never met. (Which may or may not be a shame. I dunno, we've never met. )

I do (randomly) team either because I feel like it, or there's something that needs a team, or some friends invite me, or something, but I like soloing. I go at whatever pace I like. I live or die on my ability to play.

Then I roleplay, either face-to-face with other people's characters, or in SG chat (or not in game at all, but using the same characters, though that doesn't really count for purposes of this thread).

And sometimes I badge hunt, generally because I'm tired of levelling or think it's about time I finally got the basic Accolades on my level 50 Scrapper, or really would like to get Student for my, um, character who is a student, or whatever.

And sometimes I go to Atlas or Talos and spend hours running between the CH and the base portal (and the workbench in their) because I've decided my reserves are up to sorting out some IOs for the next set I want to install.

Oh dear... I rambled. How unlike me.

I spend most of my time levelling toons to 50 with my regular duo partner. We pick a pair of ATs that we think will make a good combination and then do lots of missions. We both enjoy tuning the builds to make the duo as powerful as possible.

When I'm not doing mishes, I work the market to pay for the shinies. I mostly craft and sell high turnover set items at level 50. I avoid items with a poor supply 'cos I don't want to force prices up.

I do TFs occasionally but not often. I find them a little dull as a full team can steam roller more or less anything without tactical thought. The total carnage is a laugh though!

Wouldn't it be quicker to use WW and the University in Steel Canyon? They're closer, and there's no loading screen.

I've played since beta, so I tend to farm the first 21 levels (as I've been through that content WAY TOO MUCH (And pre-stamina sucks)) and then play from there, teaming as much as possible. Solo'ing bores the hell outta me.

Since the introduction of merits I tend to head to all the story arc contacts saving all my rewards I earn till I hit 50 then it's a mass random roll day , gives me a bit more of an insentive to get to 50, although usually only have about 450 merits so normally takes all of 2 mins spend on rolls but still a fun and exciting 2 mins

Too many 50's to list here's a few you may know.
Slazenger, Area51, Area53, Area54, Erruption, Mind Plague, Thresher, Sheath, Broadside, Debt

I throw a dart at the screen to see which alt I'll play for a bit. Generally I go through bouts of playing 2 or 3 toons for a few weeks until I get bored of them and then move on (this weeks duo are a Claws/WP scrapper who is now level 24 and a level 12 DM/WP Brute, which is the scrappers fault).

Then generally I stick LFT on, make a shout out and either street hunt for a bit or do a mission or two while I wait for a PuG slot to show up, which never takes too long.
